Update from Ottawa U Dermatology Program
February 2015 Update from Ottawa U Dermatology Program Steven J. Glassman, MD Ottawa Program Director There have been some noteworthy publications from staff and residents over the past few months, particularly in the JAAD. These covered diverse subjects like pain management in dermatology, the efficacy of oral retinoids in lichen planopilaris and the impact of cosmetic camouflage in pediatric patients with visible skin lesions. Case reports included AGEP from hydroxyzine and benzocaine, extragenital bullous lichen sclerosus, reactive hemophagocytic syndrome in adult-onset Still disease, linear scleroderma, tamoxifen-associated drug eruptions and the differential diagnosis of a pink nodule with a blue globule on dermoscopy. Well done to all the hard workers: Drs. Pratt, Beecker, Ramien, Kanigsberg, Lipson, MacIsaac, Lacroix, Sauder, Gavigan, O’Toole, Spano and Worley. Please forgive any errors or omissions! The tweaked academic program has been functioning well, and I am particularly indebted to our enthusiastic teachers, Drs. Jackson, Prokopetz, Finkelstein, Beecker, Laberge, Lipson, Heughan, Purdy and Ramien, as well as the many other staff involved in resident education at various levels. A standardized basic science curriculum for the whole country is eagerly awaited and would avoid much unnecessary duplication. Dr. Jillian Macdonald is back from maternity leave and somehow managing to run a private office and a busy home, not to mention a Mohs clinic. We are delighted with her return. The generous support of our resident education fund by the pharmaceutical industry is to be lauded and has permitted our residents to attend local and international conferences, as well as the recruitment of guest speakers for the academic half day. Pharma has also provided wonderful new textbooks for our residents—thank you. Residents held a retreat at Gatineau Park consisting of a zipline course. Much fun was had by all the attendees and, fortunately, there were no injuries! The event fostered team spirit and was followed by lunch at Les Fougeres. Congratulations to Ashley O’Toole on her recent wedding and to Laura Pickett and Tim on the birth of Georgia, a sister to Owen. A successful clinical and scientific meeting focusing on mycosis fungoides was held in November; the guest speakers were Drs. Youn Kim and Alain Rook. This meeting generated a record attendance, both at the lecture session and the clinical viewing. Thanks to the “Gang of 5” for their hard work. Dr. Melanie Pratt arranged an outstanding symposium on complex systemic therapy in medical dermatology, which was held at The Westin on Nov. 29. Thanks, Mel. Plans for the new Dermatology Centre at the Parkdale Clinic at The Civic are moving forward; in preparation, the Mohs and Phototherapy Clinics on the fourth floor will be temporarily relocated to the Riverside campus to enable construction to begin. As well, the dermatology clinics at The General Campus will be moving to The Civic site next month. An exciting but frenetic time awaits us. Dr. Kobayashi will need all his steering and manoeuvring skills! I would like to thank the residents, faculty and administrative staff for their support and encouragement. In particular, I would like to pay tribute to our dedicated program administrator, Anne Grose. Clinical and Scientific Meeting, Nov 15, 2014. Drs.
