Update from Ottawa U Dermatology Program
Steven J. Glassman, MD
Program Director
It has been a busy few months, starting with Atlantic Derm in Philadelphia in April, attended by
most residents from Ottawa and several faculty. In addition to the excellent lectures and superb
case presentations, a highlight was the visit to the Barnes Foundation Gallery, with its unparalleled
collection of impressionist art.
We held our Spring Clinical and Scientific Meeting on May 8 and 9, featuring diseases of the hand.
Our guest clinician was Dr. Arturo Saavedra from Harvard, who enthralled us with his knowledge of
medical dermatology and dermatopathology. Of course June’s World Congress in Vancouver was
a fitting finale to this troika. This unbelievable gathering was attended by most senior residents and
at least 10 staff. The highlights for me were the global, collegial atmosphere, the incredible
organization, wonderful venue and city, and diverse academic presentations.
Alex Kuritzky, PGY-5, received a CDA-RFS Resident Teaching Award, a tribute to her generous
teamwork. Michele Ramien presented at the Global Celebration Forum on “Dermatologic Signs in
Children as a Clue to Immunologic Disorders.” The WCD was a proud moment for Canada and
Canadian dermatology.
On a personal note, it was special to reconnect with colleagues from South Africa; yes, I was a bit
homesick, but more than that I was excited to show off Vancouver and Canada to my friends.
Good news abounds in Ottawa, with our three final-year residents passing their Royal College
Exams. Well done to Julie Lacroix, Alex Kuritzky and Margaret Mioduszewski! Alex is heading to
Vancouver to rejoin her family; we will miss her sorely as she has been such a fantastic asset to
Ottawa. As well, we are sorry to see Margaret heading to California, but we wish her every success
in her new venture and look forward to following her career trajectory. Julie is thankfully staying in
Ottawa, and we are thrilled to continue working with her. Julie’s special talents are a marvelous
addition to dermatology in Ottawa and the surrounds.
The following staff members are expecting babies soon, and we wish them well: Jen Lipson,
Lauren Laberge, Shanna Spring and Jenn MacIsaac. Finally, we congratulate Ashley O’Toole on
winning the Montgomery Award for Resident Research for 2014/15. Ashley is a worthy recipient as
she has several projects on the go and looks set to embrace some more. Thanks to Dick Blais and
Valeant for their generous sponsorship.
