Canadian Hidradenities Suppurativa Foundation
February 2015 Canadian Hidradenities Suppurativa Foundation The Canadian Hidradenitis Suppurativa Foundation was formed in October 2014 by a group of dermatologists in order to meet several unmet needs for this group of patients. The foundation is supported in part by an educational grant from AbbVie Corporation. The average Canadian Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) patient will see five doctors over 17 visits spanning eight or more years before being diagnosed. HS is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease with very painful, smelly, deep-seated lesions (nodules or abscesses) and purulent drainage. It has been estimated to affect 1% of the global population however this represents only individuals with a recognized diagnosis. HS affects dermatology life quality index more than any other chronic dermatological disease. There is little clinical data supporting effective treatment and no Canadian treatment guidelines to guide optimal referral and management. Patients often suffer for years leaving them frustrated in addition to being helpless and ashamed. This organization will promote education, research and patient care in the field of Hidradenitis Suppurativa/Acne Inversa. Funds will be raised to support scientific meetings for the education of physicians, patients and laypersons in accordance with Canadian Law. The mission of CHSF is to improve the quality of care and daily life of Canadians living with Hidradenitis Suppurativa: To build knowledge of HS and associated health issues for patients and their circle of care to ensure that HS patients lead productive and healthy lives To create more opportunities for research to serve this unmet patient population To establish cross-specialty dialogue to improve HS patient outcomes and contribute to sustaining our health care system To collaborate with US, European, and other global HS foundations to leverage from each other The CHSF is hosting a HS scientific session at the WCD on June 8th from 1-5 pm with a panel of world HS experts organized by Dr. Afsaneh Alavi and Dr. Alain Brassard. We look forward to seeing you at the Vancouver meeting. Please contact [email protected] for membership information.
