Dalhousie Residents` Update - Canadian Dermatology Association
May 2014
Dalhousie Residents’ Update
Natalie Cunningham, MD
Before beginning our update, we wish to make special mention of the death of
Moncton dermatologist, Dr. Alain Bolduc on March 25, 2014. Our thoughts go
out to his family, friends and colleagues.

We are happy to welcome our new PGY1 resident, Ashley Sutherland, who
will be starting in our program this July. Ashley is from Pictou County, Nova
Scotia and is finishing medical school at Dalhousie.
We wish the best of luck to our very special PGY5, Angela Law, who will be finishing her time with
us here in Halifax. Angela is headed to Saskatoon and is opening a new dermatology clinic,
SkinSense Dermatology, with soon-to-be Toronto grad Nicole Hawkins. Angie, you are a leader,
mentor and close friend, things won't be the same here without you!
Angela and Natalie Cunningham (PGY2) enjoyed a lot of Jamón Ibérico and mild weather in
beautiful Madrid for the World Pediatric Society meeting in September 2013. Both presented
interesting Peds derm cases from Halifax.
Ariel Burns (PGY 4) and Natalie had poster presentations at the AAD in Denver this past March.
They attended excellent dermpath talks by "derm celebs" like Rapini. The mountains were a lovely
backdrop. They are both headed to CDA this year.
Our residents also attended other conferences such as the Psoriasis meeting in Chicago, Sask
Derm, Las Vegas Derm and last year’s Atlantic Dermatology Conference.
Angela and Natalie are headed to St. John's, Nfld. for the Atlantic Provinces Dermatology
Association (APDA) annual meeting May 30th and 31st. We look forward to lectures by guest
speaker, Dr. Neil Shear, in addition to ziplining and happy hour!
We’ve really enjoyed having Jonathan Lai, a Dermatopathology fellow, participating in our derm
clinics this year. He has been a solid addition to the team and has contributed greatly to teaching. I
think our biopsy results are coming back quicker too.
Special note should be made of this past year’s Christmas party. The residents prepared a little
musical treat for the staff and other attendees that was a remix of
the “Twelve days of Christmas” (“Twelve days of Learning
Dermatology”). We were far from a well-rehearsed professional
act but that seemed to add to the audience’s delight. We even
dragged the dermpath fellow, Jonathan, into the fun for his
baritone range. This was the first resident sing-along but not the
last. Another highlight was staff member Dr. Rob Tremaine’s
performance of Sinatra standards. Karaoke continued into the
wee hours.
A resident appreciation dinner was held at the end of March. This was a special night for staff to
thank residents for their contribution to service and education in our department. Most staff and
spouses were in attendance and we laughed all night. This was also a chance for our soon to be
PGY1 Ashley to meet us all informally since matching to our program.
We were all excited to share in the arrival of Oliver Green, our program director Dr. Peter Green’s
new son with wife Dr. Emily Shaw. This is number three for the family and an adorable addition to
the Dal Derm extended family.
Natalie is getting married on October 4, 2014 to her fiancée Dr. Sarah MacSwain. Their wedding will
take place near Brackley Beach on Prince Edward Island.
