Canadian Dermatology Foundation`s Dr. Frederik Kalz Bursary
June 2014 Canadian Dermatology Foundation’s Dr. Frederik Kalz Bursary Program – Recipient’s Report Name: Elaine Dupuis Location: University of Miami Dates: Feb. 10 – March 9, 2014 I recently had the opportunity to spend four weeks working with the University of Miami’s melanoma and pigmented lesions group in Miami, FL. Through the generous sponsorship of the Canadian Dermatology Foundation’s Dr. Frederik Kalz Bursary Program I gained a fantastic high-yield experience. Prior to my elective, as a PGY-2, dermoscopy and even my dermatoscope seemed a mystery at times. However, in working with experts in this field I developed the tools I needed to be able to effectively assess pigmented lesions. I learned how to use my dermatoscope more effectively, and I developed a strong foundation in the area of pattern analysis. Their dedicated clinics served as a platform for cementing my new knowledge and helped me gain confidence in the identification of atypical lesions. Additionally, I saw how technology could serve as a clinical aid. The University of Miami is one of the few programs with access to confocal microscopy. Witnessing how this technology bridges dermoscopy and histology to further assess if a lesion needed to be biopsied was impressive. Finally, the multi-disciplinary rounds supported my understanding of the management of melanoma across specialties. I completed my elective with the feeling that I had a gained a solid foundation of valuable knowledge and skills in for the detection and management of pigmented lesions. Thank you to the Canadian Dermatology Foundation and the Dr. Frederik Kalz bursary program for their sponsorship and making this fantastic experience possible.
