October 2014 Alberta News Catherine Zip, MD, FRCPC The snow has melted, and we have cleaned up many broken branches from our untimely September snow storm. True to Alberta weather tradition, we are now enjoying above average temperatures. As for news, a lot has happened in Dermatology in the past few months in Alberta. Congratulations to Dr. Loretta Fiorillo, who is the new director of the Dermatology residency program at the University of Alberta. She practices pediatric dermatology in Edmonton and for many years served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Alberta Society of Dermatologists. There is an ongoing search for a new divisional director in Edmonton, and a final decision is expected soon. Dr. Chuck Lortie has completed a Mohs fellowship and has opened his Mohs surgery practice. Drs. Gord Jung and Doug Wu completed their residencies at the University of Alberta in June. Dr. Jung is now practising in Vancouver and Dr. Wu is doing a cosmetic fellowship in San Diego. Congratulations as well to Dr. Mike Kalisiak, who is the 2014 recipient of the RCPSC Prix d’excellence Award. The award recognizes Fellows who have made significant contributions in providing outstanding patient care to their patients and the community in which they practice. His practice In Calgary is focused on skin cancer prevention and treatment. He is very actively involved in the Alberta Medical Association and has co-chaired an organization aiming to protect youth and adults from the damaging effects of tanning beds. Dr. John Arlette was rewarded the Continuing Medical Education Top teacher at the University of Calgary for 2013. At the recent CDA in Toronto, Dr. Regine Mydlarski received the CDA-RFS Clinical Teaching Award for Faculty and a PARA Clinical Teaching Award. Dr. Kayi Li, a dermatology resident in Calgary, was awarded the CPD Best Resident Poster Presentation Award. The residency program in Calgary is now in its fifth year and currently has 15 residents. Dr. Carly Kirshen has relocated from Ottawa to Calgary and has joined our group at the Dermatology Centre. Dr. Vim Prajapati has joined the Institute for Skin Advancement in northwest Calgary after completing a fellowship in pediatric dermatology at Harvard Medical School. Last but certainly not least, Dr. Rick Haber, Chief of the Section of Dermatology at the University of Calgary, has returned after a 6-month sabbatical in Australia. He spent his sabbatical working with Dr. Dedee Murrell, a dermatologist in Sydney who is a world expert in epidermolysis bullosa. He plans to set up a multidisciplinary EB clinic in Calgary.
