Een typerend gebouw in een beschermd natuurgebied. Hier een geschikte oranjerie bij bouwen, lijkt allesbehalve
eenvoudig. En toch is hier het haast onmogelijke waargemaakt en lijken alle elementen moeiteloos met elkaar te versmelten.
Un bâtiment typé dans une réserve naturelle protégée. Dans ce contexte, construire une orangerie au style adéquat paraît tout sauf évident.
Et pourtant le quasiment impossible est devenu réalité, et les différents éléments semblent véritablement se fondre les uns dans les autres.
A typical building in a protected area of natural beauty. Building an appropriate conservatory here seemed anything but straightforward.
Yet here the near-impossible has come true, and all the elements seem to blend together without difficulty.
Wie dit Henegouwse domein oprijdt, lijkt in een tijdmachine gestapt te zijn.
De woning vertoont nog altijd dezelfde kenmerken als meer dan honderd jaar
geleden, wanneer het gebouw oorspronkelijk gebouwd is. Een sierlijk vlaggetje
met opschrift ‘1902’ op het torengebouw verwijst nog naar het moment waarop
de eerste steen gelegd werd. Ook de verzorgde raampartijen en het weelderige
groen rondom doen iedereen wegdromen bij dit plaatje. De huidige eigenaars
vonden echter dat de beschikbare leefruimte te klein geworden was. Een
woonuitbreiding diende zich dus aan, zodat ze meer plaats zouden hebben om
met het hele gezin gezellig onderuit te zakken voor de open haard of televisie te
kijken.

“Dit project betekende een hele uitdaging voor ons, maar wel één die we
niet uit de weg gingen”, vertelt Geert Pouleyn. “De bestaande dakstructuur
en gevelstructuur waren immers niet de gemakkelijkste. De achtergevel
bijvoorbeeld bevatte erg veel schuine hoeken. Het was dus zeker geen
eenvoudige opgave om een woonoranjerie te realiseren en tegelijk het
typerende karakter van de woonst te bewaren. We hebben echter geen enkele
moeite gespaard om alle oude elementen in hun oorspronkelijke staat te
bewaren en op die manier een mooi geheel te creëren met de architectuur van
Lloyd Hamilton.”
Het resultaat van al die inspanningen is navenant. Hoewel de oranjerie
gloednieuw is, heeft die toch dezelfde tijdloze uitstraling als de rest van
het huis. Dat heeft onder meer te maken met het feit dat de dakstructuur
van de oranjerie even speels en interessant is als die van de hoofdwoning,
maar ook met de keuze voor ongelakt afrormosiahout. “We hebben samen
met de bewoners beslist om het afrormosia niet te lakken. Ten eerste is dit
niet nodig, want voor afrormosia is een milieuonvriendelijke behandeling
volstrekt overbodig. Ook voor buitentoepassingen. Bijkomend voordeel is
dat afrormosia snel egaal vergrijst, waardoor een nieuwe constructie er al erg
spoedig uitziet alsof die er al vele jaren geweest is. Op termijn bezorgt dit de
hele woning een heuse meerwaarde.” ■
En parcourant l’allée de ce domaine hennuyer, on se croirait embarqué dans
une machine à remonter le temps. La demeure affiche toujours le même visage
qu’il y a cent ans, au moment où elle a été construite. Un étendard décoratif
arborant l’inscription ‘1902’ rappelle encore du haut de la tour l’année où
la première pierre a été posée. Les grandes fenêtres richement travaillées et
l’abondante verdure entourant le domaine alimentent la rêverie que ce tableau
suscite. Les propriétaires actuels éprouvaient cependant un certain manque
d’espace. Une extension de la maison s’imposait donc, afin que la famille
puisse disposer de suffisamment de place pour profiter de la chaleur du feu
ouvert ou regarder la télévision tous ensemble.
« Ce projet représentait un sacré défi pour nous, mais un de ces défis auxquels
nous souscrivons volontiers », raconte Geert Pouleyn. « Les structures du
toit et des façades existants n’étaient en effet pas des plus simples. La façade
arrière, par exemple, comporte beaucoup d’angles. Ce n’était certainement
pas une tâche facile de concevoir une orangerie habitable qui préserverait en
même temps le caractère typique du bâtiment principal. Nous avons mis tous les
moyens en œuvre pour conserver les éléments anciens dans leur état d’origine et
créer de cette manière un bel ensemble avec l’architecture de Lloyd Hamilton. »

owners felt that the living space had grown too small. An extension was called for,
so that they would have more room to relax with the whole family by the open fire,
or watch television.
Le résultat de tous ces efforts est évidemment à l’avenant. Bien que l’orangerie
soit tout à fait récente, elle possède le même cachet intemporel que le reste de la
maison. Cela s’explique entre autres par la structure de la toiture de l’orangerie,
dont le caractère complexe et intéressant fait écho à celle de l’habitation principale,
mais aussi par l’utilisation d’afrormosia non vernis. « Nous avons décidé, en
concertation avec les habitants, de ne pas vernir l’afrormosia. D’abord parce
que ce n’est pas nécessaire, l’afrormosia se passe très bien de traitements nocifs
pour l’environnement. Même pour les applications extérieures. Et ensuite parce
que l’afrormosia se patine très vite et de manière égale, de sorte qu’en très peu de
temps, une nouvelle construction paraît exister depuis de nombreuses années. À
terme, cela apporte une réelle plus-value à l’ensemble de l’habitation. » ■
“This project set us a big challenge, but one that we welcomed,” says Geert
Pouleyn. “The existing roof and façade structures were not the easiest. The rear
façade, for example, consisted of several sharp angles. It was therefore certainly
no easy task to build a living conservatory and simultaneously retain the typical
character of the house. We spared no pains to retain all the original features in
their original state and thus to bring them together in an attractive whole with the
Lloyd Hamilton architecture.”
Driving through this Hainaut estate feels like stepping back in time. The house
has all the features it had more than a hundred years ago, when it was originally
built. A little decorative flag bearing the figure ‘1902’ on top of the tower refers
to the year when the first stone was laid. The well maintained windows and the
The result is in keeping with all these efforts. Although the conservatory is
brand new, it has the same timeless atmosphere as the rest of the house. Not least
because the roof structure of the conservatory is as interesting and playful as that
of the main building, but also because of the choice of unvarnished African teak.
“We took the decision not to varnish the African teak together with the owners.
Firstly, because it’s not necessary, because polluting treatments are superfluous on
African teak, even for outdoor applications. An additional benefit is that African
teak mellows very quickly, so that a new building very soon looks as if it has been
there for years. In time that will bring the whole house a real added value.” ■
