Winter has never seemed so captivating: open larch pine forests, snow-covered alpine pastures at rest,
traditional mountain architecture with the inevitable steep and impressive South face of Mont-Blanc in the
background. We have selected a mountain inn in the village of Morges, and the very nice rifugio Bonatti, two
quality base-camps to discover this Italian snowshoe paradise.
Thanks to their acute knowledge of local geography, our leaders will reveal secret and wild snowy trails.
With the assistance of a minivan all week long, the Compagnie des Guides offers the possibility to select and
access the best destination according to weather and snow conditions at the time.
The Route
Day 1 : The Ors alpine pastures

We meet at 8H30 in front of the Compagnie des Guides in Chamonix. We drive to Italy and Val d’Aosta where we
start our hike. We make our tracks through an open larch forest, commonly found in the deep valleys of the
Alps. Trees become sparse as we climb, and their twisted trunks are an evidence of the harshness of the
weather in the mountains. We finally arrive at the quiet and untouched Ors alpine pastures. As we make our
way to the mountain inn to settle for the night, Gran Paradiso treats us with a spectacular view.
Day 2 : Val d’Arpy

A favorite summer destination, the small Arpy Lake is very calm and peaceful in winter. Only mountain hares
and foxes left evidence of their presence in this sleeping arctic environment, where alpine newts and red frogs
mysteriously survive. If weather permits, and for those within the group who are interested, we can continue
our hike to Col de la Croix to get a closer view of the impressive Mont-Blanc South face.
Day 3 : Mont Court de Bard – Pointe Fétita

On the way up into the forest, we can get a glimpse of the surrounding peaks at times. From Col de Bard, the
route follows a superb shoulder ridgeline to Court de Bard peak (7 400 ft), leaving below us the Bertosan valley.
The view opens up on a panorama from Gran Paradiso to Mont-Blanc, an endless series of snowy peaks as far as
the eye can see…
Day 4 : Val Ferret - Refuge Bonatti

Today’s destination takes us to a different area in Italy: built in the late 90’s, Rifugio Bonatti is a sturdy and
comfortable hut, where visitors can experience the inevitable charm of Italian hospitality at its best. Facing the
impressive Grandes Jorasses South face, one cannot imagine a better place to build a mountain hut and
memorial to the great Italian alpinist Walter Bonatti. Night at the hut (6 640 ft).
Day 5 : Refuge Bonatti – Vallon de Malatra
 650ft  1 970ft
From the hut, the Vallon de Malatra is the perfect place to enjoy the peace of endless snowfields. According to
snow condition and our motivation, we'll adapt our route above the hut before hiking back down to the Italian
Val Ferret. We'll reach Planpincieux after following the left banks of Ferret River. Back to Chamonix around
5pm.
Guides and leaders may have to adapt program and hiking route to weather/terrain conditions and according to
group hiking skills.
More Information
Difficulty : No specific snowshoeing technique required. Hiking and/or snowshoeing experience recommended.
We carry our personal belongings on Day 4, when sleeping at Bonatti hut.
Guiding : Each mountain leader guides groups of 6 (min) to 8 people (max). The Compagnie des Guides de
Chamonix's guiding policy is one of the most restrictive in the mountain guiding industry.
Accommodation : 3 nights in a hotel (double room), 1 night in a cozy mountain hut with small dormitories and
hot showers.

2017 Winter Dates : From Monday to Friday. January 02nd to 06th – February 06th to 11th – February 27th to March
03rd.
Meeting place : 9H30 am at the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix (190, place de l'église, 74400 Chamonix).
2017 Winter Price : 650€ per person (groups starts at 6).

Documentation :
- ID or valid passport.
- Repatriation insurance (mandatory). Cancellation insurance is highly recommended.
We provide optional insurance contracts for repatriation and trip cancellation (see booking form).
Individual insurance cover for mountain activities is also recommended (i.e. Carte Neige) as a complementary
insurance.
