Towards the end of World War II, many information about advanced aeronautical technology were captured in Germany by the U. S. Forces. One
of them was an analysis of the studies carried out by Dr. Alexander
Lippisch on deltawinged aircraft. Based upon the information, the Douglas
firm developed the F4D Skyray, the only operational interceptor with delta
wings in the U. S. Navy. Starting the design in 1947, Douglas was awarded a contract lor the construction and testing of two prototypes in December 1948. The first prototype took off on its maiden flight in January 1951 .
The second prototype flew shortly thereafter, and the airframe set two
new world records, absolute speed record of 1,211km/h and 100km
closed course record of 1,171km/h, in October 1953. Having numerous
improvements and refinements, the lirst production F4D-1 made its
maiden flight in June 1954 and entered squadron service in April 1956.
The distinctive 50 degree sweptback wings with round tips were equipped
with leading edge slats and trailing edge elevons. A set of trimmers were
installed on the inboard trailing edges of the wings. The outer portions of
the wings could be folded upwards by oil pressure for carrier stowage.
Although the Skyray never saw any combat, it proved its high capability as
an interceptor with numerous world records and scramble actions in Taiwan in response to crises in late 1950's.
Gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurden in Deutschland viele Unterlagen i.iber fortschrittliche Luttfahrt-Technologie von den US-Streitkriiften
beschlagnahmt. Eine davon war eine Analyse iiber die Studien, welche
Dr. Alexander Lippisch rlber Flugzeuge mit Delta-Tragflechen durchgefiihrt hatte. Ausgehend von diesen Unterlagen entwickelte die Firma Douglas die F4D Skyray, der zum Einsatz kam. Nachdem man mit den Entwurfen 1 947 begonnen hatte, erhielt Douglas im Dezember 1 948 den Aut
trag fiir die Entwicklung und den Bau von zwei Prototypen. Der erste Prototyp startete im Januar 1951 zu seinem Jungfernflug. Der zweite Prototyp flog kurze Zeit spater, und mit dieser Flugzeugzelle wurden im Oktober
1953 zwei neue Weltrekorde aufgestellt, der absolute Geschwindigkeitsrekord mit 1.211km|h, und einer fiir den geschlossenen Rundkurs von
'l .1 71 km/h. Nachdem sie zahllosen Verbesserungen und Ver1 00km mit
leinerungen unterzogen worden war, startete die erste Serien-F4D-1 im
Juni 1954 zum Jungferntlug und wurde im April 1956 bei der Staftel in

bewies sie als Abfangjtiger hohe Oualiteten mit zahlrerchen Weltrekorden
und Einsatzen in Taiwan, anlARlich der Krise in den spaten 50erJahren.

PAINTING THE DOUGLAS F4D-1 SKYRAY
Beginning from Februayl955, aircraft ol the
U. S. Navy were painted light gull gray on the
upper surfaces and gloss white on the under
surfaces. This color scheme was adapted on
the Skyray basically, but many airframes had
"personalized" color variation in each unit.
Reler to the diagrams and box art when painting the aircraft and pilot figure. Detail painting
is called out during construction and should
be done at that time.

DECAL APPLICATION

1. Cut off decal lrom sheet.
2. Dip the decal in tepid water for about
10
sec. and place on a clean cloth.
3. Hold the backing sheet edge and slide decal onto the model.
4. Move decal into position by wetting decal
with finger.
5. Press decal gently down with a soft cloth until excess water and air bubbles are gone.
ANBRINGUNG DES ABZIEHBILDES
1. Abziehbild vom Blatt ausschneiden.
2. Das Abziehbild ungefahr 10 Sek. in lauwarmes Wasser tauchen, dann au, sauberen
Stoft legen.
3. Die Kante der Unterlage halten und das Abziehbild auf das Modell schieben.
4. Das Abziehbild an die richtige Stelle schieben und dabei mit dem Finger das Abziehbild
naBmachen.
5. Das Abziehbild mit weichem Stoff ganz andrficken, bis kein iiberfliissiges Wasser und
keine Luttblasen mehr vorhanden sind.
APPLICATION DES DECALCOMANIES
1. D6coupez la d6calcomanie de sa {euille.
2. Plongez la d6calcomanie dans de l'eau
tiede pendant 10 secondes environ et poser
sur un linge propre.
3. Retenez la feuille de protection par le c6t6
et glissez la d6calcomanie sur le moddle
r6duit.
4. Placezladacalcomanie ?r I'endroit voulu en
la mouillant avec un de vos doigts.
5. Pressez doucement la d6calcomanie avec
un tissu doux jusqu'd ce que l'eau en excds et
les bulles aient disparu.
