156 5th Ave
(between 22nd St & 21st St)
New York, NY 10010
Neighborhood: Flatiron
The space is moody, with industrial lighting and wood floors. There's room for digital elements like the
multi-screen "Innovation Wall" and columns showing off Nike's online programs NikeFuel and Nike+
One possible reason for the mood lighting: The store is all about using energy efficiently. Designers used
reclaimed building materials, including a wooden bleacher from a local college, and the brand is expecting
LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Menswear is stocked on the ground floor, while the women's collection lives on the lower level. Nike made
a point of hiring employees who are obsessed with running, so you can expect your salesperson to share
your passion (and/or shame you with those leg muscles—hey, whatever gets you motivated.)
Watch for:
•Touch screens near sneaker wall foster ordering and shopping
•Treadmills for teasting the shoes
•Digital screen that maps Nike ID.

Watch for:
An American flag consisting of red, white, and blue versions of the iconic sneaker salutes shoppers as
they enter Converse’s Soho store. Fans of the shoes’ familiar pared-down aesthetic can shop from an
inspired collection of graphic t-shirts, hoodies, jeans, sunglasses, and watches, all laid in out in a highceilinged space whose décor (cement floors, oversize black and white photos of James Dean and
basketball stadiums, a vintage scoreboard) references the brand’s lengthy associations with rock n’
roll and basketball. Boasting the largest collection of Converse shoes in the world, the store carries
sneakers in every color of the rainbow and stocks the iconic Chuck Taylor All Star and Jack Purcell
lines along with limited-edition footwear collaborations with artists and designers like Marimekko.
Those who can’t find what they’re looking for can visit the custom-design station at the back and
create personalized shoe and t-shirt designs, choosing details such as graphics, soles, and laces.

Custom Flip Flop
1000 3rd Avenue, NY
The two Havaianas window displays at Bloomingdales
One showcases a factory-like scene, while a touch screen in the other allows you to designer your
own flip-flops.
The interactive touch screen is simple to use and tells you step by step how to customize a pair of
Havaianas to fit your personal style. Once you've customized them to your liking and have submitted
the design, pick up your new kicks inside the Havaianas Bloomingdale's shop on the second floor.
This is the store's second interactive display this year, after the sunglasses windows from earlier this
spring. It's a cool idea, but so far, it doesn't seem to be garnering much attention from passersby. Even
the kind gentleman greeting customers at the Lexington entrance said no one had stopped to use the
display since it was set up yesterday, except for a few occasional grandmothers.

fin.
