The growing popularity among the public, which had already begun in 2005 with the family comedy “Mein Name ist Eugen” (Rascals On The Road), was transformed into a plebiscite in 2006. Five Swiss films exceeded the mark of 100'000 admissions and contributed to a substantial portion of Switzerland’s share in the market: almost 10%, an all-time record. One of these films was the multiple award-winning “Vitus”, which also established itself internationally on the forefront of Swiss film productions within a short time. In fact, the triumphs of the films were nowhere near being limited only to the “national” level, but went on to experience waves of success abroad: the Golden Leopard for “Das Fräulein” in Locarno gained considerable attention internationally as this year’s highlight in film. Until now Swiss (fiction) films have seldom met with such great interest internationally: be it at festivals, which had already been indicated with their presence in Berlin and thereafter in Cannes; or be it among foreign distribution companies, who obtained the rights to start the films in cinemas in their country. The latter case also marks a new, positive development. Thanks to the strong network and promotional efforts on the part of SWISS FILMS, the success, which naturally reflects first and foremost the quality of the films, was further stimulated and bolstered abroad. As a result, “Vitus” and “Die Herbstzeitlosen” (Late Bloomers) launched brilliant careers in Germany. Other films which had proved to be successful in Switzerland, such as “Mein Name ist Eugen” (Rascals On The Road) or “Das Fräulein”, were not as well received by German audiences. In this issue of SWISS FILMS Info, Reinhard Kleber (Filmecho/Filmwoche) sheds more light on the wealth of contrasts of today’s reality and the chances of having Swiss films distributed in our neighbouring country to the north. Fredi M. Murer, Director of “Vitus” in Los Angeles at the AFI International Film Series. Our thanks to the following associations and agencies for their support, both in making data available and in providing helpful advice: the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (SFSO) (Umberto Tedeschi), the Swiss Federal Office of Culture (FOC) – Succès cinema (Laurent Steiert), ProCinema (René Gerber), and of course the producers and distributors. For the most part, the increase in Switzerland, which comes very close to the significant mark of 10% of all admissions, corresponds with the increase in popularity of Swiss film productions. While American and European films maintained their high level of the market share (59% and 28%, respectively), films from other culture areas hardly had a chance. Compared to most countries in Europe, where the emergence of multiplex cinemas on the city outskirts has led to the extinction of cinemas in urban centers, there is — apart from eight such cinema complexes in Switzerland — an excellent network of venues, including studio cinemas, which focus on a diversity of offers and thus render the screening of the large number of new films (almost 400) possible. This success represents a quantum leap in the Helvetian landscape of cinemas for it was frequently the case in previous years that only one film managed to rank among the top twenty at the box office. Moreover, this year’s sensational 9.6% of the market share was based on a wide range of films, spanning a number of genres: the comedy in Swiss dialect “Die Herbstzeitlosen” (Late Bloomers), the docu-fiction film “Grounding” and the art-house films “Vitus”, “Jeune Homme” and “Das Fräulein”. The release of these films in the French-speaking region of Switzerland was successful as well. Such success notwithstanding, the results of francophone films such as “Mon frère se marie” (My Brother Is Getting Married) or “Comme des voleurs” (Stealth (East)) in cinemas have fallen short of expectations throughout all of Switzerland. However, apart from Erich Langjahr’s “Das Erbe der Bergler” (Alpine Saga) which has been seen by nearly 60'000 viewers since its release in cinemas, major success among the public has generally failed to materialize. Compared to previous years, only one other film attained the mark of 10'000 admissions: “Hippie Masala”, a report on India. Is this downward trend for documentary films related in any way to the current boom of fiction films, which have clearly managed to captivate the public’s interest? The tentative results for the first half of 2007 indicate a definite improvement for the rest of the year. This all the more because several films will not be released in Swiss cinemas until the second half of the year: the documentary film “Heimatklänge” (Echoes Of Home), which has gained a great deal of attention at international festivals, as well as the portrait films about the Senegalese musician Youssou N’Dour (“Retour à Gorée”) (Return To Gorée) and the founder of Migros Gottlieb Duttweiler (“Dutti der Riese”). The short genre is booming in Switzerland. Around 350 films were produced in 2006, one fourth of which were selected to be screened at one of the three most important film festivals for short films in Switzerland. Apart from this classic form of theatrical release, many films were screened at “short” and “shortest” events and competitions, whose number are on the rise. Beyond the core of short films produced by professional filmmakers, a profusion of short films produced by semi-professionals has established itself. There is a variety of platforms for releasing such works, particularly for films which run from 5 seconds to 1 minute, with possibilities ranging from competitions to mobile-phone content providers and specialized Internet sites. Two short films were screened together with a feature-length film in cinema programs in 2006: the winner of the Swiss Film Prize 2007 “Feierabend” (Closing Time) and Georges Schwizgebel’s most recent animation opus “Jeu” (Play). Together with films from the previous year, they have been seen by approximately 60'000 viewers. Short film programs, special programs, short film nights at open-air events are steadily gaining in popularity. In 2006 the fourth edition of the Short Film Night, organized by SWISS FILMS, toured 15 cities throughout Switzerland, amounting to a total of 15'000 admissions. Moreover, the “short film delights” in the Lunchkino and other programs attracted an additional 50'000 viewers. Kurzfilmprogramme, Spezialprogramme, Kurzfilmabende an Openairs kommen immer besser an. From left to right: Leonarde Nigro, Michael Neuenschwander, Susanne-Marie Wrage, Stina Werenfels 8 festivals With 124 film invitations, the number of Swiss fiction and documentary films screened at a minimum of one international film festival in 2006 remained at a comparatively high level. It is interesting to note, however that there was a considerable increase in the number of film festivals which screened Swiss films in their programs, rising from 130 in 2005 to 172 in 2006. Swiss films were represented at almost all of the A-category festivals in 2006: for example, in Berlin, Cannes, Locarno, Montreal and San Sebastian. For the first time, Swiss documentary films were also screened in the competition in Sundance, the mecca of American independent film productions. Without doubt, the highlight of the festivals in 2006 was the awarding of the Golden Leopard to “Das Fräulein” in Locarno. This fiction film – Andrea Staka’s first in this genre – was honoured with another major award in Sarajevo. The fact that “Banquise” (IceFloe) participated in the official competition and “Hunde” (Dogs) in the Cinéfondation competition in Cannes confirms the exceptional quality of Swiss animation films and short films on the scene. On a number of occasions, animation films were prominently represented, particularly at the Hiroshima Animation Film Festival, which devoted a portion of its program to a retrospective of Swiss productions with 90 films. “Le génie de la boîte de raviolis”, “Tarte aux pommes” and “Jeu” (Play) were the most successful animation films, also winning numerous awards. Innovative short films were also well received by the public: for example, the documentary film “Wir sind dir treu”, which was presented at 51 festivals. New, experimental narrative forms were also screened at important events: for instance, “Twist” or “Lauberhornrennen im Sommer” (Downhill Skiing In Summer), which was screened in Rotterdam, among others. * As of 1.05.2007, release can have taken place in 2005. Only Awards from 2006 and 2007. Source: SWISS FILMS 13 film sales abroad The year 2006 marks the first time in years that significant results were attained in the distribution of fiction films abroad. At the forefront was “Vitus”, screened in cinemas or broadcast on television in 48 countries and territories. While other films produced in 2006 also launched international careers – “Das Fräulein” (9 countries), “Die Herbstzeitlosen” (Late Bloomers) (4 countries) and “Jeune Homme” (7 countries) – films from the previous year, such as “Mein Name ist Eugen” (Rascals On The Road) or “Snow White”, were distributed in various countries as well. The success of Swiss documentary films on the international market, already measurable in previous years, remained consistently high. Among the front-runners of films produced in 2006 were the politically explosive films “La liste de Carla” (Carla's List) (17 countries), “The Short Life of José Antonio Gutierrez” (8 countries) and “A Crude Awakening The Oil Crash” (5 countries). At the beginning of 2007, SWISS FILMS – in collaboration with the Federal Office of Culture – introduced a project which provides direct support to foreign distribution companies for the start of Swiss films in cinemas. The performance of current Swiss films in German cinemas. With approximately 560'000 admissions, the military comedy “Achtung, fertig, Charlie!” (Ready, Steady, Charlie!) paved the way for a wave of box-office hits in Switzerland, rendering the year 2006 the strongest in years for the film industry. In the wake of its success, a number of Swiss-German film hits such as “Mein Name ist Eugen” (Rascals On The Road) with about 577'000 admissions, “Die Herbstzeitlosen” (Late Bloomers) (547'000) and “Vitus” (254'000), and even the teenage drama “Snow White” (86'000) managed to make a similar leap into the cinemas in Germany – albeit with moderate to average results. Of all films to experience a painful flop, it was “Mein Name ist Eugen” (Rascals On The Road), which is the most successful film of the New Swiss Cinema after the “eternal” record holder “Die Schweizermacher”. Much to the dismay of MFA Film Distribution, the film version of this bestseller only managed to attract about 3'000 viewers into German cinemas. “We expected about 150'000 admissions,” reports Christian Meinke, head of distribution. He suggested that the main reason for this fiasco was that the children’s literary classic by Klaus Schädelin is practically unknown in Germany: “Obviously, it only makes sense to run films for children in cinemas when there is a popular model.” In addition, the premises for starting Michael Steiner’s comedy at the end of December 2006 were “catastrophic” because there had been an overabundance of family-entertainment products in the autumn/winter season. Even the warm-hearted film version of the Janosch classic “Oh, wie schön ist Panama”, even though it was released by Warner Bros., clearly did not come up to expectations: 375'000 admissions. The Movienet distribution firm in Munich also had to be content with 34'462 admissions for “Achtung, fertig, Charlie!” (Ready, Steady, Charlie!) in the spring of 2005. “That was very disappointing, because we were using 132 prints,” explained Uwe Vogt, authorized distribution agent. This kind of humour just didn’t work in Germany. “Although people were laughing at the previews, and the leading actress Melanie Winiger also came across tremendously well, the film never managed to attract cinema-goers along a wide front.” Indeed, a small distribution firm does not have the same marketing means as a major distributor would have, which might have yielded entirely different results for such a subject. “Very disappointing results” were yielded by “Snow White”, explained Evelyne Koplonig, head of sales at Stardust distribution firm in Munich. “With twelve prints, one of which was a an original print, we barely managed 6'000 spectators.” Koplonig added that the film had relatively poor reviews in the German press and it wasn’t possible to finance a major marketing campaign. It was released at the beginning of May 2007, although that could not have been the reason. A film by a renowned director like Samir did not take off even in popular cinema programs. Presumably, the “luxury” issues of the youth living on Zurich’s “gold coast” were too far removed from the local teenage audiences. 18 At present, the best result was attained by Schwarzweiss Filmverleih in Bonn with just under 260'000 admissions for “Vitus”. “The results were outstanding, especially in smaller cities,” exclaimed Dieter Hertel, head of distribution. “Many cinemas even reran the film in their programs.” In the meantime, it is likely that “Vitus” has become the most successful Swiss film in German cinemas. In Hertel’s opinion, a significant contribution to positive performance results was the combined marketing on the part of the Entertainment Kombinat in Berlin: “The agency maintained contact with all the music schools and music education institutes for two months.” In addition, the film was intensively advertised in large and medium-sized cities with brochures and other information media. “We invested 100'000 Euros in advertising, our largest advertising budget until now,” summarized Hertel. The subsidy of 125'000 Euros could even be repaid to the North Rhine-Westphalia Film Foundation. Hertel cites that a further factor of success was the credible synchronized version in standard German, for which Bruno Ganz, Julika Jenkins and Urs Ucker voiced their own dialogues again. Nevertheless, the five prints of the original version with subtitles yielded disappointing results: “They only ran half as much as the synchronized versions.” Incidentally, “Vitus” started with 72 prints, making it one of the largest film starts until now for the distributor in Bonn. In Hertel’s opinion, releasing the film at Christmas 2006 was “a good choice” because “Vitus” met with no real competition apart from the surprising art-house hit “Babel”. The X-Verleih in Berlin is entirely pleased with the response to the dialect-comedy “Die Herbstzeitlosen” (Late Bloomers), which has attracted approximately 150'000 viewers since 29 March. “It exceeded all of our expectations,” said Martin Kochendörfer, head of distribution. “All 46 release prints are still in use, without an end in sight.” Initially, the film had a “very slow” start due to the clement weather conditions in spring, which came as no surprise considering the configuration of the target audience. But then the impact of positive wordof-mouth advertising and the PR campaign became noticeable, reported Kochendörfer. A film with a story about Swiss senior citizens who have a positive approach to life that draws a predominantly “elderly crowd” is bound to succeed to a large extent by “word of mouth". DIE HERBSTZEITLOSEN BY BETTINA OBERLI (opposite page) VITUS BY FREDI M. MURER According to the Kochendörfer, the decision to release all prints for “Die Herbstzeitlosen” (Late Bloomers) in the original version with German subtitles proved to be absolutely on the mark: “Translating dialogues from a dialect into standard German is often problematic because the films lose much of their charm in the process.” However, the difference between the north and south was striking, with noticeably more viewers in the south. Kochendörfer believes this had nothing to do with the subtitles, but rather the regional proximity to Switzerland. Due to this contrasting response, the distributor reallocated a portion of the prints – originally intended all over the country – to the south. Kochendörfer cites the fact that the film director, Bettina Oberli, and screenplay writer, Sabine Pochhammer, toured in the cinemas as another important contribution to the marketing of the film. Their euphoria at the local visits served to created an “excellent mood” at the screenings. “What’s more, we also supplied several cinemas with brand-name lingerie and other promotional gifts,” reported the head of distribution. Such PR activities are well received – even the topic of sexy undergarments was gladly taken up. Heidrun Podszus, distributor from Berlin, can look back on a particularly long cooperation with Switzerland. When her distribution company, Ventura, releases “Heimatklänge” (Echoes Of Home) on 11 October, it will already be her fourth documentary film by Stefan Schwietert. Schwietert’s film “A Tickle In The Heart” (released November 1996) attracted 34'600 viewers, “El Accordion del Diablo” (The Devil's Accordion) (March 2001) 30'100 viewers and “Accordion Tribe” (April 2005) 9'100 viewers. Given the enthusiastic reactions to the film at festivals in Berlin, Nyon and Munich, Podszus is starting with 30 prints of the new film, which she believes is “very suitable for the cinema because of its exhilarating scenes”. The three previous films ran with ten prints on average. Unlike “Accordion Tribe”, the fact that “Heimatklänge” (Echoes Of Home) was co-produced by a German firm (Zero One Film) again helped simplify the acquisition of the distribution subsidy. According to Podszus, “Without the German certificate of origin and therefore the promotional reference from the film subsidy institute, the 30 prints would have been inconceivable.” Reinhard Kleber Reinhard Kleber works as an independent film journalist in Bonn. Schwieterts Film «A Tickle In The Heart» (Start November 1996) verbuchte 34'600 Zuschauer, «El Acordeón del Diablo» (März 2001) 30'100 Zuschauer und «Accordion Tribe» (April 2005) 9'100 Zuschauer.
