Le Programme USAID WA-WASH a organisé du 4 au 5 mai 2015
un forum sur la résilience et l’adaptation des communautés
rurales face aux changements climatiques à Ouagadougou au
Burkina Faso. Lors de ce forum, plusieurs acteurs du secteur se
sont engagés à améliorer l’accès des populations à l’information
agro-météorologique.

STAKEHOLDERS COMMIT TO HELP RURAL COMMUNITIES
TO FACE THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE
On May 4 and 5, 2015, the USAID WA-WASH Program held a forum
on rural community resilience and adaptation to climate change in
Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. During this forum, several
stakeholders committed to improving people’s access to agrometeorological information.
La cérémonie d’ouverture du forum a été présidée par M. Jean
Noel Pooda, Ministre de la Recherche Scientifique et de
l’Innovation du Burkina Faso. Ce forum visait à partager les
expériences du programme USAID WA-WASH et celles d’autres
acteurs de développement, pour une meilleure capitalisation et un
passage à l’échelle des expériences réussies. Le forum a été suivi
par 110 personnes venues de diverses organisations.
The opening ceremony of this forum was chaired by Mr. Jean Noel
Pooda, Minister of Scientific Research and Innovation of Burkina
Faso. This forum aimed to share the USAID WA-WASH Program’s
experiences and the experiences of other development stakeholders
to improve the application and scaling-up of successful interventions.
The forum was attended by 110 people from various organizations.
L’une des expériences partagées lors de ce forum a été celle de
l’USAID WA-WASH et la Direction Générale de la Météorologie
(DGM) du Burkina Faso. Dans le cadre de ce partenariat, la DGM a
fourni une assistance technique pour la formation de 1.181
producteurs de dix communautés, dans trois régions, sur
l’utilisation de l’information agro-météorologique pour la
production agricole. L’USAID WA-WASH a aussi signé des contrats
avec des radios communautaires pour la diffusion de bulletins agro
météo produits par la DGM afin d’aider ces producteurs à
appliquer cette connaissances. Selon M. Ezéchiel Pouahoukiga,
coordonnateur du volet changements climatiques de l’USAID WAWASH: « Cette collaboration entre l’Etat burkinabè, le programme
USAID WA-WASH et les radios communautaires a permis aux
producteurs dans dix villages de réaliser des meilleurs rendements
malgré les dures réalités climatiques ».
One of the experiences discussed during this forum was collaboration
between USAID WA-WASH and the Burkina Faso General Directorate
of Meteorology (DGM, in French). Under this partnership, DGM
provided technical assistance to train 1,181 farmers in ten
communities, in three regions, on how to apply agro-meteorological
information to crop production. USAID WA-WASH contracted with
community radio stations to broadcast agro meteo bulletins
produced by DGM to help the farmers apply this knowledge.
According to Mr. Ezéchiel Pouahoukiga (USAID WA-WASH Climate
change coordinator, “This collaboration between the Burkinabe state,
the USAID WA-WASH Program and community radio stations allowed
farmers in ten communities to achieve bigger yields, even in the face
of climate change.”
La collaboration USAID WA-WASH / DGM a intéressé beaucoup
d’acteurs du secteur. Au terme du forum, les responsables des
radios communautaires ont reconnu la pertinence de cette
expérience qu’ils souhaitent poursuivre à l’avenir. Selon M.
Rasmané Zongo, responsable de radio «la Voix des Balé: « De nos
jours, l’information agrométéorologique est capitale pour les
producteurs. L’initiative de l’USAID WA-WASH leur a permis de
comprendre l’importance de prendre en compte les changements
climatiques dans leurs activités. Si la DGM nous donne
l’information, nous sommes prêts à la diffuser gratuitement».

The USAID WA-WASH / DGM collaboration attracted a lot of interest
from sector stakeholders. At the close of the forum, community radio
stations noted the importance of this week and said they would
pursue it in the future. According to Mr. Rasmané Zongo, head of
Voix des Balé radio station: “Nowadays, agro-meteorological
information is crucial for producers. The initiative of the USAID WAWASH Program has allowed them to understand the importance of
taking into account climate change in activities. If DGM gives us
information, we are ready to broadcast it for free. "
