Music and the training of young people mean a lot to me, and I am delighted to see them here at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel. My dearest
wish is that the level of excellence of the Music Chapel will help young talents to give their best and to create an international musical elite, beyond
borders and cultures.

Music Chapel Festival: Beethoven
Music Chapel Festival: Beethoven

We
wensen u een aangenaam festival!

Music Chapel Festival: Beethoven
After Chopin, Brahms, À la française and The Romantics, Flagey and the Music Chapel are once more joining forces for a new
edition of the Music Chapel Festival, this year devoted to the great German composer, Ludwig van Beethoven.
The festival has an ambitious program, presenting six orchestras over the course of six evenings and proposing among others
the entirety of Beethoven’s concertante work. In the spirit of the Chapel’s intergenerational approach, established talents
and rising stars will appear together on the stages of Studio 4 and Studio 1. The opening concert will feature Le Concert
Olympique conducted by Jan Caeyers, an expert on Beethoven, and the pianist Ashot Khachatourian, who together will perform the Piano Concerto No. 3. On 2 December Laurence Equilbey will conduct the Liège Royal Philharmonic in the famous
Triple Concerto and Choral Fantasy. There will be a small exception to the all-Beethoven program with composer Krzysztof
Penderecki, who has been invited to conduct some of his works performed by Sinfonia Varsovia as well as the Violin Concerto with young violinist Liya Petrova. Our loyal partner the Brussels Philharmonic, under the baton of Michel Tabachnik,
will conclude the festival on 6 December with the Emperor Concerto and Symphony No. 3.
With at least two concerts daily (four concerts on Wednesday 3, Friday 5 and Saturday 6), the program will allow listeners to
immerse themselves in Beethoven’s music. The audience will have the opportunity to (re)discover also some of his famous
symphonies, his chamber music (the Archduke Trio, the Ghost Trio, the two string quintets, etc.), a major choral work (the
Choral Fantasy), and his less familiar works for voice (among others, the Irish Songs). These works will be presented during a
public masterclass and a concert by the young singers of the enoa network, the European opera network of which the Music
Chapel is a member.
Young listeners aged between 6 and 12 can discover Beethoven and his Ghost Trio thanks to a workshop on “Beethoven
and Ghosts” organized by the Jeunesses Musicales, followed by a concert on Wednesday 3 December. Families in the broad
sense are invited to (re)discover the Equinox project during a concert on Saturday 6 December at 11 a.m. in Studio 4: a choir
of children from neighborhoods of Brussels accompanied by the young soloists in residence at the Music Chapel, under the
artistic direction and with the active participation of Maria João Pires. The program also features the famous Sonata No.
32 Op. 111. Film-goers can enjoy a program of films centered on Beethoven proposed by Cinematek at Studio 5. Enjoy the
festival!

Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège
Orchestras
Since 2011 the new Music Director Christian Arming brings both youth and experience to an orchestra dedicated to excellence,
exploration, and a spirit of openness towards all kinds of audiences. Founded in 1960, the OPRL (made up of 100 musicians) is now
recognised as “Belgium’s finest orchestra”. Under the leadership of its founder, Fernand Quinet, and of conductors such as Paul
Strauss, Pierre Bartholomée, Louis Langrée, and Pascal Rophé, the Orchestra has developed an identity that is unique in Europe - a
blend of the discipline of German orchestras and the “transparency” of the French tradition with an openness to new work and
to a vast range of repertoire. Well represented on disc (50 CDs over 50 years, 27 of those since 1999, widely acclaimed by the international press), the OPRL is also an ambassador abroad of Belgium’s French-speaking Community, touring regularly. The OPRL
currently gives more than 80 concerts a year, of which half take place in Liège. Since 2000 it also runs the Salle Philharmonique in
Liège, catering for baroque music, chamber music, and major piano and organ recitals, as well as non-classical genres of music.

Le Concert Olympique
Orchestras
in Wenen.
belangrijkste concertorganisatie in Parijs was.
When Le Concert Olympique was founded in 2010 as the brainchild of Beethoven expert and conductor Jan Caeyers, it has struck
a chord in the classical music world. Le Concert Olympique represents a unique contemporary experience of a timeless tradition,
as well as a relevant performance of the canon, specifically the absolute masterpieces by Beethoven and his contemporaries in
order is to bring authentic, relevant and referential performances. The orchestra has 2 residencies in Belgium, id est in deSingel in
Antwerp and in Flagey in Brussels. As from 2012, it has been invited to acclaimed concert halls such as the Vienna Musikverein, the
Concertgebouw Amsterdam and De Doelen in Rotterdam. The spirit is captured in the orchestra’s name, which evokes Le Concert
de la Société Olympique, the renowned Parisian concert organizer that commissioned six symphonies from Joseph Haydn in the
1780s. The musicians are dressed by famous clothes designer Anna Heylen. As from 2013 Le Concert Olympique is “Orchestra in
residence” at the Leuven University and supported by the Flemish Community. It is also structurally sponsored by Ackermans &
van Haaren, Elia, KBC and Telenet.

Sinfonia Varsovia
Orchestras
Founded in 1984, within the Poland Chamber Ochestra, under a project with Sir Yehudi Menuhin, the Sinfonia Varsovia was an immediate success. Established as a permanent orchestra soon thereafter, it has been invited to perform in the US, Canada, and the
leading centres and festivals in Europe, Latin America, Japan, South Korea and China. The members of the orchestra are selected
in auditions, which enable the Sinfonia Varsovia to pursue a demanding instructional project while remaining at the highest level.
It has performed with the most eminent conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Charles Dutoit, Hans Graf, Emmanuel Krivine,
Witold Lutosławski, Jerzy Maksymiuk, Krzysztof Penderecki, Michel Plasson, Mstislav Rostropovich, Bruno Weil and with equally
remarkable soloists, from Martha Argerich to Christian Zacharias, from José Cura to Grigorij Zhislin. It has recorded for a dozen international labels and has won, in particular, the Grand Prix du Disque, the Diapason d’ Or and the Fryderyk prize. Under the aegis
of Krzysztof Penderecki between 1997 and 2003, the orchestra is currently conducted by Janusz Marynowski. It is supported by the
S.I. Witkiewicz Arts Centre Studio of Warsaw.
Lille National Orchestra
Since its creation in 1976, thanks to the ambitious projects of its director Jean-Claude Casadesus, Orchestre National de Lille has
established itself as a leading French orchestra open to all audiences with a desire to “bring music wherever it may be received.”
Each year, the orchestra performs in its concert hall, le Nouveau Siècle in Lille, (completely renovated and inaugurated in January
2013) its region, in France and abroad. The Orchestra is currently preparing for its third tour in China (September 2014). True to
its mission the orchestra plays the “grand” symphonic repertoire, with an annual opera production, but also the music of our time
particularly by appointing guest composers (Yann Robin in the near future). In parallel, it innovates with events dedicated to new
audiences: “live cinema concerts”, “famillissimo” concerts, “Must du Classique” concerts, “flash” 12:30 and the “lille piano(s) festival”. In all aspects of its programming, the orchestra invites experienced international conductors and soloists as well as young talent to promote. The orchestra places their young audiences at the heart of its projects by developing a wide range of participatory
actions. Over the years, the critics and the public have hailed more than thirty recordings with numerous awards. Ressortie / Re-release

Orchestre de Chambre Nouvelle Europe
The Orchestre de Chambre Nouvelle Europe brings together young musicians from all around Europe who are living at the present
time in Paris, France, and who share common extremely high musical and technical skills, as most of them are also starting their
international careers as soloist and/or chamber players. One of the goals of the orchestra is to reunite the world of soloist with the
one of orchestra musicians, giving therefore regularly the opportunity for its members to both play as soloists with the orchestra
and also accompanying world-famous soloists. Created in 2002 by Nicolas Krauze, its principal musical director, the Orchestre de
Chambre Nouvelle Europe has performed over 300 concerts all over Europe in the best halls and festivals. Recently the orchestra
has seen major development opportunities, with two regular musical seasons in France, new international partnerships as well as
major tours in Europe and South America coming 2015 and 2016.

EQUINOX
CHILDREN’S CHOIRS
Equinox project is dedicated to the creation
and the development of children’s choirs under
the artistic direction of Maria João Pires.
It’s goal is simple: to share the artistic
excellence of the Queen Elisabeth Music
Chapel through the auspices of its teachers
and young musicians with members of
society that would not normally have access
to it, for example children from deprived
neighbourhoods.
The work is profound and continuous; it aims
to implant the practice of music in areas which
until now have been completely barren.
If we consider that music enhances our sense
of well-being, then surely we must wish to
make it accessible to all.

Choirs
The Octopus Choir is a versatile ensemble that assumes in turn the form of a chamber or a symphonic choir. Ever since it was
founded by its conductor Bart Van Reyn, Octopus has worked on the basis of projects and has managed to gain a privileged position
in Flanders in a short span of time. This ensemble is composed of enthusiastic amateur singers, students studying voice in conservatoires and professional singers. The ensemble’s repertoire extends from late baroque to the 21st century. Octopus has a particular
passion for and dedication to ancient music and the Romantic voice repertoire. In addition to concerts conducted by Bart Van Reyn
with his own orchestra and period instruments, the Chamber Choir has already worked together with such orchestras as the Brussels Philharmonic, de Filharmonie, Musica Viva Moscow, the Orchestra of the Vlaamse Opera and the baroque orchestra B’Rock
under the baton of such conductors as Yoel Levi, James MacMillan, Enrique Barrios, Sian Edwards, Alexandr Rudin, Richard Egarr,
Ottavio Dantone and Philippe Herreweghe. Several recordings have already been carried out for Klara Radio and Radio France. In
2012, the choir performed at the Cité de la Musique with a program of Debussy and Schumann, and debuted with the National
Orchestra of Belgium. In 2013 they will sing Bach’s Passion of Saint Matthew, Haydn’s Die Jahreszeiten and Schubert’s Mass in F.
Equinox
The Equinox project is devoted to creating and developing choirs for children in difficult situations under the artistic leadership of
Maria João Pires and with the support of the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel and its students. It is a substantive project for the long
haul geared to getting music to “take roots” in environments were conditions are not a priori propitious for it to grow: it is a matter
of sharing art and culture, but also equality. Such a process promotes solidarity, good fellowship, emulation distinct from competition, and the development of self-esteem. Developed by Maria João Pires, the work method is intended to bolster the child’s
capacities by promoting artistic expressing through music. The notion of listening enables children to develop a critical sense, an
analytical acumen and concentration. Since 2012, the Equinox project has been developed in Belgium, in schools, children houses
and one psychiatric hospital; in Burundi with the SOS Children Villages and in France with the collaboration of La Cité de la Musique.
An Equinox Choir will be soon opened in the Leuze-en-Hainaut’s prison and we are working on opening Equinox projects in India
and Middle-East.

Opéra-Comique. In 1971, he created the Orchestre National de Lille, which since has become a reference in France and abroad.
In recent years, he has led his orchestra everywhere in the world. At the same time, he has pursued an international career and
is regularly invited to conduct prestigious orchestra. His international presence is also reflected in the field of opera productions,
which he also directs. More than thirty of his recordings have been hailed by the critics and the public. This is also the case of his
two books, Le plus court chemin d’un coeur à un autre, published by Stock in 1997 and La partition d’une vie, published in 2012 by
Editions Ecriture. Composer in his debuts for cinema as well as theatre, he is an ardent defender of contemporary music that he

Michel Tabachnik, conductor
Conductors
Since 2008, Michel Tabachnik has played a decisive role as music director of the Brussels Philharmonic. With this orchestra he
devises creative programmes that combine the traditional repertoire with contemporary works, a clear testimony that there is no
gap between the music of yesteryear and today. Michel Tabachnik and his orchestra have for several seasons been reinforcing their
international reputation. Michel Tabachnik studied piano, composition and conducting in Geneva. His studies barely completed, he
came to the attention of several major conductors, who gave him valuable support. Very close to Stockhausen, Berio, Ligeti, Xenakis
and Messiaen, Tabachnik has conducted several world premieres. Michel Tabachnik is also a composer, and has received numerous
commissions, the most recent of which came from the Lyon Opera. His works have been recently played in the Netherlands, France,
Germany & Belgium. During Season 2014-15, his latest work “Le livre de Job” will premiere at Cité de la musique, Paris. Finally, he is
also the author of several books, including De la musique avant toute chose [On music above all things], a collection of reflections
on 20th century music and the novel L’Homme sauvage.

The conductor and musicologist Jan Caeyers lived, studied and worked in Vienna for many years. From 1993 to 1997 he was assistant to Claudio Abbado at the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, where he also had the opportunity to work alongside Bernard
Haitink and Pierre Boulez. Until 2003 Jan Caeyers was the director of the Beethoven Academy and performed in many of Europe’s
major concert venues. As a freelance conductor he has worked at the Opera in Stuttgart, and with orchestras in Berlin, Paris,
Madrid, Barcelona, Florence and Prague. Jan Caeyers wrote down his in-depth views on Beethoven in his substantial volume
which was published in Dutch in 2009 and translated into German entitled as Beethoven. Der einsame Revolutionär by C.H. Beck in
Munich in 2012. This superbly documented biography was given an enthusiastic reception and the original version is now already
in its seventh edition. It became a bestseller in Germany – the home of Beethoven research – and is now considered as the reference work on the famous composer. Writing this book was an essential transitional stage towards the development of the new

Hermès Quartet
Music Chapel & enoa soloists
Sincerity, finesse and sensitivity are the traits that probably best define the Hermès Quartet. Noticed by the Ravel and Ysaÿe quartets, the foursome developed and matured with Miguel da Silva, Eberhard Feltz and the Artemis Quartet. In 2009, one year after
graduating from the CNSM of Lyon, they won first prize at the Concours de Lyon, the audience award and the prize of the SACEM,
and first prize at the 2011 Geneva Competition. They are also laureates of the Académie Maurice Ravel and the Charles Oulmont
Foundation. In 2012 they took first prize at the New York Young Concert Artists. The Hermès Quartet has released a recording of
works by Haydn and Beethoven (2012) under the Nascor label (receiving the highest critical rating from Télérama), and in 2014 it
will be issuing a new recording of the complete Schumann quartets, under the Dolce Volta label. The ensemble has appeared in
Europe, America and Asia, and had the opportunity to perform beside Valentin Erben, Yo-Yo Ma, Marie-Josèphe Jude and Miguel
da Silva. Anthony Kondo plays a Moose and Moose cello, on loan from the El Pasito foundation. The Fonds Instrumental Français
has loaned a Carlo Tononi violin to Omer Bouchez and a David Tecchler violin to Elise Liu. Since 2012, the Hermès Quartet has been
studying at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium under the direction of the Artemis Quartet. The foursome is the recipient
of an InBev-Baillet Latour scholarship.

BODYS ISEK KINGELEZ - NIPPON TOWER, 1995, CARDBOARD, TAPE, GLUE, TRANSPARENT GEL, PLASTIC, LETTERING, COPPER, THREAD, 67 X 34 X 22 CM, UNIQUE | COURTESY OF AEROPLASTICS CONTEMPORARY, BRUSSELS

Selon quelques indus
