They were important sources of meat then. They can be fed many fruits, vegetables, grasses, grains and compressed feeds. The high ranked males of domestic guinea pigs purr frequently and usually quite loudly and long. This sound is part of the reproductive behavior and otherwise promotes social contacts. For giving birth the female looks for a quiet and protected place and other animals are quiet while she gives birth. Two hours later she mates again then returns to her offspring.
