– Michael Buthe “I would like to inspire as many people as possible to develop their own world of experience. Not as a dream world. People should simply live more consciously, and emotionality and spontaneity are key elements of this. What I want to achieve is for Deze Retrospectieve presenteert een selectie sleutelwerken van de Duitse kunstenaar Michael Buthe (1944-‘94). Tijdens Chambres d’Amis (1986), de spraakmakende stadstentoonstelling waarmee Jan Hoet internationaal doorbrak, was de locatie met werk van Buthe een van de meest gesmaakte. people to realise that each one of us can have their own personal mythology and can consciously pursue it.” -- Michael Buthe Cover: My Love to Etienne | 1969 | cloth over canvas stretcher | Kunstmuseum Luzern | © Pro Litteris, Zürich Vanuit internationaal perspectief waren Buthes deelnames aan legendarische tentoonstellingen zoals When Attitudes became Form (1969) en Documenta V (1972) belangrijk. De video When love is wrong, I don’t want to be right (1980) is gefilmd in één van Buthes environments. Die heilige Nacht der Jungfräulichkeit | 1992 | fourteen copper panels and one candelabra crowned with two golden ovoids | Kolumba, Cologne 18 FR 19 MICHAEL BUTHE RÉTROSPECTIVE Cette Rétrospective présente une sélection d’œuvres clés de l’artiste allemand Michael Buthe (1944-‘94). La vidéo When love is wrong, I don’t want to be right (1980) est filmée dans un des environnements de Buthe. Ohne Titel (detail) | 1987-88 | eight collages on paper | Michael Buthe Estate, Cologne 34 EN 35 MICHAEL BUTHE Textile works and drawings RETROSPECTIVE This Retrospective presents a selection of key works by the German artist Michael Buthe (1944-94). It covers his short but intensive career from the late 1960s to the early 1990s and comprises works in textiles, drawings, assemblage sculptures, paintings, photos, collages, diaries and a film. Two installations – Taufkapelle mit Papa und Mama (1984) and Die heilige Nacht der Jungfräulichkeit (1992) – act as focal points in the exhibition. Buthe has already had a sizeable exhibition in Ghent, in 1984. Called Inch Allah, it was on at the Museum of Contemporary Art, the predecessor of S.M.A.K. He created Taufkapelle mit Papa und Mama for that occasion and it remains an important work of the S.M.A.K. collection to this day. During Chambres d’Amis (1986), the controversial city-wide exhibition that signalled Jan Hoet’s international breakthrough, the venue with the work by Buthe was one of the most appreciated. From an international point of view, Buthe’s participation in such legendary exhibitions as When Attitudes became Form (1969) and Documenta V (1972) was important. These exhibitions were mounted by the renowned Swiss curator Harald Szeemann at a time when such concepts as ‘process’, ‘transience’, ‘immateriality’ and ‘attitude’ were important in the creation of and thinking on art. It was the period of Conceptual Art, Performance Art, Body Art, Land Art, site-specific art, Process Art and Arte Povera. At Documenta V, Szeemann gave the title ‘Individual Mythology’ to a part of the exhibition devoted to the subjective worlds of such artists as Christian Boltanski, Paul Thek and Hermann Nitsch. Work by Michael Buthe was also shown in this section. Buthe’s textile works from the 1960s and early 1970s arose out of German Informal Art and American Minimal Art. They were a reaction to the crisis in painting as a medium at that time. Buthe followed in the footsteps of Lucio Fontana, who, with his cut and perforated canvases, aimed to bring an end to the limitations of the flat surface and allow actual space into his work. Like Fontana, Buthe literally attacked his canvases with a knife. Sometimes he also tore them, then sewed them back together again. Despite the seemingly spontaneous and ferocious actions that gave rise to these works, their composition is controlled, elegant and balanced, as well as showing precision of form. Associations with notions such as ‘wound’, ‘healing’ and ‘creating openings to other dimensions’, which became more pronounced in Buthe’s later work, first germinated here. Like his textile works, Buthe’s early drawings also had a conceptual basis. But while the textile works focused on the basic elements of painting – canvas, paint, stretcher – the drawings analysed form and volumes. Sometimes they served as design sketches for sculptures. To a certain extent, the cool reduction seen in Minimal Art also reverberates in Buthe’s drawings. He drew taut, geometrical constructions and spaces. But he did combine them with looser strokes of paint and areas of colour. In this way he brought together geometric and expressionist abstraction – two opposites – in his images. The drawings gradually became more expressive, sensual and colourful. They also increasingly acquired the autonomy of pure drawing. Buthe continued to consider drawing particularly important until the end of his career. Traveller As from the early 1970s, Michael Buthe’s fascination with non-European 36 EN 37 cultures increased constantly. He regularly travelled to Morocco, the Middle East and Iran. In some places he stayed on to live and work there longer. A non-European aesthetic developed in Buthe’s work that was inspired by the clear light, the radiant colours and the way of life outside Europe. Yet his work did not degenerate into any sort of naïve exoticism. It offered a critical, imaginary and personal response to the disappearance of spirituality and myth in Western society. Buthe became fascinated by everyday things that bear traces of their history. He amassed things that stimulated him in a cabinet in his studio. They included newspaper cuttings, art history illustrations, rubbish from the street and travel souvenirs. This became a source for his collages and assemblage sculptures. Stephan von Wiese describes the cabinet felicitously as a ‘mythical-magical mixing machine that converted everyday life into art and was able to unite seeming opposites’. Weltkarte (ca. 1970) is illustrative of the openness with which Buthe handled diversity. This collage combines human figures from all continents, times and cultures. The figures are assembled in a globe of the world, a circle, a form with no hierarchy. Weltkarte presents Buthe’s image of a world not dominated by any political, geographical or other order of power. Differences merge with one another under a starry sky of golden dots that blur visual differences and thus tie everything together. Nomadic sculpture For the assemblage sculpture Boulli Afrikaa (started in 1972), Buthe took as his starting point a pair of shoes he had received as a gift from a Senegalese musician. The unusual thing is that he continued to work on and add to this sculpture for several years. Elvira Oasis (1972-77) Boulli Afrikaa | from 1972 | various materials | private collection | courtesy Alexander and Bonin, New York 38 EN 39 combines some widely differing materials. This was another sculpture that Buthe continued working on for a number of years. He first showed Elvira Oasis at Documenta V (1972) as part of the installation Hommage an die Sonne. At that time, it consisted only of wood and feathers. It was only in 1977 that Buthe reworked the object, adding textiles, and presented it as a work in its own right. Buthe wanted artworks to undergo constant change, like life itself. His nomadic view of sculpture did not allow for stagnation. So many of his sculptures turn up in different forms and contexts. They appeared alternately as artworks in their own right or as parts of an installation. Between 1971 and 1992, Buthe created a great many room-filling installations. After a time he usually dismantled them and sometimes recycled parts of them in new interiors and environments. In this way he took his works from one materialisation or ‘incarnation’ to another, sometimes with new or removed parts. This explains why, apart from Taufkapelle mit Papa und Mama (1984), the only other installation by Buthe to have survived is Die heilige Nacht der Jungfräulichkeit (1992). Taufkapelle mit Papa und Mama Taufkapelle mit Papa und Mama consists of two sculptures (Papa and Mama), a circular painting above a cube covered in wax, and expressively painted folding screens to which found objects are attached. A pool of gold paint lies in the cube, like baptismal water in a font. In your imagination you can receive baptism in gold, a symbol of life and light. The screens are somewhere between painting and sculpture and create a wave movement in the room. In this work, Buthe refers, among other things, to the octagonal baptismal chapel in Florence Cathedral, baroque architecture, Joseph Beuys’ use of wax and gold, Elvira Oasis | 1972-77 | quilt, wood, feathers, wax and paint | Michael Buthe Estate, Cologne 40 EN 41 and the universal symbolism of archetypal forms such as the cube and the circle. The crude, comical sculptures called Papa and Mama can be read as caricatures of such biblical parents as Adam and Eve and Joseph and Mary. Buthe created this installation for his solo exhibition Inch Allah (1984) at the former Museum of Contemporary Art that was housed in what is now the Museum of Fine Art in Ghent. The fragile materials and abundance of elements that make up the work, the complexity of the whole and the fact that it was originally created for another space all made its reinstallation a complex process. S.M.A.K. opted to present the installation on a plan of the room where the work was first shown. The slightly raised floor on which the installation is displayed shows the dimensions of that room. In this way, S.M.A.K. shows an aspect of the complexity that faces museums when re-installing site-specific installations of this size in a new location. In Taufkapelle, contrasts between materials and forms, ideas and ideals are not played off against one another but are set alongside each other as equals. This installation represents Buthe’s thoughts on the tenability of the way we divide everything around us into categories. He saw everything as an interwoven whole. As a traveller between cultures, he took an open, free, respectful and connective approach to diversity. In this sense, he can be called a pioneer of cross-cultural art. place or spiritual dimension. They attest to Buthe’s interest in religion, spirituality, rituals, shamanism and magic. He adopted symbolism from these areas of knowledge, but deliberately left open their possible meanings. He was not a serious, profound mythomaniac. He made use of elements from both Eastern and Western culture in an intuitive and sometimes even playful way. In such paintings as Der Engel und sein Schatten (1974), Buthe visualised the freedom he was seeking by means of silhouette figures. He depicted floating human figures, sometimes encircled by a radiant sun. By reducing the bodies to outlines, he deprives them of their individuality, but at the same time relieves them of their earthly weight. While the paintings with two silhouettes symbolise mutual contact, the works with a single silhouette – sometimes that of the artist himself – are more (self-) contemplative in nature. “The sun, that distant heavenly body full of the mysteries that surround it, contains the wisdom of a long-fulfilled life in which beauty, love and knowledge merge into one another. […] Like all images, for me, my sun is a utility object by which to see, to feel, to dream, to understand things.” This is how Buthe describes one of his core motifs. He brings together the whole world, the whole cosmos, in the circle of the sun, in bright colours, glittering sequins or radiant gold. Diaries Windows and doors, silhouettes and suns Buthe travelled because he experienced Europe as limiting. In his quest for freedom, he tried to create openings. In his work, windows and doors symbolise the outward gaze and visualise a transition to another physical The intimacy of Buthe’s diaries from the 1960s to the early 1980s contrasts with the universality of his suns. With exotic splendour, poetic power and exuberant content full of fantasy, they give an insight into personal memories. These diaries are like worldly private relics of his 42 EN 43 intense lust for life. Their aesthetic is reminiscent of that of Persian miniatures, the difference being that Buthe also incorporated ordinary, everyday materials into his diaries. But Buthe not only recycled found objects. He took an equally creative approach to language and literature. For example, for the bizarre title Lebolo ondata que miracle reschenetürre la bella schenerupolo of a 1970 drawing he made free use of a fantasy language that combines German and Italian. Among other things, he also incorporated existing legends and myths into his diaries, transforming them into his own fairytales and meandering stories. His book Der Vorfall mit dem Körbchen (1989-91) was inspired by the Bible story in which the baby Moses is found in a basket on the river. The distinction between image and writing also fades in Buthe’s drawings. Almost in the same way as shamans wrap up magical objects, Buthe closed some of his diaries by taping them up. In this way he is related to Marcel Broodthaers, one of the pivotal figures in the S.M.A.K. collection, who made several copies of his last volume of poems unreadable by setting them in plaster. In this work, Pense-Bête (1964), Broodthaers converted his poetic work into a plastic work and changed career from poet to artist. Buthe’s diaries also balance between word and image, and between book and sculpture. They are often described as ‘diary objects’. When love is wrong Just as Marcel Broodthaers set up his Musée d’Art Moderne (1968), Michael Buthe presents a critique of institutions by means of a personal imaginary museum. He spent several months converting his studio in Cologne into a living environment: the Musée du Echnaton (1976), an Freunde – Friends | 1972 | printed edition 1/200 | publisher: Dietmar Kirves | photos: Stephen di Matteo, Sigmar Polke and others 44 EN invocatory space intended for experience, experiment, self-discovery, transformation, catharsis and healing. One part of it was Paillettentuch (1970-71), which now lives on as a work in its own right. The Musée du Echnaton was one of the many well-used theatrical sets in which Buthe spent part of his life with friends in the aftermath of the sexual revolution of the 1960s. He made the space available for exhibitions and performances by other artists who, like him, belonged to the art scene of the Rhineland from that time. Buthe was particularly attracted by the work of Wilhelm von Gloeden (1856-1931). This German photographer lived in Taormina in Sicily for many years, where he photographed boys and men, usually in nude poses. Von Gloeden’s work, controversial because of its pornographic tendency, was very popular among such personalities as Oscar Wilde and Richard Strauss. Robert Mapplethorpe, well known among other things for his homo-erotic photos, had work by von Gloeden in his art collection. And just like Joseph Beuys and Andy Warhol, Michael Buthe also used photos by von Gloeden as a starting point for a series of works of his own, entitled Die Sonne von Taormina (1985), in which he expressed desires and exotic fantasies. The life of society functions as important artistic material in the artist’s overall approach. For example, in the printed edition Freunde / Friends (1972) he showed, in a dry form akin to that of Conceptual Art, sometimes carnivalesque portraits of enduring and momentary friends, including people he met on his journeys and important figures in the then art scene in the Rhineland. The video When love is wrong, I don’t want to be right (1980) was filmed in one of Buthe’s environments. The renowned German actor Udo Kier, one of Buthe’s closest friends, appears in it as a flamboyant transvestite. 45 To the tones of ethnic North-African music and Western post-punk, we see him among other things leafing through one of Buthe’s diaries while heavily made up. The film is a typical example of the constant fusion of Buthe’s life and work. Its title combines that of the song If loving you is wrong, I don’t want to be right (1972) by Luther Ingram and a line from a 1959 song in which Marilyn Monroe sings “When love goes wrong, nothing goes right”. In Buthe’s case we can interpret this as a rebellious plea for openness and tolerance for being different in general and homosexuality in particular. The late 1980s and early 1990s In Buthe’s collages and paintings from the late 1980s, many of the elements of his earlier works come together: the depth and vitality of the colours, the radical treatment of the materials, sensual boldness and formal precision, the symbolic power of found objects, the cheap shine of aluminium foil and gold paint, the romance of souvenirs, rich decorative patterns and the combination of items from various cultures in allconnecting images. Some of the collages from that period form triptychs, thus linking them with the religious triptychs of Western art history. They are often overpainted with a pattern of stars, which in Buthe’s work – just like the sun – are a powerful natural symbol that surpasses all cultures with its universal meaning. Buthe’s suns turn up again in the form of disks in assemblage sculptures with absurd, Dadaist features. In Le dernier secret de Fatima (1985), the figurative element has almost completely disappeared and Buthe once again touches upon the style of his earliest works from the 1960s, which combined the reduction seen in American Minimal Art with the loose brushwork of abstract expressionism. This work is based on Mary’s appearance to three children to whom she 46 EN entrusted three secrets in Portugal in 1917. One unusual series from this period is Das Totes Meer (1989). Following one of his last journeys, Buthe did a series of small paintings in his studio in Cologne. By his standards they were very minimalist. Their simplicity makes them seem meditative. Their colours are related to works Buthe did in Morocco. Die Heilige Nacht der Jungfräulichkeit It was for Jan Hoet’s Documenta IX that Buthe created his final large installation: Die heilige Nacht der Jungfräulichkeit (1992). The work refers to the Greek Orthodox basilica in the monastery of St Catherine on Mount Sinai. The decoration there includes ostrich eggs. Portrayals of saints ornamented with precious metals have been blackened over the centuries by smoke from the candles that illuminate Piero della Francesca’s Montefeltro Altarpiece (c. 1473). In this altarpiece, an egg-shaped pearl hovers above the Blessed Virgin’s head. The eggs in Buthe’s installation are also reminiscent of Constantin Brancusi’s eggshaped sculpture Le commencement du monde (1909). The fourteen copper plates in which outlines of human bodies are engraved can be linked to the fourteen Stations of the Cross and the fourteen Holy Helpers whose roots lie in 14th-century Rhineland, where this group of saints was probably first worshipped to protect against disease and death during a plague epidemic. The flickering candlelight makes the figures appear for an instant and then disappear again equally quickly. Of this work, Buthe said: “The starting point is man, man who flies in the reality of his wishes and curses, of his divine nature and of the exposure to his devilish impulses.” In Die heilige Nacht der Jungfräulichkeit, Buthe covers the whole span of life, from birth to death.
