Je verlicht me. Je geeft op me af. Je beledigt me. Et pourtant, tu me fais tomber, raide. Tu me fais tourner. Je cherche des coins secrets malgré moi. Tu m’éclaires. Tu me critiques. Tu m’insultes. 11 EN S U BJ E CT M AT T E R “Talk about dance, something that is poorly understood, sometimes not much liked at all or too much so… An intimate space, red, hot, small. And a vast stage and a solitary being faced with his quest and his detached thoughts. This first dance when she comes up to me, moves away from me, from the me that I am today. To this first dance that makes me talk about my childhood. That applauds me, caresses me and says to me: It’s not you! And yet, you make me fall, abruptly. You make me turn. I look for secret corners in spite of myself. You enlighten me. You criticise me. You insult me. And demand of me that I look for the light in me. I’ve examined myself so many times, I’ve changed my breath, my gait, my rhythm. What more do you want? I’ve looked far away while you are in me. Your demand for a first dance is lethal, almost macabre. I kill you and turn my back on you. I destroy you to be free faced with my memory. And at your death, loud sounds, strident sounds, the kind you get from an electric guitar, will flood the stage.” Taoufiq Izeddiou, January 2014, Marrakech Dance, music and contemporary poetry provide the material for the new work En alerte. The choreographic language uses poetry and language to assert and free itself. This time Taoufiq Izeddiou draws inspiration from contemporary Arabic poetry, in particular that of Mahmoud Darwish. The question of language, to which Darwish refers, is fundamentally important to all modern Arab poets. It gave rise to the long narrative poem Madih al-Zill al-‘Ali (In praise of the high shadow), which features a profound reflection on existential questions. En alerte allows itself to be carried by the universe of this original poem that was written during the siege of Beirut and was read out by the poet in Algiers in 1983. It is a poem that resonates at the heart of our world today. “How large the revolution. How narrow the journey. How grand the idea How small the state!” Mahmoud Darwish, 1983 Documentary poem, taken from Nous choisirons Sophocles et autres poèmes, translated from Arab to French by Elias Sanbar, Actes Sud, 2011 [translation] 12 EN BIO Taoufiq Izeddiou (b. 1975) is a choreographer, dancer, teacher and artistic director of Anania and the contemporary dance festival On Marche. Born in Marrakech, Taoufiq Izeddiou studied architecture and tried his hand at boxing and drama before turning to dance. It was in his home city that Taoufiq Izeddiou discovered his passion for dance after taking classical and jazz classes in the French Institute in Marrakech in the early 1990s. He discoverd contemporary dance in 1997, through encounters with great choreographers the likes of Mathilde Monnier, Georges Appaix and Bernardo Montet. From this training, his encounter with Bernardo Montet was to be crucial because it opened up the professional scene to him in 1999. In the years that followed, they shared their questions about origin and identity. Alongside his career as a professional dancer, notably at the Centre Chorégraphique National de Tours, Taoufiq Izeddiou created his first choreography in 2000. In 2003, following the success of the group piece Fina Kenti, he came up with the idea of creating the company Anania, the first contemporary dance company in Morocco. Keen to pass on knowledge and to train, he established the first contemporary dance course, Al Mokhtabar I, (Le Laboratoire) between 2003 and 2005, producing several dancers now in Anania, and Al Mokhtabar II, from 2012 to 2015. In 2007, he obtained a state diploma in contemporary dance in France. Since then, with one foot in Morocco and the other in the world, he has been creating work that explores the tensions between tradition. After Cœur sans corps, Clandestins CSC, Déserts désirs, Aataba and Aaléef, in 2013 he created Rev’ Illusion, his tenth creation that is currently on tour. Taoufiq Izeddiou’s choreographies have been performed in Africa, the Middle East, Europe, South America and North America in the most prestigious events and venues such as Danse Africa Danses, Montpellier Danse, Charleroi Danses, Rencontres Chorégraphiques internationales de Seine-St-Denis, CND de Paris, Tanzquartier in Vienna and TransAmériques in Canada. Maalem Stitou, whose real name is Abdellah Naitmaou, was born in 1986 in Marrakech and is of Berber origin from the Taliouine region of Morocco. He was introduced to Gnawa when he was six years old, notably by Maalem Brahim El Balkani, Hamid El kasri and his teacher Maalem El Mahjoub Khelmous. With the latter he learned to sing, dance and play all Gnawa instruments, including the guembri and the tbal. He also studied classical music at the Dar Bellarej Foundation in Marrakech. Mathieu Gaborit, aka aYaTo, was born in Tours, France in 1972. A highly experienced, self-taught musician, guitarist and composer, Ayato has been 13 EN an active member of the HAK collective/label from the outset. He has been invited to give sound performances at several cultural events, including Les Nuits Sonores (Les Subsistances, Lyon 2013), the contemporary art biennale in Lyon with the HAK collective, WALL at the Bullukian Foundation (2012). He has also shared the stage with Han Bennink and Terry Ex, Alexei Borisov and Olga Nosova and Aki Onda, and has participated in a creative residency with Albert Marcoeur (Drama HAK n°81) and another on the work of Valérie Novarina with the European translation workshop at the Théâtre d’Orléans. Since 2001, Ayato has been developing a special dialogue with images during performances at film events in Europe. Noureddine Amir is an inspired couturier and a creator of costumes for theatre and film. Rabat-born Noureddine Amir is an artist without borders who demands complete independence. Rejecting the conventional impact of the city-style caftan, he draws inspiration from the sources of the Saharan Morocco, sculpting, colouring and tattooing in a kind of monastic quest for perfection. Working with the Iranian visual artist Shirin Neshat, he specialised in the amazing adventure of art film, creating costumes with such clean lines that they seem to belong to a world of symbols. Rapture, shot in Essaouira, won first prize at the Venice Biennale and cemented his reputation. The director then took him then to New York where she was staging a play, The Language of the Birds. After a few months in New York’s artistic circles, he tired of it and dreamt of returning home. Back in Casablanca, he took part in the famous Caftan Show, but subverted it somewhat by presenting a garment of ancient simplicity, the haik, sculpted out of gold raffia. He then decided to move to Marrakech, closer to the sources of his inspiration and favourite materials: raffia, felt, “bzioui” – a fine woollen weave produced in very small quantities by a last community of women in a mountain village – skilled dyeing and henna tattoos. Today, he exhibits in museums, such as in Antwerp in 2003, and continues his collaboration with Shirin Neshat while organising his own fashion shows. The On Marche international contemporary dance festival in Marrakech was launched in 2005, filling cultural venues and public squares in Marrakech. It is a platform that is eagerly awaited by an ever-growing audience, keen to discover contemporary choreographic creation from here and elsewhere. Over the course of successive festivals, On Marche has become a leading event on the Moroccan and international choreographic scene, an initiative that has enabled contemporary dance to exist and attract an increasingly large and diverse audience. Also at the Kunstenfestivaldesarts Panaibra Gabriel Canda (Un)official Language Théâtre 140 15/05 – 20:30 16/05 – 15:00 17/05 – 20:30 18/05 – 20:30 Welcome to Caveland!
