Parent Information Night
Ms. Amanda McCann and Mr. Derrick Cameron traveled to Gravelbourg on Thursday, October 23. Ms. McCann is the English Additional Language Consultant and Mr. Cameron is the Curriculum
Consultant for Prairie South School Division. The focus of the evening session was the changes that have been made to the
maternelle, grade 1 and grade 2 French Immersion interdisciplinary
curriculum and Progress Report. The curriculum is no longer divided into individual and separate academic subjects. Rather, all academic and social learning is interrelated and linked through authentic contexts and inquiry to better reflect how students learn. This
approach
allows
for
an
emphasis
on
oral
language
development.
The reporting system has also been modified to make parents more aware of what their
children should know and be able to do by the end of each grade level.
Education Week Highlights
Tuesday Open House: Education Week kicked off with an Open House
on Tuesday, October 21. Students, families and community members in
attendance were given a map of pictorial clues which lead them on a
tour through of several GES rooms on first, second and third floors.
Participants had their names entered into a draw for a prize pack
sponsored by the GES School Community Council. Congratulations to
Brooklyn, Nolan, Connor and Melanie Hawkins, the winners of this year’s
prize pack.
All those in attendance were also invited to take part in a contest to see how well they know
the members of the GES family. Participants had to correctly associate the
staff member with their photo and fact. Many families correctly completed
the trivia contest. All correct entries were entered into a draw.
Congratulations to Harsheen K. She won a backpack full of school supplies.

Pre-Kindergarten
October enchanted us with marvellous weather and very pleasant temperatures! We were able to play outside every day, jump, roll, walk
on the fall leaves, pick up them, throw them! Our fall leaves, apples, pumpkins, ladybugs and butterflies themes were
a good fit with this nice weather!
We did a lot of new activities this month, based on oral communication, social courtesies,
recognizing the letters of the alphabet that are in each student’s first name, the use of
puppets to reinforce the language and the verbal communication.
Mrs Valerie Brennan (our speech therapist) and I began the EYE DA (Early Year EvaluationDirect Assessment) with some of the 4 year old students. We will continue to evaluate
students throughout October and into the beginning of November .

Maternelle
October is always such a fun and busy month. Here is the proof! We have learned songs about fall,
Thanks Giving and Halloween. We are working hard at counting up to 10 and backwards from 5 to 0.
We can ‘’subitize’’ (recognize a group of objects without counting them) up to 5. We continue to
discover the letters of the alphabet and their sounds. We were also busy discussing how to take care
of our bodies so we can continue to grow and stay healthy! We talked about eating healthy, sleeping
well, exercising, keeping germs away and staying safe!
We went for a Nature Walk to collect leaves for crafts, made vegetable soup for Thanksgiving and
last but not least, we are anxious for Halloween Activity Day when we will carve and decorate our own pumpkins and later play games!

Grade 1B
We have done various reading and writing activities in French around our themes of fall and Thanksgiving. We will be ending the month
with our Halloween theme. The students really enjoy singing “L’automne est arrive” (Fall has arrived) during our morning calendar routine.
We have been working hard on learning the letters of the alphabet and their sounds. With those we have been creating syllables and simple words. The students love to read the books in our classroom library and look for words they know.
In math, we have been working on the numbers up to 20 and we have started addition and subtraction up to 10.
Thank you in advance to the parents who are going to help us carve pumpkins on Wednesday. We are all looking forward to it!
Mme Bonneau Chevrier

Autumn has arrived and students continue to work hard. In math, Grade 4 has been working on addition of large numbers. Grade 5 students have just completed the addition and subtraction of large numbers. Students
have learned to slowly and carefully read math problems several times. Making a drawing to help us solve the problem is important when possible. The grade 5 science class is almost finished their unit on matter and students will
soon have a test on this. In French, all students are working on verbs. The grade 4 class is also reading and writing
French words with the “ou” sound. The grade 5 class is concentrating on reading and writing words with “gn” and
“ch”. Volleyball has been the sport we have been playing this month but we took advantage of any warm October
days to be outside playing soccer.

For example, if the recipe calls for 3 cans of beans: how many cans are needed if we triple the recipe?. What did we do to the recipe if
we need 12 cans of beans?
The grade 7 students have been comparing improper fractions, mixed fractions and decimal numbers. Which is bigger? 3 ½ ou 3, 21
Not sure? Ask a student in grade 7.

From the Library
Students have been coming in regularly with their classes to get new books every week. This past week and this week they get to
put their name in a draw as it is Library Week . There will be one student from every English and French grade win a book. Winners
will be announced at school. November is looking exciting too! I am busy making plans for the book fair which will run the week of
Nov.17-21. This is also the week of "student lead conferences". Please, put this on your calendar and come and shop for your children. Christmas will just be around the corner then and these do make wonderful stocking stuffers. Also, a
percentage of every book that is purchased will come back in the form of new books for our library. Have a
safe and happy Halloween and come and shop to support our library.

Remembrance Day Program -Thursday, November 6
Staff and students are preparing for the annual Remembrance Day Program. The program will include student and GES Chorus performances and the presentation of awards to the winners of the poster and poetry contests. All are invited to attend. We ask that
you be seated in the GHS gym by 10:50am for the 11am program on Thursday, November 6.
Microwave Usage in the K-grade 2 lunchroom
We only have 3 microwaves to heat up lunches in the Kindergarten to grade 2 lunchroom due to the number of electrical outlets available. If possible, please send your child with heated food in a thermos to cut down on the amount of children needing to use the microwave. Other ideas for lunches that don’t require heating are sandwiches, cheese and crackers, wraps or salads.
Hot Lunch Order Form Deadlines
Thank you to our SCC for preparing another wonderful hot lunch for us at GES!!! On every hot lunch order form a deadline is included
as to when we need the order form back at school. These deadlines are in place to facilitate the ordering of supplies and to enable the
SCC to know what they need to assemble for the hot lunch. This month 14 orders were came in AFTER the deadline, one on the day of
the hot lunch. We are aware that there are the odd times when either a student wasn’t here the day of the deadline or possibly missed
receiving the order form and we plan for one or two extra lunches. Please watch for deadlines for returning forms to the school. We
would like these days to run as smoothly as possible for all involved and do not want any student to go without a lunch. Thank you.

Sharing the road with School Buses
Transport Canada has reported that school bus travel is the safest mode of transportation to and from schools. It’s
important for everyone in our communities to help make sure our roads are the safest they can be. Motorists are required by law to stop for a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing.
When approaching a school bus, begin to slow down as soon as the flashing red stop lamps come on, so the bus driver
can see that you are going to stop. If you are behind the bus you may not pass once the flashing lights are activated. If
you are approaching the bus from the opposite direction and you are too close to stop, you may pass the bus if you do
so before the stop arm is extended. The single greatest threat to the safety of children who ride school buses is motorists who pass the bus when children are loading or unloading.
When approaching a bus that has its stop arm out and its flashing lights activated, as a driver:
• You must stop no closer than 5 m (15 ft.) from the front or back of the bus.
Julien, Owen, Olivia, Nicky, Shakira and Brady went on to the provincial finals in Regina.
 You must not advance your vehicle until the bus driver turns off the flashing red stop lamps and deactivates
the stop arm.
• Before moving, check to see that all children have safely crossed the roadway.
Red means stop! The penalty for passing a school bus with its alternating flashing
lights activated is a minimum fine of $335 and 4 demerit points.
Watch for school buses loading and unloading children, even if the lights aren’t
flashing.
