Marjorie BARRÈRE, is a Structures and Composites
design engineer apprentice from INNOVAMECH. She
has completed the first four weeks of foreign
placement while working for FEMTO engineering in
the Netherlands.

How did you find your work placement?
The company is part of my employer’s commercial network. They have the same kind of
activities in structural calculus. It is not a big company as they are around 20 people, but it is
bigger than mine.
Comment avez-vous trouvé votre entreprise d’accueil pour la PPI ?
L’entreprise où je vais, fait partie du réseau commercial de mon employeur. Ils
ont la même activité en calcul de structure. Ce n'est pas un grand groupe, ils
sont une vingtaine ; mais c'est plus que la mienne quand même.
Can you tell me more about the tasks given to you overthere?
The project I have been given is about a R&D project on a weldering ship fatigue. At first it
did not seem to be linked in any way to my French company’s activities but still managed to
use my skills. Working in the naval environment was very new to me, but it ended up being
very useful as my current company is now willing to develop its activities in that area.
During the first two weeks, I worked on the structural meshing according to their data base.
The following two weeks, while I was back to France for my sandwich courses, they were
able to validate the draft according to an outsource analysis. Therefore, when I come back I
will be able to assess the results and carry on the same project.
Quelles sont vos missions là-bas ?
J’ai été missionnée pour un projet de recherche et développement en fatigue
sur des soudures de bateau. À première vue, ça n’a pas de rapport avec
l’activité de mon entreprise, mais j'ai quand-même pu transférer les prérequis
que j'avais. Pour moi c’est la découverte du milieu maritime, que tend à
développer mon entreprise.
Pendant la 1ère quinzaine, j’ai travaillé sur le maillage de la structure en
fonction de leur base de données. Pendant les 15 jours où je suis revenue en
cours en France, ils ont normalement validé le pré-projet en sous-traitant
l’analyse. À mon retour, je pourrai étudier les résultats et poursuivre le même
projet malgré les périodes fractionnées.
What was the most surprising thing working there?
The management style in the Netherlands is completely different from the French one.
Although at INNOVAMECH, they adopted an Anglo-Saxon model. It’s more flexible in the
Netherlands, for example you are free to organise your working hours the way you want. It’s
a system based on trust, we work independently as long as the job is done properly
(milestones and targets must met).
The team is friendly, and most of them speak English fluently.
Qu’est-ce qui vous a le plus marqué au travail ?
Le mode de management est complètement différent du modèle français.
Même si chez INNOVAMECH on a adopté un modèle très anglo-saxon. Aux
Pays-Bas c’est plus libre, par exemple on peut aménager ses horaires. C’est un
système basé sur la confiance, on travaille en autonomie dans les limites du
travail bien fait (respect des jalons et obligations).
L’équipe est sympa, quasiment tout le monde parle relativement bien anglais.
And what about the everyday life?
For accommodation, as I am going there twice and each time for a short period, I’ve been
forced to use holiday rental and their rates. Just to give you an idea, 3 weeks there
correspond to 2 months of rent in France !
Despite Delft being a student city, all the information that I found on websites were in Dutch
only, so I couldn’t find any student accommodation. I used Airbnb and another youth hostel
websites.
Et la vie quotidienne ?
Comme j’y vais deux fois sur de courtes périodes, je suis obligée pour
l’hébergement de faire avec les locations touristiques et leurs tarifs. Pour vous
donner une idée, trois semaines là-bas, ça équivaut à deux mois de loyer en
France !
Delft est pourtant une ville étudiante, mais les informations que j’ai trouvées
sur internet sont en néerlandais, donc je n’ai pas pu trouver d’hébergement
universitaire. J’ai utilisé Airbnb et un site internet d’auberges de jeunesse.
Have you any advice for those who have to perform a work placement abroad?
It is important to start looking for a placement and get organised as early as possible, and
make sure we leave with an open mind.
Coming from Bordeaux, I was worried about the weather ; I thought I was going to Sweden
! But in the end, the great forecast and the smiley people made me think I was in Spain ! I
felt very welcomed by everyone, and for someone like me who does not like travelling, it
was rewarding.
Un conseil pour ceux qui doivent partir ?
Il faut s’y prendre assez tôt, et ne pas partir avec des a priori négatifs. Venant
de Bordeaux, j’étais inquiète pour la météo, je croyais partir en Suède ! Mais
entre la météo et les gens très souriants, j’ai plutôt l’impression d’être partie
en Espagne ! Les personnes ont été très accueillantes, et moi qui n’aime pas
voyager, j’ai trouvé ça très enrichissant.
