Decision-making tool for the Fruit and Vegetable sector
FRUITS & VEGETABLES / AGROTECHNOLOGIES Decision-making tool for the Fruit and Vegetable sector FLONUDEP Fostering of sectors focusing on sustainable development with the help of a decision-making tool covering 3 key factors in the fruit and vegetable market: environmental sustainability, nutritional quality and socioeconomic features. FLONUDEP Labelled project The fruit and vegetable sector, challenged by all-year-round production, nonlocal production and intensive cropping, has to take account of environmental, economic and social criteria, all of which are selling points. Project holder CIHEAM - IAMM Consumption of fruit and vegetables in France is considered inadequate by international standards. Three key factors could encourage it: (i) price, (ii) nutritional value and (iii) environmental arguments. Objectives Develop a decision-making tool for the Fruit and Vegetable sector to guide all those in the trade in efficient business organisation and identification of critical points and be used as a basis for discussion amongst trade stakeholders. To promise consumers the best combination of these factors, producers do not feel armed to favour one factor over another. Yet any decision to reorganise their system could have far-reaching consequences for the competitiveness of their businesses. The project intends to develop a decision-making tool to guide all those in the trade in efficient business organisation and identification of critical points and be used as a basis for discussion amongst trade stakeholders. The work programme plans to : >D evelop a decision-making tool based on simultaneous assessment of the sector along 3 lines (environment, nutritional quality and socioeconomic factors) enabling professionals to ascertain the critical points in the sector, assess their weaknesses and/or progress margin and measure how competitive the sector is. >A pply the lifecycle assessment (LCA) approach for the first time to all criteria from producer to consumer in the tomato sector, used here as generic.
