Diploma of Advanced Studies / REALisation
Luka Maurer, Researchs Workshop Wieki Somers & Chris Kabel / Photography Sandra Pointet Diploma of Advanced Studies / REALisation - Ceramic & Polymers REAL postgraduate studies CERCCO is the Centre for Experimentation and Realisation in Contemporary Ceramics of the Geneva University of Art and Design. It is opening a new postgraduate course “REALisation – Ceramics and Polymers” aimed at designers and artists wishing to complete their training and to acquire technical, technological and aesthetic skills in the field of ceramics and polymers. The approach to ceramics is not only that of a traditional material, an ancestral support, but also, and more particularly, from the point of view of the most innovative developments in this field. Participants in the REAL postgraduate course are invited to undertake an individual project in ceramics and/or polymers. During the REAL postgraduate programme, artists and designers create design objects and/or works of art in a way that enables them to remain as close as possible to their personal artistic philosophy whilst continuing to exploit the most innovative aspects of these materials. The problem of turning a project into a material reality is the central concern of the REAL postgraduate course. The aim of the training is to provide participants with all of the conditions necessary for the rapid realisation of their project to make it posssible to verify their physical reality at every stage. The possibility of such immediately-verifiable experimentation leads to the participants acquiring new skills, opening up wider perspectives for them within their professional environment. The workshop dynamics are based on the alternation of critique and practice. The experimental dimension and research into materials and their applications, more specifically in the fields of ceramics and polymers, represent the main components of this programme. The aim of CERCCO is the provision of technical and methodological means conducive to the resolution of questions inherent in the realisation of any project. This framework makes it possible to test the development of the research immediately and to find innovative solutions. A wide range of technical, artistic, methodological and communication skills is employed, facilitating the acquisition of the necessary expertise for the realisation of specific and pertinent projects. The teaching is organised into three modules, two workshops and four lectures : _ 1. PROJECT Aims : To be able to realize an individual project of a high plastic, material and aesthetic quality which demonstrates the processes of research, experimentation, application and contextualisation of the project. To be capable of foreseeing all of the operations required to pass from the project state to the concrete expression/realisation of a group of design objects or of a work of art. Methods : Acquisition of new knowledge and skills through “doing”, by thought in action. Through initiation into techniques and technologies linked to moulding and to surface finishing and through different series of empirical tests, to obtain a more global and diverse view of the perception of an object and of its materiality. The projects thus become “physical hypotheses”. By means of rapid prototyping, moulding, 3D printing followed by application, to reach a concrete understanding of the project with a view to its finalisation. Realisation and production of art works/objects. Innovative approaches to surface treatments based on ceramics and the contribution of new technologies such as : ceramic laser printing, image transfer, laser cutting, surface erosion by sanding etc., enable participants to acquire new means of expression. _ 2. PROCESS Aims : To be able to translate an idea into a concept, and then into a project. To be capable of organising and managing a design or artistic project as well as the representation of the processes involved and the knowledge acquired. To have a sound knowledge of the materials and their associated technical processes to permit innovation. To acquire technical skills enabling the analysis, planning and transposition of possible solutions and the translation of them into pertinent actions. To acquire knowledge of the materials through research and experimentation in order to understand their inherent properties and to exploit them within the project. To be capable of analysing the potential of the completed project with a view to repositioning within the professional environment. Methods : From experiment to object : ongoing analysis of the research process and of the application of results in line with the development of an innovative project. With the aid of general and specific technological training, participants gain awareness of the possibilities of specific realisations. This favours the elaboration of new strategies conducive to the conception and realisation of completely new projects. From idea to visualisation : using digital tools (CAD) or analogue ones (drawing), participants select the most appropriate means for the clear communication of their ideas, in order to turn an abstract idea into a concrete concept-project. From form to materials : to apply research. Participants are able to apply the results of their research directly to their project. From object to communication : questions and issues linked to the position of creators and to their projects within a specific context and beneficial for the promotion of their projects. _3. CONTEXT Aims : To understand, compare and translate aesthetic notions and art and material theories with relation to the research project. To know how to communicate and combine the ideas associated with the project. To be capable of repositioning themselves in the market and of promoting their work with a view to new opportunities. Methods : Participants select a group of theoretical courses and seminars from those on offer at the Geneva University of Art and Design and the University of Geneva (proposed for the most part by the postgraduate programme). These theoretical aspects are rediscussed during the teaching of the Project module enabling the transfer of theory into practice. _4. WORKSHOPS Students benefit from instruction given by international ceramists, designers and artists, invited on a regular basis to lead workshops and lectures. The aims and methods of the workshops are defined by the contributor. _Teaching structure : The teaching extends over two semesters, corresponding to 900 hours, of which 350 hours is taught and 550 hours is for individual work, organised freely over the academic year. The teaching of the Project and Process modules is on Monday and Tuesday mornings, the courses of the Context module being scheduled according to the timetable of the Geneva University of Art and Design. The modular offer comprises workshops, theoretical seminars, technical classes, lectures and supervised work with contributions by guest lecturers of international renown : developers, designers, artists, technicians, and theoreticians. Visits and meetings involving professionals in the world of art, material and process design also form part of the programme. The work spaces and infrastructure are available during the University’s opening times. _Teaching methods : Teaching is through introductions to techniques and technology and through discussions concerning the projects. It is enhanced by the participation of professionals within and external to the Geneva University of Art and Design. Methods vary according to the materials taught. A substantial amount of time is allocated for discussion of the practical and conceptual aspects of the projects. _Specific Equipment : CERCCO offers exceptional technological possibilities with, amongst others, workshops for ceramics, moulding and firing, as well as a rapid prototyping atelier, a printer equipped with the Ceramic-Laser-Copy-System, a 3D prototyping printer and a laser cutting machine. The i-converter prototyping workshop and its specialist staff provide considerable opportunities for participants in the course of their research and realisation. _Evaluation : Evaluations in the form of a jury are organised periodically : 1st semester “Research” : Presentation of research in the form of models and samples, of a written report – dossier as well as an oral presentation. Demonstration of the research and of its potential. The development of individual work as well as of its different applications represents the main aim of this initial evaluation. 2nd semester “Realisation” : Presentation of the completed project, accompanied by a thesis placing it within its aesthetic and technological context. _Teaching Staff The areas covered by the REAL postgraduate programme are represented by the knowledge and skills of the teaching staff : ceramics, contemporary art and design, from research to realisation, from ceramics to polymers, etc. They are active in ceramic sculpture, in research and design and in contemporary art.
