CONSTRUCTING A MARKET, PERFORMING THEORY The Historical Sociology of a Financial Derivatives Exchange Donald MacKenzie and Yuval Millo This analysis of the history of the Chicago Board Options Exchange explores the performativity of economics, a theme in economic sociology recently developed by Callon. Economics was crucial to the creation of financial derivatives exchanges: it helped remedy the drastic loss of legitimacy suffered by derivatives in the first half of the twentieth century. Option pricing theory – a “crown jewel” of neoclassical economics – succeeded empirically not because it discovered pre-existing price patterns but because markets changed in ways that made its assumptions more accurate, and because the theory was used in arbitrage. Performativity, however, has limits, and an emphasis on it needs to be combined with classic themes in economic sociology, such as Granovetterian embedding and the way in which exchanges can be cultures and moral communities in which problems of collective action can be solved. TOOLS OF THE TRADE The socio-technology of arbitrage in a Wall Street trading room Daniel Beunza and David Stark In this paper the authors analyse the organization of trading in the era of quantitative finance. To do so, they conduct an ethnography of arbitrage, the trading strategy that best exemplifies finance in the wake of the quantitative revolution. In contrast to value and momentum investing, they argue, arbitrage involves an art of association – the construction of equivalence (comparability) of properties across different assets. The peculiar valuation that takes place in arbitrage is based on an operation that makes something the measure of something else – associating securities to each other. The process of recognizing opportunities and the practices of making novel associations are shaped by the specific socio-spatial and socio-technical configurations of the trading room. Calculation is distributed across persons and instruments as the trading room organizes interaction among diverse principles of valuation. INHABITING TECHNOLOGY The global lifeform of financial markets Karin Knorr Cetina and Urs Bruegger This paper focuses on institutional currency transactions as a global lifeform that inhabits technology during waking hours, is distributed across the three major time zones, and is nonetheless centred in and on itself – the lifeform constituted by the respective markets and participants in them. The authors argue that distribution and centring are not at odds with each other in the lifeform of these markets; that notions of interactions and networks embracing all social domains give short shrift to the actual realization of the networks – as centred post-network spheres at odds with the idea of distantiated units or nodes connected only by business linkages and social relationships. The paper also submits that the notion of technology as an external artefact or infrastructure carrying information flows distracts from the world-constitutive role of a particular component of this technology, the screen, and appresentational work of traders and a secondary information supply economy that create this world. ON TICKS AND TAPES: FINANCIAL KNOWLEDGE, COMMUNICATIVE PRACTICES AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES IN 19TH CENTURY FINANCIAL MARKETS Alex Preda The present paper examines the role played by price-recording technologies and financial knowledge in the organization of financial marketplaces in the late 19th century. Contrary to the widely held belief that the technologization of the marketplace began with the advent of the computer, the paper shows Résumés/Abstracts 317 Cet article des Editions Lavoisier est disponible en acces libre et gratuit sur reseaux.revuesonline.com that this process began in the 1860s and continued uninterruptedly to our days. Two cases of market-tailored technologies are examined here, which were developed at about the same time on the Paris Bourse and the New York Stock Exchange: Castelli’s “pantelegraphe” and Calahan’s “stock ticker.” Starting from an analysis of the cognitive assumptions underlying their mode of functioning, the paper shows how the ticker triumphed while the pantelegraphe did not, in spite of some clear technical advantages. In the next step, the consequences of this triumph are highlighted: the cognitive frame and the organizational shape of the stock exchange were substantially changed. The data on which the author relies is provided by investors’ manuals, brochures, newspaper articles, reports, stockbrokers’ correspondence, and investors’ diaries. The conclusion argues that the operational principles of the ticker have been continued and developed by financial computer screens in our days. Il illustre ce propos avec trois brefs exemples : le modèle Black & Scholes d’évaluation d’options, l’essor des plate-formes électroniques dans les marchés financiers (les ECN), et la prolifération de shopbots (robots d’achat). 318 Réseaux n° 122 THE IMPLICATIONS OF THE RISE OF MODERN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE PHILOSOPHY OF MODERN ECONOMICS Philip Mirowski Cet article des Editions Lavoisier est disponible en acces libre et gratuit sur reseaux.revuesonline.com This paper reconsiders two theses commonplace in the literature on information technologies: (a) that there is something called a “New Information Economy” and (b) that this new economy does not require any substantial revision of orthodox neoclassical economic theory. With reference to the literature of the social studies of science, it argues that (contrary to present opinion) (a) is true but (b) is false. Three short examples are given of what is meant by this argument: Black-Scholes option pricing, the rise of ECNs, and the reaction to shopbots. ECONOMIC MARKETS AS COLLECTIVE CALCULATING DEVICES Cet article des Editions Lavoisier est disponible en acces libre et gratuit sur reseaux.revuesonline.com Michel Callon and Fabian Muniesa How to address empirically the calculative character of markets without dissolving it? In this paper the authors propose a theoretical framework that helps to deal with markets without debunking their calculative properties. In the first section they construct a broad definition of calculation, grounded on the field of STS (science and technology studies). In the following sections they confront this definition to three constituent elements of markets: economic goods, economic agents and economic exchanges. First they examine the question of the calculability of goods: in order to be calculated, goods must be calculable. They then introduce the notion of calculative distributed agencies to understand how these calculable goods are actually calculated. Thirdly, they consider the rules and material devices that organize the encounter between (and aggregation of) individual supplies and demands, i.e. the specific organizations that allow for a calculated exchange and a market output. Those three elements define concrete markets as collective organized devices that calculate compromises on the values of goods. In each, they encounter different versions of their broad definition of calculation that they illustrate with some examples, mainly from the fields of financial markets and mass retail. FROM SILENCE TO SCANDAL News media’s difficulty in taking up the asbestos issue Emmanuel Henry This article analyses some of the logics underlying the functioning of the media sphere that could explain why, within a few months, the asbestos issue switched from a misjudged problem and/or one seen as being of little interest, to a full-blown public health scandal. It highlights first the importance, in journalism, of professional routines of selection (what news is considered relevant) and construction (how to interest the public) of news; and second, the profound dependence of the field of news production on outside social groups that contribute to the definition of the problem as it appears publicly. Some of the characteristics of trajectories leading from marginal definition of a problem to take-up in the media are described. ALGERIAN NEWSPAPERS Overview of web sites of arabic- and french-language newspapers Gilles Kraemer French and Arabic Algerian dailies are some of the most dynamic actors on the Internet. By comparison, the country’s businesses and institutions are largely absent from the Web. Just under twenty newspaper web sites exist (out of a total of fifty dailies at the end of 2003), mostly in French. The first appeared in 1997. All offer an electronic version of the editorial content familiar to readers of the printed version, with a limited range of additional offers. Despite the absence of an on-line advertising market, a minority has adopted some of the new trends on web sites such as continuous news updated with special files and services, and interactivity. Existing on the web is a guarantee of modernity and the only way of reaching a cultured Algerian diaspora whose members, now in Europe, North America and Gulf countries, fled the violence of the “red decade” (1992-2002).
