KhaliféSchumacherTristano - Afrodiziak
Ein paar Stichworte: Präsenz, Humor, Klarheit. Vielleicht auch Lust, Neugier, Kommunikation. Eine Prise Eitelkeit,
natürlich, die braucht jeder Künstler, sonst würde er nicht gehört werden wollen. Darüber hinaus Vielfalt, Kontrast,
Reibung, musikalisch gesehen auch Spontaneität, Unmittelbarkeit. Die Klangwelt von Bachar Khalifé, Pascal
Schumacher und Francesco Tristano lässt viele Deutungsmuster zu. Sie ist so polyvalent, dass sie sehr unterschiedliche
Interpretationen ermöglicht, je nachdem, wer sie sich anhört. Wer Klassisches gewohnt ist, der wird viel Seriöses in ihr
entdecken, schließlich ist Francesco Tristano als klavierstilistisches Multitalent unter anderem für Bach-Interpretationen
bekannt. Jazzer fühlen sich durch die Improvisationen an ihrer Basis abgeholt, denn Pascal Schumacher ist ein Meister
im Umgang mit frei zu erforschenden Klangräumen. Bachar Khalifé wiederum steht für das akustische Moment der
Ferne, mit Wurzeln in der arabischen Musikkultur, aber auch in der rhythmisch bunten Soundwelt der französischen
Szene.
Eine wilde Mischung also und eine, deren Konsequenzen die Musiker selbst überraschte. Denn die Aufnahmen
entstanden, weil sie notwendig wurden. Ursprünglich nur eine Konzeptidee, wurden Khalifé, Schumacher und Tristano
häufig gefragt, wie man ihre nur als Konzerte existierenden Programme über die Einmaligkeit der Abende hinaus erleben
könne. Der Spielspaß verwandelte sich in eine Herausforderung, die Unmittelbarkeit der Musik im Studio festzuhalten.
Das Trio ließ sich Zeit vor den Mikrofonen, experimentierte und fand den Mittelweg zwischen bekannten Motiven und
spontanen Einfällen. Vieles wuchs aus dem Moment heraus, wurde zu Struktur und Gewissheit, indem die Musiker
intuitiv Grenzen setzten. Songs entstanden, wurden wieder relativiert oder unter anderen Klanggesichtspunkten
umgedeutet. Ein Prozess der Genese eines gemeinsamen Ausdrucks.
Und das macht es spannend. Khalifé, Schumacher und Tristano klingen ausgereift in ihrer musikalischen Aura fröhlicher
Gelassenheit und erwecken im selben Moment den Anschein, als würden sie gerade erst beginnen. Sie spielen mit den
Eindrücken melodischer, harmonischer, rhythmischer Gewissheit und verlassen zugleich ihr jeweils angestammt
sicheres Terrain, um einen Gruppenklang zu suchen, der drei Individuen gleichermaßen verkörpert. Ihre Musik ist
Sicherheit und Risiko in einem, ein System der Gegensätze, das seinen Nenner findet, ohne die Eigenheiten zu vergessen.
Das ist auch der Grund, warum darin jeder etwas anderes entdecken kann.

Quelques mots-clés: la présence, l’humour, la clarté. Peut-être aussi l’envie, la curiosité, la communication. Une pincée
de fierté, bien sûr, tout artiste en a besoin, sans quoi il n’aurait pas envie qu’on l’écoute. Et puis encore la diversité, le
contraste, la friction, et d’un point de vue musical, la spontanéité, l’immédiateté. L’univers sonore de Bachar Khalifé,
Pascal Schumacher et Francesco Tristano se prête à de multiples schémas d’interprétation. Il est polyvalent au point de
prendre un sens tout à fait différent selon la personne qui s’y plonge. L’habitué du classique y découvre bien des aspects
sérieux ; finalement, Francesco Tristano est un pianiste aux multiples talents, connu entre autres pour ses interprétations
de Bach. Les jazzmen, eux, sont entraînés dans cet univers par les improvisations qui le sous-tendent, car Pascal
Schumacher est un maître en matière de paysages sonores inexplorés. Bachar Khalife, quant à lui, représente le moment
acoustique de l’ailleurs, puisant ses racines dans la culture musicale arabe, mais aussi dans les rythmes chatoyants de la
scène française.
Un mélange éclectique donc, et dont les implications ont surpris les musiciens eux-mêmes. Car les enregistrements se
sont imposés d’eux-mêmes. Au début, seul existait un concept, puis on a demandé de plus en plus souvent à Khalife,
Schumacher et Tristano si on pouvait faire l’expérience de leurs programmes, jusque là disponibles uniquement sous la
forme de concerts, au-delà de ces soirées uniques. Le plaisir de jouer s’est alors transformé en défi : comment, en
studio, fixer l’immédiateté de la musique ? Une fois devant les micros, le trio a pris le temps d’expérimenter et a trouvé le
point d’équilibre entre motifs connus et idées spontanées. Beaucoup de choses sont apparues sur le coup de l’instant,
ont gagné en structure et en certitude, au fur et à mesure que l’intuition des musiciens leur permettait d’y apposer des
limites. Des morceaux sont nés avant d’être à nouveau relativisés ou réinterprétés à travers un changement de
perspective sonore. Un processus de genèse d’une expression commune.
Et c’est là tout l’intérêt de la chose. L’aura musicale de quiétude joyeuse de Khalife, Schumacher et Tristano est arrivée à
maturité et donne, simultanément, l’impression d’en être seulement à ses débuts. Ils jouent avec des impressions de
certitude mélodique, harmonique et rythmique et s’aventurent chacun en dehors de leur territoire habituel pour chercher
une sonorité de groupe qui incarne à proportions égales leurs trois individualités. Leur musique est à la fois synonyme de
sécurité et de risque, un système des contradictions où les musiciens trouvent un terrain d’entente sans oublier leur
singularité. C’est aussi pour cette raison que chacun peut y découvrir quelque chose d’autre.

A few key words are in order: presence, humor, clarity. Desire, curiosity, and communication would also be appropriate.
And, naturally, a pinch of vanity – artists need a taste, otherwise they wouldn’t have such a need to be heard. In addition,
add variety, contrast, some friction, spontaneity, and immediacy for good measure. Now we have a description of Bachar
Khalifé’s, Pascal Schumacher’s, and Francesco Tristano’s music. It is so multifaceted that it can be interpreted differently,
depending on who is listening. Those who are used to listening to classical music will detect the appropriate gravity;
among his many musical talents, Francesco Tristano is known for his Bach interpretations. Jazz fans will be gratified by
the improvisations; Pascal Schumacher is a master in dealing with freely-explored musical spaces. And then there is
Bachar Khalifé; with his roots in the Arabic musical culture as well as the French scene’s rhythmically colorful sound
world, he stands for the acoustic moments that mirror faraway places.
It’s a wild combination, and the consequences surprised even the musicians themselves; the recordings were made
because they had become necessary. Originally it was just a conceptual idea. Up until this recording, their music existed
solely as live concerts, and Khalifé, Schumacher, and Tristano were often asked how one could experience the
uniqueness of the evening. The joy of playing metamorphosed into the challenge of retaining the immediacy of the live
concerts in the studio. The trio took their time with the microphones, experimented, and found a middle-ground between
familiar motifs and spontaneous ideas. Much was born out of the moment, grew into structure and certitude in which
the musicians defined their intuitive borders. Songs came into being, were put into perspective, or reinterpreted from
other musical standpoints – a process that created a consolidated expression.
And that makes it exciting. Khalifé, Schumacher, and Tristano sound mature within their musical aura of happy serenity.
At the same moment, they give the impression that they’re just getting started. They play with melodic, harmonic and
rhythmic self-assurance and at the same time leave their traditional terrain as they seek a group sound that embodies
the three individuals in equal measure. Their music is safety and risk in one, a system of contrasts and extremes that
finds its common denominator without losing its idiosyncrasies. That’s why each listener can discover something
different.
