¬ LUMAS PHOTO. ART. EDITIONS. Discover & order CONTEMPORARY ART. AFFORDABLE WORKS BY 160 RENOWnED INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS. tHOMAS EIGEL Michel comte | new works EDITORIAL ¬ The history of art is not only the history of diversity; it is also the history of duplication. What began centuries ago with engravings in wood reflects – in addition to the ongoing search for new forms of expression – the wish of many artists to share their art and their approach. Our curiosity led us this year not only to the studios of well-known photographers, but also the ateliers of renowned painters, themselves on a quest for new means of expression. It’s time for the handsigned works of Andreas Amrhein on fine Hahnemühle paper. Or the multi-layered acrylic works of Sandra Rauch. It’s time for affordable editions from LUMAS. Among the photographs there are also extraordinary discoveries to be had. Such as the British Grande Dame of photojournalism: Jane Bown, with her world-famous portrait of Samuel Beckett, or Eric Klemm with his legendary photo series “Silent Warriors.” Are you curious about “art in editions”? Then enjoy discovering! Viel Freude beim Entdecken! “Jamie Rishar II” No. MCO43: LTD. Or to follow a single passer-by, who happens to catch your eye, long enough to find out something about them. The Chilean Pablo Zuleta Zahr plays with this ambivalence of big city closeness and social anonymity. His large-format, formally well-composed photos from the year 2004 are an optical score in the urban symphony of chance. The closer you come, the more surprising the connections revealed between the pictured persons. The digitally worked images transform into artificial filmstrips of an openly projected typological aesthetic. They impress 4 you with the diversity of meanings within such a precisely defined perceptional concept. “BAQUEDANO I” No. pzu11: LTD. ED. 100 signed 64 x 180 cm | 25 x 71“ No. pzu12: LTD. ED. 150 signed 45 x 130 cm | 18 x 51“ 5 wolfgang uhlig NEW WORKS ¬ Seascapes invite meditation. Thoughts can wander in any direction while the gaze is locked in mesmerization. Wolfgang Uhlig’s sudden and sensual seascapes are always surprising. Winds sweep through the distance, waves approach in rhythmical lines; the surface changes its shape constantly. No picture resembles another; each stands on its own. Calmly approaching the viewer, they reveal themselves as an impression of what’s inside. Like the blue of the sky, dreams spill from the depth of the imagination and set human life in relation to nature. “sea #8” No. WUH15: LTD. In the series “German Projections” she conquered Frankfurt with a panorama of three, pointed photos stitching across its urban and historical heart. An almond tree-like structure of a wintry bough gives the city a natural hold, while in another motif the photographic language is intentionally dominated by the pulse of the financial center. Dynamically crafted pieces induce a perceptional whirl. In the third motif, the artist transforms the Römerberg into a gothic light service: the stepped gable of the famous houses soar like gothic pillars. The medieval square opens up to the soft sky blue that flows from the streetscape to the middle of the square. “Römer” No. swi109: LTD. ED. 100 SIGNED 70 X 180 cm | 28 x 71“ No. swi110: LTD. In this world we discover the unknown and learn new ways to rediscover what we thought we already knew.” With these words in 2004, art collectors Stefanie Harig and Marc Ullrich opened their very own personal vision of a democratic art edition: Contemporary art in hand-signed originals should be affordable for all art lovers. In the time that followed, the team, with curator Heike Dander at the center, developed a portfolio of contemporary art, archived works, as well as sculptures and objects. From the beginning we, together with artists, discussed and attempted new techniques for presenting paintings in editions. With the Giclée Print on Hahnemühle paper, there is finally a technique available that meets our high standards. In its brilliance and perfected quality, the Giclée Print offers the artist an artistic influence that was previously only possible with edition techniques such as lithography and silk-screen printing. For artists who also want their art to be experienced outside of important collections and big museums, the Giclée Print is a new and fascinating form of expression. With expert knowledge and finesse, our portfolio manager Christina Wendenburg, an art critic and consultant to international collectors, discovered just such artists for LUMAS. Our curator’s “vision” has thus begun. A new chapter in the world of art – the world of LUMAS – excitedly waits to be discovered by you. Enjoy! FROM LEFT TO RIGHT T. Ruehle | R. Scholte | H. Klemm | A. Damp | O. hajek | S. Y. Byun | m. tHUN | H. bÄR 12 ¬ „Die Welt der Kunst. Faites vous plaisir ! 14 erin cone | NEW artist ¬ Picture perfect and surreal graphic distortion are the pillars of Erin Cone’s work. Her unusually framed portraits, in which she herself is often pictured, exude formal beauty and youthful elegance. Soft colors and pastel tones dominate. Her images reach perfection through an extraordinary moment of graphically visual disturbance: a translucent stripe that runs through the photo like a piece of thread pulled out of the arm of a blouse. The young artist explicitly references the duality of figurative realism in her images, developing her own vocabulary of visual disturbance. They are images that excite. “composure” No. eco01: LTD. ED. 100 signed 100 x 74 cm | 39 x 29“ 15 Sandra Rauch | NEW artist ¬ The sensual frenzy that captures New York’s Times Square or the center of Hong Kong could not be better staged than in the work of Sandra Rauch. Logos embedded in glaring paint, flashy street signs or displays directly installed into the image, in which a picture within the picture appears – each detail of this sensually loaded street view triggers a new association. The viewer becomes a participant in the street scene. Depending on the focus, the images seem to change their state of being: they present a many-voiced, complex orchestra of the city in a flamboyant blaze of color like a magical, urban chameleon. PORRO. Objects by Bonaldo. “hong kong I” No. sra01: LTD. ED. 100 signed 100 x 140 cm | 39 x 55“ No. sra02: LTD. ED. 100 signed 60 x 85 cm | 24 x 34“ 17 peter ruehle | NEW artist ¬ Is it possible to find new ways to depict signifianct and world famous cities anymore? Peter Ruehle paints New York, Vienna, Venice, Rome, Florence, Paris, and Berlin in his typical style of distant observation. The long silhouettes of the city become a colored reflection of a horizontal line. But upon closer look, many of the buildings and details of the cities turn out to be fictitious. Distances between landmarks expand or shrink; nothing seems to be fixed to its location in reality. This is exactly the point: to reveal the complex identity of a city, without being subject to the dictate of an allegedly single form of appearance. “paris” (detail) No. pru07: LTD. In his images he stages them as shining heroes of the pose. Although stylized, the figures, with their painted porcelain skin, seem impressively real. Skillfully applied lighting makes them emerge three-dimensionally and places them in tension with the graphic background. Scenic drama is a special quality of these nostalgic, border-crossing images – like the big Dürer hare in front of red firs. “rabbit king” (below) No. aam03: LTD. ED. 100 signed 80 x 57 cm | 32 x 22“ 21 guy diehl | NEW artist ¬ Although rich with artistic references, Guy Diehl’s dark-toned still lifes are distinct images of every shade. The border between painting and photography dissolves within them. The application of paint and direction of light open up a graphic depth and strive to be a family photo or memory, succeeding instead as a representational ensemble of art history. The artistic penetration of the images through transparency and hidden surfaces, highlights and shadows, takes the viewer on a hypnotic journey through a chapter of art history. They are sensual, condensed images teeming with historic, lively materiality. Objects by PORRO. 22 “still life with yves klein blue” No. gdi01: LTD. ED. 100 SIGNED 40 X 46 cm | 16 x 18“ 23 harald klemm | NEW artist ¬ There are picture titles that not only point the viewer towards what can be seen in the image, but also have the power to elicit far more. This is the way Harald Klemm works: the series title “The summer was nice” immediately lures the viewer outdoors. What one expects to find could not appear more idyllic. The promise of summer calls through the titles: “Yellow paradise house,” “Red paradise house,” “Summer side park,” and “Cottages.” And that promise is redeemed immediately. The titles do even more: they evoke comparison with your own memory and experience. Klemm’s images depict pictorial idylls, which – through their own texture and coloring – appear as an expressive pinnacle of themselves, as if these idylls have been multiplied and heightened exponentially compared to their original appearance. A closer look at the colors, and they seem to glow with their own expressive power. One’s impressionistic, internal impression is essential when looking at these images. Even the application of the paint acts as a sense-generating instrument: the genuine feeling of the picture changes with the intensity of the paint. Even the same motif can emit a new feeling, as if the structure of the surface is an optic filter of memory. von Harald Klemm: Bereits der Serienname „The summer was nice“ lockt den Betrachter ins Freie. Was ihn dort erwartet, könnte idyllischer nicht anmuten. ED. 100 SIGNED 24 X 30 cm | 9 x 12“ “cottages” No. hke04: LTD. 25 torsten ruehle | NEW artist ¬ Torsten Ruehle loves the play between narrative and visual ambiguity. His images are mischievous mirrors of reality. There is a level of photorealism in which people, objects, and spaces are realistically reflected. And there is a level of opaque fog, overlaying the image with white glaze: an irritating ambivalence, which is enhanced by the subject choice and unusual perspectives. What at first seems to be a framed splotch reveals itself as a women lounging on a sofa. Has the viewer roused her from what she was doing? It’s not without reason that Ruehle’s subtle world of rooms and images are compared to David Lynch’s cinematic aesthetic. “family interior 3” No. tru03: LTD. ED. 100 SIGNED 40 X 53 cm | 16 x 21“ 26 27 andrea damp | NEW artist ¬ Dynamic shifting of foreground and background. Embedded and arranged figures in a graphic, dreamy, yet distinct environment. Every picture of the young Berlin artist Andrea Damp triggers a firework of the senses. Her work has a high degree of substantial reflection and is an artistic study of discrete structures. THANH-KHOA TRAN | NEW WORKS 32 33 robert lebeck | NEW WORKS ¬ Robert Lebeck is one of the most well-known reportage photographers in the world. He not only travelled for Geo and stern magazines to countries where the pulse of time was beating its strongest; he also managed to capture the silent and plain moments of life. Journalistic integrity was an important pre-condition. He has said many times that he had “outrageous luck.” But in order to make such luck visible, you also need some audacity. With four new motifs from the series “Outrageous Luck” and another slide-collage from the series “Curious about the World,” LUMAS broadens its portfolio of the “master of the smiling moment.” The photos from the series “Shavings,” which depict the shabby shavings of colored pencils, fall smartly in the style of abstract minimalism. In the series “Silent Warriors,” one encounters the quietly brave heart of the Canadian and North American Indians of the present. Based in Vancouver, Klemm traveled across the country to capture more than standard folklore. He got to know Indians at festivals and on the street, and deliberately photographed them in front of a neutral background. Spontaneous trust was very important to him, as he sought an unadulterated view, free from the shadow of skepticism. His pictures are far from the romantic gesture of the century-old photographs of Edward S. Curtis. The openness with which Klemm encounters the descendants of the Great Warriors mirrors itself wonderfully in many portraits “Benny, Tewa, New Mexico” No. ekl13: LTD. In the search for their visage, he gave them something of their inherent value in return. “Kasey, Cherokee, Oklahoma I” No. ekl03: LTD. ED. 100 SIGNED 100 X 81 cm | 39 x 32“ | No. ekl04: LTD. Branislav Kropilak’s preference for technical and industrial motifs has been well known for a long time. Now he emerges as a connoisseur of assembled ghost trains. The trains that we see have never actually crossed these landscapes, because these landscapes never really existed. Everything in the images has been pieced together, like a train itself. Rail by rail, the landscape was laid into the picture format. The references to the model trains as exibited on shelves of model railroad-enthusiats are unmistakable, and the ghost train and fictional landscape realism doesn’t fail to impress. That is because the artificial has been carefully hidden behind the copy and reproduction of the real. There are numerous traces that mysteriously blur the assemblage, or even make it disappear: almost like a clever paradox. Kropilak grounds the character of the model railroad in reality. All frames are constructed down to the exact millimeter in our workshop, then professionally assembled in a dust-free environment. Our photo lab partner: WhiteWall.com LUMAS editions are printed at WhiteWall’s professional photo lab on Fujicolor’s Fujifilm Crystal Archive Digital Paper Type DP II (guaranteed for 75 years) with a Lambda exposure system and then developed using traditional photochemical processes. The works are custom framed or mounted: mountings at WhiteWall are finished by hand to assure museum quality. This form’s edgeless simplicity suits any environment, and thanks to the mounting system, images seem to float only centimeters from the wall. Our solid wood frames are custom made for every piece – down to the exact centimeter – in the WhiteWall workshop. Our photo lab partner: WhiteWall.com 65 ABOUT LUMAS EDITIONS LUMAS was established in 2004 by art collectors in Berlin. Today in 14 galleries around the world, as well as on the website www.lumas.info, LUMAS offers hand-signed original artwork by over 160 international artists, primarily in editions of 75 to 150. These limited editions are higher in number than those of traditional galleries, which enables LUMAS to offer more affordable prices ranging from $170 to $1100. LUMAS editions are traditional photo prints on Fujifilm Crystal Archive Digital Paper Type DP II with a 75-year guarantee. WhiteWall, the renowned professional photo lab for fine art photography, exclusively produces all LUMAS editions and provides mounting or framing according to the artists’ wishes. The five- and six-figure works sold by traditional galleries often see the largest increases in value on the art market; however, as a number of specialized auctions have shown, larger editions such as those sold at LUMAS hold great potential as well – especially considering the original relatively small investment. LUMAS is dedicated to its limited edition policy: once a motif has sold out, no amount of demand will reopen the edition. Sometimes a work’s value may increase only slightly, but sometimes five or ten fold. The best advice remains to purchase a piece of art not as a calculated investment but rather for the joy and love of the work itself. “To collect photographs is to collect the world.” 66 Artist Page Artist Page A.
