Das internationale Tennisturnier in Gstaad ist nicht nur
das im Verhältnis zur Bevölkerung grösste oder das
europaweit höchstgelegene ATP-Turnier, es ist auch
einer der fünfzehn ältesten, heute noch durchgeführten
Tennisanlässe auf internationalem Niveau weltweit.
Was mit einem kleinen, feinen Turnier auf den
Tennisplätzen des Palace Hotel 1915 begann, entwickelte
sich zum weltbekannten Grossanlass – ohne dabei
seine übersichtliche, idyllisch Grösse zu verlieren:
Spieler und Zuschauer begegnen sich nach wie vor
in der Promenade, wo alles auf Tennis ausgerichtet
ist, die heimelige Bergwelt lässt das Turniergelände
behütet eingebettet und beschaulich erstrahlen. Das
familiäre Tennisfest, bei welchem stets der Sport im
Zentrum geblieben ist, findet fernab von Stadtlärm und
Alltagsstress, inmitten gemütlicher Ferienstimmung
statt. Hier fühlen sich Gäste und Spieler wohl. Das
Geheimnis: Das Turnier ist so gross, weil es so klein ist.
The international tennis tournament in Gstaad is not
just the largest ATP tournament in relation to the local
population, or even the highest in Europe; it is also one of
the fifteen oldest international tennis events in the world
still running today. What began as a small but exclusive
tournament on the tennis courts at the Gstaad Palace
Hotel in 1915 is now a world-famous major sporting
event – but it has not lost its manageable, idyllic size.
Players and spectators still come across one another
on the village’s promenade, where everything is geared
towards tennis, and the charming Alpine landscape
shelters the tournament grounds and gives everything
an air of tranquillity. The intimate tennis festival, in which
the sport has always been the focus, takes place a world
away from noisy cities and the stresses of everyday life, in
a relaxed holiday atmosphere. Guests and tennis players
alike feel at home here. What is the tournament’s secret?
It is so great because it is so small.

Das internationale Tennisturnier in Gstaad hat
dank umsichtiger und mutiger Organisatoren, der
Verankerung in der Bevölkerung sowie seiner – trotz
stetem Wandel im Tennissport immer behüteten –
besonderen heimeligen Atmosphäre grossartige 100
Jahre hinter sich; mit unglaublichen spielerischen und
gesellschaftlichen Höhepunkten und einigen wenigen
finanziellen und ideellen Schwierigkeiten. Aufgeben kam
jedoch nie in Frage: Rückschlägen wurde im kleinen
Bergdorf mit noch grösserem Engagement begegnet;
und dies zahlte sich aus: Legenden wie Rod Laver,
Guillermo Vilas, Marat Safin, Boris Becker, Gustavo
Kuerten, Stan Wawrinka oder auch Roger Federer
erwiesen dem Alpenturnier – mehrmals – die Ehre.
Seit 2001 dürfen auch wir Teil dieser grossartigen
Erfolgsgeschichte sein. Nach zwei Jahren Unterstützung
im Sponsoringbereich (2001-2002) haben wir 2006 die
operative Ausrichtung des Turniers übernommen und
wollen an die Erfolgsgeschichte anknüpfen. 2013 mit
Roger Federer und Stan Wawrinka gleich zwei Schweizer
an der Spitze der Setzliste präsentieren zu können,
war ein Höhepunkt, den wir mit den Festivitäten zum
100-Jährigen im Sommer 2015 übertreffen möchten.

Thanks to its prudent but courageous organisers, its firm
place in the hearts of the local population and – despite
continual change in the sport of tennis – its intimate
atmosphere, the Gstaad tennis tournament can look
back on an amazing 100 years – studded with incredible
sporting and social highlights as well as the occasional
financial and conceptual problem. Giving up, however,
was never on the cards: setbacks in the small mountain
village were met with even greater commitment and this
approach has paid dividends: legends such as Rod Laver,
Guillermo Vilas, Marat Safin, Boris Becker, Gustavo
Kuerten, Stan Wawrinka and Roger Federer have paid
tribute to the Alpine tournament through their repeated
participation.
Since 2001 it has been our privilege to be part of this
wonderful success story. After supporting the event as
the sponsoring agency for two years (2001-2002), we took
over the operational management of the tournament in
2006, thereby becoming even more closely involved with
its success. Being able to present two Swiss players,
Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka, as the top two seeds
in 2013 was a major highlight that we aim to surpass
with the 100-year anniversary celebrations scheduled for
summer 2015.

perseverance and boundless enthusiasm, Gstaad’s
international tennis tournament is celebrating its 100th
anniversary in 2015:

On behalf of the ATP, I would like to congratulate the
Credit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad on a very special 100th
anniversary in 2015.
Die ATP World Tour umfasst 61 Turniere in 31 Ländern,
und wir sind ausgesprochen stolz, Gstaad zu einer der
vielen attraktiven Destinationen auf der Tour zählen zu
dürfen. Was die World Tour unter anderem so besonders
macht, ist der ganz eigene Charakter und Charme von
jedem einzelnen Turnier. Dies gilt zweifelsohne auch für
Gstaad – kaum ein anderes Turnier auf der Tour findet
nämlich vor einer solch atemberaubenden Kulisse statt.
The ATP World Tour features 61 tournaments in 31
countries, and we are extremely proud to be able to count
Gstaad among the many attractive destinations that
feature on the Tour. One of the many great things about
the ATP World Tour is that each tournament has its own
personality and charm. This certainly applies to Gstaad, a
tournament that provides one of the most breath-taking
backdrops to any event on Tour.

traditionsreiche Geschichte zurück und war stets ein
Höhepunkt der Sandplatzsaison. In die Siegerliste trugen

The ATP event in Gstaad has one of the longest and
richest histories of all our events and has consistently
provided a highlight to the summer clay-court season. Its
list of former champions contains many names that will
go down among the greatest in the history of the sport,
including ATP World No.1s such as Ilie Nastase, Stefan
Edberg, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, and Roger Federer.

Over the years, this traditional event has developed into
a highlight of the season which not only offers tennis at
the highest level but also touches the heart. The sport of
tennis needs a pearl like Gstaad. The importance to the
Swiss sporting landscape of this tournament steeped in
tradition is immeasurable! I wish the tournament great
success for the next 100 years along with my warmest
congratulations on its achievements to date. And
remember: success not only endorses, it also commits!
Über Jahre hat sich der Traditionsanlass zu einem
Saisonhöhepunkt entwickelt, der nicht nur Tennis auf

1915 The Gstaad Palace Hotel (known at the time as the
“Royal Hotel, Winter & Gstaad Palace”) organises an
international tennis tournament – the “Gents’ Singles
Championships presented by Mappin and Webb Ltd,
Lausanne” – in collaboration with the Lawn Tennis Club
(LTC) Gstaad. The event takes place on tennis courts
installed two years previously, probably the first courts
in the Bernese Oberland. Victor de Coubasch, an active
player on the international tennis scene, wins the
tournament on a clay surface. In spite of what the name
of the Lawn Tennis Club implies, tennis is never played
on grass courts in Gstaad. Tennis tournaments are a
regular fixture for the next few years.
1915 Das damalige „Royal Hotel Winter & Gstaad Palace“
(Palace) organisiert gemeinsam mit dem Lawn Tennis
Club (LTC) Gstaad auf den zwei Jahre zuvor erstellten
Tennisplätzen – den wohl ersten im Berner Oberland –
erstmals einen internationalen Tennis-Wettbewerb, die
„Gent’s Singles Championships presented by Mappin and
Webb LtD, Lausanne“. Victor de Coubasch, ein aktiver
Spieler auf internationalem Niveau, gewinnt das Turnier
auf Sand. Auf Rasen wird in Gstaad nie gespielt, auch
wenn der Name des LTC dies impliziert. In den nächsten
Jahren wird regelmässig ein Turnier durchgeführt.
1917 Die Beteiligung am internationalen Tennisturnier
in Gstaad ist sehr gross. Die Französin Germaine
Golding, Weltmeisterin von 1914, befindet sich unter den
Teilnehmenden. Es werden fünf Wettbewerbe, Damenund Herren-Einzel, Damen-, Herren- und Mixed-Doppel
ausgetragen.
1917 The international tennis tournament in Gstaad
attracts a very high number of participants, including
the French player and 1914 women’s world champion
Germaine Golding. The tournament is made up of
five competitions: men’s and women’s singles, men’s
doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
1922 Gstaad, Villars und Champery bewerben sich um die
Ausrichtung der vom Schweizerischen Tennisverband
organisierten „Internationalen Meisterschaften
der Schweiz“ (Internationale) 1923, die seit 1897
abwechslungsweise in verschiedenen Schweizer Orten
ausgetragen werden. Villars erhält den Zuschlag. Somit
wird beim Palace in Gstaad wiederum ein „normales“
internationales Turnier durchgeführt.

1922 Gstaad, Villars and Champery bid to host the
“Internationale Meisterschaften der Schweiz”
(Swiss International Tennis Championships – the
“Internationals”) organised by the Swiss Tennis
Association (Swiss Tennis) in 1923. The tournament has
been played at alternating venues in Switzerland since
1897. The Villars bid is accepted, so the Gstaad Palace
has to make do with hosting a “normal” international
tournament once again.
1928 Die Eisbahn Gstaad AG, Besitzerin des Areals, auf
welchem heute das Tennisturnier stattfindet, errichtet
für die Eishockey-, Eislauf- und Curling-Zuschauer
eine gedeckte Tribüne mit gut 200 Sitzplätzen. Sie wird
später und ist auch heute noch – ausgebaut – Teil der
Tribünenanlage des Tennisturniers.
1928 Eisbahn Gstaad AG, the owner of the site where
the tennis tournament is played today, builds a covered
stand with a good 200 seats for spectators at ice hockey,
ice skating and curling events. It later forms part of the
stands for the tennis tournament and still does so today,
albeit extended.

1930 Auf Anregung des Palace-Direktors Wilhelm Michel
und dank dem Einverständnis und der Finanzierung
durch die Eisbahn Gstaad AG, werden zur Erweiterung
des Sportangebotes mitten im Dorf für 18’000 Schweizer
Franken drei parallel nebeneinander liegende
Tennisplätze errichtet. Der gleichzeitig gegründete LTC
Sarina kümmert sich als Sektion des „Verkehrsvereins
Gstaad und Umgebung“ um den Betrieb. Auf den
Palace-Plätzen findet derweil – nebst dem jährlichen
internationalen Turnier – eine Länder-Begegnung
zwischen Belgien und der Schweiz statt, welche die
Schweiz in 16 Einzeln und acht Doppeln mit 31 Sätzen zu
26 Sätzen gewinnt.
1930 At the suggestion of Wilhelm Michel, Director of the
Gstaad Palace, and having secured consent and funding
from Eisbahn Gstaad AG, three parallel tennis courts
are installed in the middle of the village to supplement
the local sporting facilities. This project costs 18,000
Swiss francs. The tennis courts are run by LTC Sarina,
which was founded at the same time, as part of the
“Verkehrsverein Gstaad und Umgebung” (Tourist office of
Gstaad and the surrounding area). Meanwhile, in addition
to hosting the annual international tournament, the
Gstaad Palace stages a contest between Switzerland and
Belgium, which Switzerland wins by 31 sets to 26 in 16
singles and eight doubles matches.
1931 In diesem und in den folgenden Jahren bis 1938

international tournament takes place on LTC Sarina’s
village tennis courts and the “Championnats de Gstaad”
are held by LTC Gstaad on the Gstaad Palace courts.
1932 Der LTC Gstaad und der LTC Sarina tragen
gemeinsam die Schweizermeisterschaften mit 70
Teilnehmenden aus. Gespielt wird sowohl auf den Dorfwie auch auf den Palace-Plätzen. Nebst Schiedsrichtern
stehen bereits Ballboys im Einsatz. Die Preisverleihung
mit grossem Ball findet im Palace statt und gilt als
Vorreiter der späteren unvergesslichen Tennis-GalaAbende. In den Medien wird die Schweizermeisterschaft
als Erfolg gefeiert.
1932 LTC Gstaad and LTC Sarina join forces to host the
Swiss championships, which involve 70 participants.
The matches are played on both the village courts and
those at the Gstaad Palace. The tournament is one of
the first to feature ball boys as well as umpires. The
award ceremony, which takes place in the Gstaad Palace
in conjunction with a grand ball, sets the trend for the
unforgettable gala evenings held at subsequent tennis
events. The Swiss championships are lauded as a great
success by the media.

Spieler und 16 Spielerinnen aus Grossbritannien,
Italien, Frankreich, Österreich und Ägypten in den
fünf Kategorien Herren- und Damen-Einzel, Herren-,
Damen und Mixed-Doppel an. Zusätzlich wird in einer
Extraklasse für Schweizer Spieler um den Coupe
Suisse gespielt. Die meisten Spiele werden auf den
Palace-Plätzen ausgetragen; die Finalspiele, bei denen
Naturalgaben auf die Sieger warten, finden auf den
Dorf-Plätzen statt. Der Preisverleihung am Sonntag mit
Gala-Abend im Palace wohnen die meisten Spielerinnen
und Spieler bei.
1937 32 male and 16 female players from the UK,
Italy, France, Austria and Egypt take part in the
“Internationals” in Gstaad across five categories: men’s
and women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles
and mixed doubles. Swiss players also compete in an
extra contest for the “Coupe Suisse” (Swiss Cup). Most
of the matches are played on the Gstaad Palace courts,
although the finals – the winners of which are rewarded
with payment in kind – take place on the village tennis
courts. Most of the players attend the award ceremony
and gala evening at the Gstaad Palace on the Sunday.
1938 Die „Internationalen“ werden in diesem Jahr Luzern
zugesprochen, weshalb die beiden Tennisclubs in Gstaad
entscheiden, gemeinsam Ende Juli ein internationales
Turnier – die „Gstaad Championships“ – auszurichten.
Nach Uneinigkeit bei der Wahl des Spielortes beschliesst
man, das Los entscheiden zu lassen. Schauplatz der
Spiele wird das Palace, seit diesem Jahr unter der
Direktion von Ernst Scherz sen., neuer LTC Gstaad
Präsident, der zukünftig im Hintergrund die Fäden des
Tennisturniers ziehen wird. Ein kleineres Turnier wird
vom LTC Sarina organisiert.
1938 The honour of hosting this year’s “Internationals” is
awarded to Lucerne, so the two tennis clubs in Gstaad
decide to hold their own joint international tournament
– the “Gstaad Championships” – in late July. After some
disagreement over where the competition should be
played, the decision is taken to draw lots. The Gstaad
Palace, now under the management of the new LTC
Gstaad President Ernst Scherz sen. – the man who
will pull the strings behind the scenes of the tennis
tournament in the years to come – is chosen as the venue
for the matches. A smaller tournament is organised by
LTC Sarina.
1939 Zum zweiten Mal werden von den beiden
Tennisclubs gemeinsam die „Gstaad Championships“

1939 For the second time, the two tennis clubs join forces
to stage the “Gstaad Championships”, henceforth the
only international tournament in the Saanenland region.
The tournament is relocated from the Gstaad Palace
to the village, as it is easier to construct a stand there.
However, the standard of tennis drops somewhat as
only players who are deemed unfit for military service
or international players who are not significantly
affected by the Second World War are able to take part.
Nevertheless, the tournament proves a success.

marriage to future Tournament Director Köbi Hermenjat,
takes over the LTC presidency and becomes President
of the tennis tournament’s Organising Committee.
Cadonau, a highly driven businessman, establishes
countless contacts with foreign players to recruit top
participants for the “Gstaad Championships”.

1946 Determined to once again secure a high-calibre
field for the “Gstaad Championships”, Lorenz Cadonau
uses financial means to try and attract foreign players
for the first time. Meanwhile, a shortage of funds after
the war makes it difficult to keep the infrastructure up
to standard: the materials are old and balls slip through
the broken net. Tireless staff spend the nights mending it
and redrawing the lines under the floodlights.

in August, the mountain village plays host to the SwissBelgian contest in September. This prompts sceptical
reactions in some quarters, with the notion of staging an
outdoor event in the autumn at 1,050 metres above sea
level considered a risky undertaking. The official Swiss
tennis magazine pays tribute to the village: “Gstaad has
always been regarded as an enterprising spa resort.”

used to love competing in the Gstaad tennis tournament.
It was such a beautiful venue, surrounded by the
mountains and Alpine pastures.
Mit der Höhe hatte ich nie Probleme, da ich auch
Turniere in Johannesburg, auf ähnlicher Höhe, gespielt
habe. Nach den Grand Slam Turnieren nahmen viele
australische Athleten gerne am Gstaader Turnier teil, da
wir stets aussergewöhnlich nett umsorgt wurden. Weil
man so gut zu uns geschaut hat, wollten wir natürlich
unbedingt als Gegenleistung das Turnier gewinnen, was
mir 1964 sowohl im Einzel wie auch im Doppel gelang.
I never had a problem with the altitude as I’d played in
tournaments in Johannesburg at a similar height above
sea level. After the Grand Slam tournaments, a lot of
Australian athletes liked to compete at Gstaad because
we were always extremely well looked after. And because
we were so well cared for, we naturally wanted to win the
tournament in return, which I succeeded in doing in 1964
in both the singles and the doubles.
Das Gstaader Turnier war stets ein Highlight der Tour
und ich denke gerne an die schöne Zeit im Berner
Oberland zurück.

Warum? Ich konnte einfach nicht glauben, wie schön
es hier war: Die Berge, der Zug, der um den Court
herumfuhr und pfiff, wenn man den Ball für den
Service hochwarf, die heimeligen Holzbauten... Es gibt
kein anderes Turnier auf der Tour, das in einer solch
atemberaubenden Umgebung stattfindet.
could barely concentrate when I played here for the
first time in the 1950s. Why not? Because I could hardly
believe how beautiful it all was: the mountains, the train
that ran around the court and whistled when you threw
the ball up to serve, the homely wooden buildings...
There’s no other tournament on the tour that is held in
such breathtaking surroundings.
After Wimbledon, this stopover in the Bernese Oberland
was always a welcome diversion and the fast surface
suited my serve-and-volley game very well. The
atmosphere here was always very relaxed and my family
and friends used to come along too. We players spent
most of our time at the courts and now and again there
was a party at the Palace Hotel. This is also where
the main draw and prize-giving were held. I won a few
watches and thanks to my five victories was able to keep
one of the cups. This is probably why the stadium was
named after me in 2002. It’s an incredibly great honour
for a sportsperson to have a place named after him or
her. And when this happens outside one’s home country,
it’s an even bigger honour. So once again, many, many
thanks for that!
Nach Wimbledon war der Stopp im Berner Oberland
stets eine willkommene Abwechslung und mir kam
der schnelle Belag mit meinem Serve-and-Volley-Spiel
entgegen. Die Stimmung hier war immer sehr entspannt
und meine Familie und Freunde waren mit dabei. Die
meiste Zeit verbrachten wir Spieler auf dem Platz,
daneben feierten wir ab und an im Palace Hotel ein Fest.
Hier wurde auch das Main Draw ausgelost und fand die
Preisverleihung statt. Ich habe einige Uhren gewonnen
und durfte einen der Pokale dank meinen fünf Siegen
behalten. Diese sind wohl auch der Grund, weshalb
das Stadion 2002 nach mir benannt wurde. Es ist eine
unglaublich grosse Ehre, wenn eine Stätte nach einem
Sportler benannt wird. Geschieht dies noch ausserhalb
seines Heimatlandes, dann ist die Honoration noch
grösser. Nochmals herzlichen Dank hierfür!

I liked Gstaad so much that I’ve been coming back
repeatedly even after my active career ended. For 42
years I’ve been spending every summer at the Palace
Hotel, where I hold the Roy Emerson Tennis Weeks.
When you love the game as much as I do, you never
lose your enjoyment of it. The opportunity to indulge my
passion in my second home is a huge blessing because
there’s no other place like this: Gstaad is simply unique.
Gstaad hat mir so gut gefallen, dass ich auch
nach meiner Aktivkarriere immer wieder hierher
zurückgekehrt bin. Seit nun 42 Jahren verbringe ich
jeden Sommer im Palace Hotel, wo ich die Roy Emerson
Tennis Weeks leite. Denn wenn man das Spiel so liebt
wie ich es tue, dann verliert man nie den Spass daran.
Die Möglichkeit, meine Leidenschaft in meiner zweiten
Heimat ausüben zu dürfen, ist ein grosses Glück. Denn
es gibt keinen zweiten Ort wie diesen: Gstaad ist einfach

1948 Gstaad is awarded the “Internationals” for the
second time. The stands are extended to accommodate
100 more spectators and Lorenz Cadonau steps up his
efforts to attract the best players to the Saanenland.
His aim is to establish Gstaad as Switzerland’s answer
to Wimbledon. The media gradually show more and
more interest in the sport of tennis, although a dark
cloud hangs over it this year: it rains almost constantly
throughout the tournament. Even though both the Gstaad
Palace and the Park Hotel make their courts available for
matches, not even the quarter finals can be played out
to the finish. In spite of this, the Organising Committee
gets away with a relatively small financial loss. The award
ceremony is held at the Park Hotel.
1948 Zum zweiten Mal werden Gstaad die
„Internationalen“ zugesprochen. Die Tribünen
werden um 100 Plätze erweitert und Lorenz Cadonau
unternimmt noch grössere Anstrengungen um die besten
Spielerinnen und Spieler ins Saanenland zu holen. Sein

Langsam wächst das Medieninteresse am Tennissport,
das in diesem Jahr jedoch stark getrübt wird: Während
dem Turnier regnet es fast ununterbrochen. Obwohl
zusätzlich auf den Plätzen des Park Hotels (Park) sowie
den Palace-Plätzen Partien ausgetragen werden, können
nicht einmal die Viertelfinals zu Ende gespielt werden.
Trotzdem muss das OK nur ein verhältnismässig kleines
Defizit hinnehmen. Die Preisverleihung findet im Park
statt.

court for the first time to form a Centre Court for the
finals along with the covered fixed stand.

anlässlich der Preisverleihung am Schlussabend ein
Tennisball im Maxime-Saal des Palace statt; gewürzt
mit erstaunlichen Darbietungen der Spielerinnen und
Spieler. In der ersten Ausgabe treten einige der Sportler
unter der Regie von Lilly Wollener – die polnische
Journalistin und Spielervermittlerin trägt einen grossen
Teil zum Erfolg des Turniers bei, indem sie das Terrain
für Verhandlungen mit den Spielerinnen und Spielern
vorbereitet und Kontakte pflegt – vor geladene Gäste. So
spielt beispielsweise der Italiener Sergio Tacchini eine
Stripteasetänzerin und Fred von Grünigen singt.
1957 75 active tennis players take part in the
“Internationals” in Gstaad, which are heralded in the
newspaper “Der Bund” as the second Wimbledon of the
year. The award ceremony now coincides with a tennis
ball in the Gstaad Palace’s Maxime Hall on the final
evening, with some surprising performances by players
often adding to the entertainment. Some of the players
start what would become something of a tradition at this
event by putting on a show for the invited guests, with the
Italian player Sergio Tacchini playing a striptease dancer,
for example, and Fred von Grünigen singing. They are
directed by Lilly Wollener, a Polish journalist and players’
agent who contributes significantly to the success of
the tournament by paving the way for negotiations with
players and forging contacts.
1949 The organisers refuse to be put off by the previous
year’s washout. In fact, they opt for a very daring
approach: while other locations are no longer keen to
host the “Internationals” for fear of making a loss, Gstaad
is granted a budget of 5,000 Swiss francs for staging the
tournament. This shows good planning, as the players
are gradually starting to demand reimbursement for
their travel costs. The stands in the village are constantly
filled to bursting and once again the Gstaad Palace and
Park Hotel tennis courts are used for matches too. A
press officer is appointed in response to growing media
interest. This proves a shrewd move, as this is the year
when the Drobny affair, as well as sporting successes,
thrusts Gstaad firmly into the media spotlight (see
anecdotes on page 52 ).

Medieninteresse steigt, wird ein Pressechef engagiert:
Gut vorausgeplant, denn genau in diesem Jahr sorgt
nebst den sportlichen Erfolgen die Affäre Drobny dafür,
dass Gstaad in aller Munde ist (siehe Anekdoten Seite
52).

um eine Revanche für Wimbledon spielen zu können.
Rod Laver nimmt als Wimbledonsieger in Gstaad teil
und gewinnt das Turnier. Im selben Jahr gelingt ihm der
Gewinn des Grand Slam.
1962 During the early 1960s, Gstaad attracts some of
the world’s top players, many of them seeking revenge
for performances at Wimbledon. Rod Laver comes to
Gstaad as Wimbledon champion and ends up winning the
tournament. This year he claims all four major singles
titles to win the overall Grand Slam.
1963 Die „Internationalen“ warten mit einer
ausgesprochen guten Besetzung auf, auch wenn
Absagen in letzter Minute hingenommen werden
müssen. Um dem Zuschaueraufkommen gerecht
zu werden, wird für 30’000 Schweizer Franken eine

Ort. Die Einheimischen werden dazu aufgerufen, das Dorf
für die Tenniswoche zu beflaggen.

additional stand is built at a cost of 30,000 Swiss francs to
accommodate the high spectator turnout. 30 journalists
are present at the event and the locals are asked to deck
the village in flags in honour of the week-long tennis
tournament.

1965 The tournament is in a poor financial situation,
recording a loss of 36,000 Swiss francs. This prompts
discussions over whether or not the tournament should
be dropped. “If we only run the tournament every two
or three years, it will soon lose its important status and
eventually disappear,” says the owner of the Gstaad
Palace, Ernst Scherz senior, with conviction. To help the
Organising Committee out, he offers the services of his
directors Bernardo Meier and Hans-Ruedi Schaerer, who
joins the tournament team as secretary in 1966 and later
becomes President of the Organising Committee. Within
the next two years, the 36,000-franc deficit is able to be
paid off. A tournament magazine is published for the first
time.

besten Tennisspieler der Welt – duellieren sich im
Finale, mit dem besseren Ende für Emerson. MartiniRossi lädt zum ersten Tennis-Cocktail auf der PalaceTerrasse. Am Schlussabend zeigen einige Spielerinnen
und Spieler unter der Leitung von Dick Moody eine
muntere Darbietung: Roy Emerson, Fred Stolle und John

1966 With the field now reduced to 16 women and 32
men, the “Internationals” in Gstaad once again offer
a scintillating tennis spectacle in front of sell-out
crowds. The matches now start on the Tuesday and
the middle of the three village tennis courts is left free,
giving the spectators a much better view. Roy Emerson
and reigning Wimbledon champion Manuel Santana –
currently ranked amongst the best tennis players in the
world – battle it out in the final, with Emerson emerging
victorious. Martini & Rossi hosts the first tennis cocktail
party on the terrace of the Gstaad Palace. On the final
evening, some of the players put on a lively performance
under the direction of Dick Moody: Roy Emerson, Fred
Stolle and John Newcombe play scantily clad Davis Cup
players from the Stone Age, taking on the Aztecs. Later
on, the female players dance the can-can.
1967 The “Internationals” are held as an amateur
tournament for the last time. The two best players – Roy
Emerson and Manuel Santana – once again face each
other in the final. The stands are extended further to
cope with the high number of spectators.

doch keines war wie Gstaad. Hier war alles klein aber
fein. Meist war ich im Gstaad Palace untergebracht. Das
hat mir natürlich sehr gut gefallen! In Gstaad kannte ich
viele Zuschauer und genoss als Schweizer Spielerin die
Aufmerksamkeit der Presse. Aber es gab auch spitze
Zungen in Gstaad: So sagte beispielsweise jemand, dass
die Flugzeuge nicht zu tief über Gstaad fliegen dürften
während die Frauen spielten; würden diese doch so hohe
Bälle schlagen. Vielleicht war das der Grund, dass wir
meistens um 8 Uhr früh die Matches spielen mussten...

’ve played in a lot of tournaments all over the world;
but Gstaad was unlike any other. Here everything was
small but exquisite. I usually stayed at the Gstaad Palace.
Naturally I was very happy with that! At Gstaad I knew
a lot of the spectators and as a Swiss player I enjoyed
the attention of the press. But there was also some
malicious talk at Gstaad. For example someone said that
aeroplanes were not allowed to fly too low over Gstaad
while the women were playing in case they were hit by
high balls. Maybe that’s why we generally had to play our
matches at 8 o’clock in the morning...
Nach zwei erfolglosen Teilnahmen erreichte ich 1978 das
Finale, das ich gegen Virginia Ruzici verlor. 1979 gelang
mir dann der Sieg gegen Yvona Brzakova. Preisgeld
gab es keines, dennoch wird mir dieser Sieg immer in
Erinnerung bleiben.
After two unsuccessful tournaments, I reached the final
in 1978 and lost to Virginia Ruzici. In 1979 I managed to
win against Yvona Brzakova. There was no prize money,

ls Schweizer in Gstaad zu triumphieren ist etwas
ganz Besonderes. Das Swiss Open und die
Championships in Wimbledon waren die einzigen
Turniere, die ich schon als Kind am Fernsehen verfolgte.
Deshalb wollte ich in Gstaad unbedingt einmal den Titel
holen. 1980 war wegen des Regens ein ganz spezielles
Turnier. Den ersten Satz gegen Ulrich Pinner, der wegen
Dunkelheit abgebrochen wurde, bestritt ich am Montag,
den zweiten erst am Freitag.
o triumph at Gstaad as a Swiss player is something
very special. The Swiss Open and the Wimbledon
Championships were the only tournaments I followed on
television as a child. For that reason I felt I had to win
the title at least once at Gstaad. 1980 was a very unusual
tournament because of the rain. I played my first set
against Ulrich Pinner, which was abandoned because of
the dark, on Monday, and the second set not until Friday.
On Tuesday and Wednesday my match was scheduled
first in the order of play, what made me be on
tenterhooks. From the Friday onwards things happened
in rapid succession and I no longer had time to get
nervous. Because of the slippery clay surface, I played
my games in pimpled grass shoes. This would no longer
be allowed today. My racquets were strung with natural
gut strings. Because of the humidity, the strings broke
more often than normal and I used four or five racquets
in each match. Until the final I never dropped a set but
then my encounter with the Australian Kim Warwick was
a close-run thing: I won it in the tie-break of the third set.
Incidentally the final didn’t take place until the Monday –
at this Swiss Open everything was slightly different to a
normal tournament. But in retrospect that didn’t worry
me at all. The important thing was that I had fulfilled my
childhood dream.
Dienstag und Mittwoch sass ich wie auf Nadeln, da
mein Match als erster angesetzt war. Ab Freitag ging
es dann Schlag auf Schlag; ich hatte gar nicht mehr
Zeit, nervös zu werden. Die Partien bestritt ich aufgrund
des rutschigen Sandbelags in mit Noppen versehenen
Rasenschuhen. Das wäre heute nicht mehr erlaubt.
Meine Rackets waren mit Volldarmsaiten bespannt.
Die Bespannung riss aufgrund der Feuchtigkeit noch
häufiger als sonst; ich verbrauchte pro Match vier bis
fünf Schläger. Bis zum Finale gab ich keinen Satz ab; das
Endspiel gegen den Australier Kim Warwick war dann
eine knappe Angelegenheit; ich gewann es im Tiebreak
des dritten Durchgangs. Das Finale fand übrigens erst
am Montag statt – an diesem Swiss Open lief wirklich
alles anders als an einem normalen Turnier. Doch
das war mir im Nachhinein egal. Hauptsache, mein

1968 The era of the Open tournaments begins, with
competitions no longer open exclusively to amateurs and
many players now being “offered” by agents to organisers
for a particular fee. Gone are the times when players
were prepared to make an appearance in return for
board and lodging, with expenses no higher than 1,000
dollars. The Gstaad Organising Committee successfully
concludes a four-year contract with American agent
Lamar Hunt, stipulating that five of his “Handsome Eight”
players (Nikola Pilić, Butch Buchholz, Dennis Ralston,
Pierre Barthes, Cliff Drysdale, Roger Taylor, John
Newcombe and Tony Roche) would come to Gstaad for
20,000 dollars per year. Gstaad can even boast a better
field of players than the French Open in 1968 and 1970, as
none of the “Handsome Eight” are involved in the Paris
tournament in these two years. Another new feature of
the Open tournaments is that a draw is held to determine
who plays who, rather than matches being arranged at
the organisers’ discretion. A Tournament Director is also
appointed; in Gstaad, this role is assigned to Jacques
“Köbi” Hermenjat.

Es gelingt dem Gstaader OK mit dem US-Agenten Lamar
Hunt einen Vierjahresvertrag abzuschliessen, gemäss
dem für 20’000 Dollar pro Jahr fünf seiner „Handsome
Eight“ (Nikola Pilić, Butch Buchholz, Dennis Ralston,
Pierre Barthes, Cliff Drysdale, Roger Taylor, John
Newcombe und Tony Roche) nach Gstaad anreisen. Da
die „Handsome Eight“ 1968 und 1970 nicht am French
Open antreten, hat Gstaad in diesen Jahren das bessere
Teilnehmerfeld! Neu an den Open-Turnieren ist zudem,
dass die Begegnungen ausgelost und nicht mehr nach
Gutdünken zusammengestellt werden und dass ein
Turnierdirektor ernannt wird. In Gstaad übernimmt diese

1969 Following negotiations, the Gstaad Organising
Committee obtains exclusive rights to stage the
“Internationals” and gives them a new name: the
“Swiss Open”. The Swiss Tennis Association agrees to
this immediately, as Gstaad is the only venue prepared
to bear all the financial risks involved. In America, for
example, many major cities are forced to pull out of
hosting tournaments due to financial concerns. For the
Gstaad organisers, who are not afraid to take the risk,
this situation brings substantial rewards: more than 100
players apply to take part in the tournament, with the
finals broadcast on Swiss television.

tournament have expressed an interest in supporting it,
the Organising Committee sets up the Supporters’ Club
under the leadership of Fred von Grünigen and HansRuedi Schaerer (see page 77). The television stations
broadcast the finals live from Gstaad. The mixed doubles
competition is included in the tournament for the last
time.
1973 The Swiss Open benefits from a high-calibre field,
as many players who did not take part in Wimbledon
due to a boycott choose to come to Gstaad instead.
The boycott is sparked by Niki Pilić’s refusal to play
for Yugoslavia in the Davis Cup and his subsequent
suspension by the Yugoslavian Lawn Tennis Association,
which prevents him from playing at Wimbledon. While
Wimbledon accepts the suspension, the Association of
Tennis Professionals (ATP), the players’ union, stands
behind Pilić and refuses to send any of its players to
Wimbledon out of protest. Rain in Gstaad forces the
Swiss Open finals to be postponed to the Monday.

Gstaad does not join the Grand Prix circuit at this stage,
which turns out to be a good decision as the players’
agents reject the Grand Prix concept in the first year. As a
result, Gstaad attracts some big-name players, including
five of the “Handsome Eight”, to come and compete
for the staggered prize money on offer. It is therefore
regarded as Europe’s fourth most important tennis
tournament.

immediately after Wimbledon, and is included in the
second highest of five categories. Only Wimbledon, Forest

an alternative playing venue in the event of rain – with
the agreement of both players concerned – until a ban is
imposed on switching between different court surfaces.

rangieren. Bei den Damen nimmt hingegen die Qualität
ab; man führt keine Doppelkonkurrenz mehr durch.
Köbi Hermenjat wird am 1. September als Mitglied und
Europavertreter in den „International Professional Tennis
Council“ gewählt und kann damit Struktur, Datum und
Position des Gstaader Turniers im Kalender beeinflussen
und intensiven Kontakt zu den Spielern pflegen.

invests half a million Swiss francs in infrastructural
improvements: a new trolley apparatus is acquired to
make it easier to move the village stand to the second
court to create the Centre Court for the finals. With
players now often leaving Gstaad before the end of the
tournament, the final evening gala at the Gstaad Palace
takes place for the last time.
1983 The Swiss Open has a title sponsor for the first
time. However, the leasing company Keller und Partner
turns out to be involved in fraudulent activities. It takes
intensive efforts on the part of the Organising Committee
to secure the 150,000 Swiss francs promised by the
company (see anecdotes on page 56). The standard of
tennis in the men’s competition is once again extremely
high; players must be ranked in the top 30 to be seeded
in the Gstaad tournament. By contrast, the quality of
the women’s competition is in decline and the women’s
doubles contest is scrapped. On 1 September, Köbi
Hermenjat is elected as a member and European
representative on the Men’s International Professional
Tennis Council, giving him a say in how the Gstaad
tournament is structured, when it is scheduled and
where it is placed in the tennis calendar.

n Gstaad zu spielen bedeutete für mich das NonplusUltra: Der wunderbare Standort, die freundlichen Leute,
die fantastische Stimmung und das familiäre Umfeld,
in welches man stets sehr herzlich aufgenommen
wurde, habe ich in bester Erinnerung. Köbi Hermenjat
und Hans-Ruedi Schaerer haben das Turnier zu einer
ganz besonderen Stadion im Tenniszirkus gemacht. In
Gstaad war man als Mensch wertvoll und nicht nur eine
Nummer, als welche man sich an anderen Turnieren
fühlte. Meinen ersten Auftritt in Gstaad hatte ich 1978,
als mir als Schweizermeister eine Wildcard angeboten
wurde, die ich natürlich ohne zu zögern angenommen
habe.

which is how we were made to feel at other tournaments.
I competed at Gstaad for the first time in 1978, when
as Swiss champion I was offered a wild card, which I
naturally accepted without hesitation.
After retiring, I accompanied my protégé Rolf Hertzog
to the Gstaad tournament in 1986 and spontaneously
decided, out of love for the game, to enter the still
incomplete qualifying tournament. After victories against
Mezzadri, Srejber, Smid and Sanchez I came up against
Stefan Edberg in the final and had to admit defeat at 6:2
in the fifth set. This amazing adventure seems to have
remained in the memory of Swiss tennis enthusiasts: I’m
repeatedly asked about my progress to the final, although
a lot of people think I actually won the tournament.
Als ich nach meinem Rücktritt meinen Schützling Rolf
Hertzog 1986 an das Gstaader Turnier begleitet habe,
habe ich spontan entschieden, mich aus Freude am
Spiel für das noch nicht komplette Qualifikationsturnier
einzuschreiben. Nach Siegen gegen Mezzadri, Srejber,
Smid und Sanchez bin ich im Endspiel auf Stefan Edberg
getroffen, gegen den ich mich im fünften Satz mit 6:2
geschlagen geben musste. Dieses einmalige Abenteuer
scheint dem Schweizer Tennisvolk in Erinnerung
geblieben zu sein: Immer wieder werde ich auf den
Finaleinzug angesprochen; wenn auch viele meinen, ich
hätte das Turnier gewonnen.

ch habe nie ein Geheimnis daraus gemacht, dass
die Wochen auf Rasen nicht das Highlight meiner
Tennissaison waren. Nach Roland Garros konnte ich es
jeweils kaum erwarten, die Rasensaison hinter mich
zu bringen und in Gstaad auf meinen Liebelingsbelag
zurückzukehren. Meine Aufenthalte in Wimbledon waren
meist leider nur von kurzer Dauer, umso mehr freute
ich mich jeweils auf die Reise ins Berner Oberland.
Gstaad war immer mein Lieblingsturnier, ein wahres

Welt. Mein Vater Luis (der auch mein Coach war) teilte
stets meine Begeisterung für Gstaad und begleitete mich
Jahr für Jahr ans Turnier.
have never made a secret of the fact that the grass
court tournaments were not exactly the highlight of the
tennis season for me. Every year, after Roland Garros, I
could hardly wait to get the grass season out of the way
and get back on my favourite playing surface in Gstaad.
My appearances at Wimbledon were mostly short-lived,
which invariably made me look forward even more to
heading to the Bernese Oberland. Gstaad has always
been my favourite tournament, a real picture-perfect
event in a wonderful place. The Tournament Director Köbi
Hermenjat made sure we enjoyed top-class hospitality
and the hotels are up there with the best in the world. My
father Luis (who was also my coach) always shared my
enthusiasm for Gstaad and came to the tournament with
me year after year.
Die Höhenlage und die Bedingungen kamen meinem
Spiel entgegen, da der Belag hier schneller ist und die
Bälle höher abspringen. Für Spieler, die das erste Mal
hier antraten war das jeweils ein Albtraum, für mich als
Habitué hingegen ein grosser Vorteil.
The high altitude and the conditions in Gstaad suited
my game, as the court surface here is quicker and the
balls bounce higher. Players competing here for the first
time usually found it a nightmare, but for a seasoned
participant like me it was a huge advantage.
In Gstaad habe ich dreimal in Folge das Turnier
gewonnen. Ich kann mich noch erinnern, wie Köbi
Hermenjat bei der Siegeszeremonie scherzte, das
Turnier bald in Bruguera Open umzutaufen. Meine
Siegesserie im Berner Oberland bleibt ein Highlight
meiner Karriere. An keinem anderen Ort habe ich so
oft gewonnen wie hier. Ich bin stolz, dass ich dieser
Woche stets so konzentriert auftrat und konstant gute
Leistungen brachte.
I won the tournament in Gstaad three times in
succession. I can still remember Köbi Hermenjat joking
during the prize-giving ceremony that the tournament
would soon have to be renamed the “Bruguera Open”.
That series of victories in the Bernese Oberland
remains the highlight of my career. I have won there
more often than I have anywhere else. I am proud of
the fact that I always played with such focus during this
week-long tournament and produced consistently good
performances.

Richard hat 2006 in Gstaad triumphiert und wer weiss,

1984 With Lugano and Zurich already playing host to wellfunded tennis tournaments exclusively for women and no
prospect of expanding capacity in the Bernese Oberland,
Gstaad decides to scrap its women’s competition from
this year onwards. By this point, women have competed
in Gstaad many times and the women’s contest has been
staged without interruption since 1969. The tournament’s
notable female competitors have included Maria
Esther Bueno and Margaret Smith, both several times
Wimbledon champions. In an effort to offer spectators
more than “just” a men’s tournament, however, an
additional legends’ tournament is organised. Eight
players over the age of 35 – including record champion
Roy Emerson – play singles and doubles matches for a
chance to win 30,000 dollars in prize money.

mehr als „nur“ ein Herrenturnier zu bieten, wird ein
zusätzliches Legends-Turnier organisiert. Acht Spieler
über 35 Jahren – darunter Rekordsieger Roy Emerson
– spielen im Einzel und Doppel um ein Preisgeld von
30’000 Dollar.
1985 The legends’ tournament is dropped, with the
money instead being invested in building an additional
tennis court to the west of the five existing courts. The
new court is to be incorporated into the Swiss Open
tournament in 1986. It is being installed due to the
construction of a fixed 2,000-seater stand on the middle
of the three parallel courts, which gives the tournament
a permanent Centre Court but means that one of the old
courts is lost. 6,000 tickets are already sold in advance
of this year’s tournament, which now has a reliable title
sponsor and is therefore staged under a new name: the
“Rado Swiss Open Gstaad”. The tournament’s first press
conference takes place at the Hotel Schweizerhof in Bern
on 23 April.

popular, a grounds ticket – which allows access to
Courts 1 and 2 but not to the Centre Court – is introduced
in addition to the full tournament ticket. 140 media
representatives are accredited. This year’s competition
springs a surprise as Roland Stadler, a Swiss qualifier
who had in fact already retired from the game, reaches
the final (see page 34).

The ticket office is forced to hang up a “Sold out” sign
once 4,068 numbered tickets have been sold. The trophy
is presented by President of the Swiss Confederation
Pierre Aubert. 150 journalists report from Gstaad. A
window-dressing competition is held in the shop windows
of Gstaad for the first time.

tour, the year marks the last Grand Prix tournament. TV
cameras are now installed directly on the Centre Court
and spectators are able to watch the matches live on 15

ch habe sehr gute Erinnerungen an meine Auftritte
in Gstaad. Ich bin mehr als zehn Jahre als aktiver
Tennisspieler im Berner Oberland angetreten, war aber
auch schon als kleiner Junge dort als Zuschauer. Das
Turnier ist atypisch auf der Tour: Die wunderschöne
Umgebung, die Nähe zum Publikum und die besonderen
Bedingungen, unter denen das Turnier stattfindet, sind
einmalig. Beim ersten Auftritt in Gstaad wohnte ich im
Hotel Arc-en-ciel und bin von dort aus mit dem Fahrrad
zum Stadion gefahren. Das ist sonst nirgends möglich
auf der Tour. Die Leute, die während des Tennisturniers
in Gstaad sind, sind meist auch dort in den Ferien, was
eine einmalige Stimmung schafft, in der ich auch das
eine oder andere schöne Fest feiern durfte.
have very good memories of competing at Gstaad. I
participated over more than ten years as an active tennis
player in the Bernese Oberland but I also spectated as
a young boy. The tournament is atypical for the tour: the
wonderful surroundings, the proximity to the public and
the special conditions in which it takes place make it
a unique experience.The first time I played at Gstaad, I
stayed at the Hotel Arc-en-ciel and cycled from there to
the stadium. You can’t do that anywhere else on the tour.
Most of the people present in Gstaad during the tennis
tournament are there on holiday, which makes for a
special atmosphere in which I too was able to enjoy one
or two delightful celebrations

s war eine aufregende Zeit. In Gstaad erhielt ich
1998 zum allerersten Mal eine Wildcard für ein ATPTurnier. Ich war soeben Junioren-Wimbledon-Sieger
geworden und hatte am Champions-Dinner teilnehmen
dürfen. Eigentlich hätte ich auf Tommy Haas treffen
sollen, doch der war krank. Daher musste ich gegen
Lucas Arnold antreten, was für mich eine Enttäuschung
war. Favorit war ich ohnehin nicht, aber ich hätte gern auf
dem Centre Court gespielt. Die unglaubliche Atmosphäre
auf Platz 1 − die Tribünen waren übervoll − entschädigte
allerdings für das geplatzte Duell mit Haas.
t was an exciting time. I was awarded my first ever wild
card for an ATP tournament in Gstaad in 1998. I had
just become Wimbledon junior champion and had been
allowed to attend the Champions’ Dinner. I should have
played Tommy Haas but he was ill. Instead I was up
against Lucas Arnold, which was a disappointment for
me. Although I wasn’t the favourite, I would have liked to
have played on Centre Court. However, the unbelievable
atmosphere on Court One − the stands were packed –
made up for the cancelled duel with Haas.
My appearances at Gstaad in 2003 and 2004, when I
arrived as Wimbledon champion, were crazy. The media
reported on my daily routine: What’s Roger doing on
Monday? What’s Roger doing on Tuesday? And so on.
Everything seemed to interest them. People even wanted
to know whether I’d eaten croissants or muesli for
breakfast. They were surreal weeks. In Gstaad there are
a lot of fun things to do. I milked a cow, went husky riding
on a glacier and served tennis balls in the mountains.
Things like that are wonderful ways of promoting both
Gstaad and the sport of tennis, and I have always enjoyed
doing them. The pictures of me with the cow Juliette,
which was given to me, went all around the world. It was
an amusing story and eight years later I was still being
asked how the cow was.
Verrückt waren meine Auftritte in Gstaad in den Jahren
2003 und 2004, als ich jeweils als Wimbledon-Champion
anreiste. Die Medien dokumentierten meinen Alltag:
Was macht Roger am Montag? Was macht Roger am
Dienstag? Und so weiter. Alles schien interessant zu sein.
Die Leute wollten sogar wissen, ob ich zum Frühstück
„Gipfeli“ oder „Müesli“ gegessen hatte. Es waren
surreale Wochen. In Gstaad gibt es viele lässige Sachen,
die man unternehmen kann. Ich melkte eine Kuh, ging
mit Huskies auf einen Gletscher, machte in den Bergen
Aufschläge. Solche Dinge sind grossartig, um Gstaad und
den Tennissport zu promoten − und mir haben sie immer
viel Spass bereitet. Die Bilder mit der Kuh Juliette, die ich
geschenkt erhielt, gingen um die Welt. Es war eine lustige
Geschichte; ich wurde noch acht Jahre später gefragt, wie
es der Kuh gehe.
After losing the 2003 final, I was very happy to be able
to win the Swiss Open in 2004 with a victory over Igor
Andreev. It’s important to me to have been champion of
both the Swiss tournaments. This success made it easier
for me to leave the tournament out of my schedule during
the following years. It’s difficult to adjust from grass to
clay and then to hard court; on top of that, I had other
priorities as world number one. But I think the Swiss
public understood my decision.
Nachdem ich 2003 im Final verloren hatte, war ich
sehr glücklich, konnte ich das Swiss Open 2004 durch
einen Sieg über Igor Andrejew doch noch gewinnen.
Es ist mir wichtig, an beiden Schweizer Turnieren den
Titel geholt zu haben. Der Erfolg erleichterte mir in
den darauffolgenden Jahren, das Turnier auszulassen.
Die Umstellung von Rasen auf Sand und dann gleich
wieder auf Hartplatz ist schwierig; zudem hatte ich als
Weltnummer 1 andere Prioritäten. Doch ich denke, das
Schweizer Publikum hat meinen Entscheid verstanden.
However, I was pleased to be able to compete at Gstaad
again in 2013. Unfortunately things didn’t go as I’d hoped.
Daniel Brands played very well in the fast, unfamiliar
conditions. Worse than the defeat itself was the fact that
I had to declare in public afterwards how bad I felt. I
was sorry for the tournament because all the hype was
over after just one match. And then the next day Stan
Wawrinka also retired. So nothing came of the festival of
Swiss tennis in the end − and for me, following my defeat,
a crisis meeting was on the agenda. Nevertheless, the
Gstaad tournament will always occupy a special place in
my heart.
Dennoch war ich froh, konnte ich 2013 wieder einmal
in Gstaad antreten. Leider lief es mir nicht wie erhofft.
Daniel Brands spielte bei den schnellen, ungewohnten
Bedingungen stark. Schlimmer als die Niederlage an
sich war, dass ich danach öffentlich sagen musste,
wie schlecht es mir ging. Es tat mir sehr leid für das
Turnier, weil der ganze Hype nach einem Match schon
vorbei war. Und dann gab am nächsten Tag auch noch
Stan Wawrinka auf. So wurde nichts aus den Schweizer
Festspielen − und für mich stand nach der Niederlage
eine Krisensitzung auf dem Programm. Trotzdem: Das
Gstaader Turnier wird immer einen besonderen Platz in
meinem Herzen haben.

1990 The Gstaad tournament joins the newly established
ATP World Tour Series. This tour, which has been
launched by professional players, reintroduces player
contracts and appearance fees. Eurosport broadcasts the
Swiss Open to 26 countries from the Monday onwards,
with the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG) and
Spanish television also picking up the signal. More
than five million television viewers are therefore given
the chance to watch the tennis action in the Bernese
Oberland. There is plenty going on on site too: up to 90
per cent of the tickets are sold in advance using a new
electronic system, and the tickets for the last four days
are all sold out before the start of the tournament. The
infrastructure is also improved, with wider staircases,
weatherproof flooring under the stands and a wooden
ground covering in the tournament village.
1990 Das Gstaader Turnier steigt in die neu gegründeten

and improvements. Court 1, for example, is upgraded
and provided with a rain cover, new stands and mobile
lighting. As many as 6,000 tickets for the qualifying
weekend are sold in advance. For the first time in twelve
years, some matches are played on the Gstaad Palace
courts to make up for rain delays. Incidentally, these
courts have been made available for training sessions
throughout all the years that the tournament has taken
place. The final is held on the Monday.

2000 Despite having a new sponsor in the form of the
major bank UBS, a good line-up and a successful
exhibition match on the qualifying Sunday, the
tournament struggles to compete. This is partly because
the ATP introduces a new ranking system which
downgrades the status of the Gstaad tournament and
partly because the event is plagued by rain. The finals
have to be postponed to the Monday and the tournament
is forced to dip into its money reserves; a loss of 150,000
Swiss francs is unavoidable.
2000 Trotz neuem Sponsor – der Grossbank UBS –,
guter Besetzung und eines erfolgreichen ExhibitionMatches am Qualifikationssonntag hat das Turnier mit
Schwierigkeiten zu kämpfen: Zum einen wird von der

während des Turniers. Die Finalspiele können erst am
Montag ausgetragen werden. Die Geldreserven müssen
angezapft werden; ein Verlust von 150’000 Schweizer
Franken ist unabwendbar.

falls apart, prompted not least by a loss of 800,000 Swiss
francs. Opinions are divided over the way the tournament
is organised. Responsibility for sponsorship is outsourced
to Grand Chelem Management SA in Morges, meaning
that, for the first time, part of the organisational work is
undertaken by an external professional agency.
2001 Das OK rund um Präsident Hans-Ruedi Schaerer
und Turnierdirektor Köbi Hermenjat bricht – nicht zuletzt
wegen des Defizits von 800’000 Schweizer Franken –
auseinander. Die Meinungen über die Ausrichtung des
Turniers sind gespalten. Das Sponsoring wird an die
Grand Chelem Management SA in Morges ausgelagert,
womit erstmals ein Teil der Organisation von einer
externen, professionellen Agentur übernommen wird.
1993 Bauchef Peter Villiger hat auf Geheiss der ATP
drei neue Sandplätze bei der Tennishalle (neu genannt
Sportzentrum) bauen lassen. Um das Turnier zu
unterstützen, bleiben die Geschäfte in Gstaad während
der Woche eineinhalb Stunden länger geöffnet als üblich.
Rund 400 Helfer sind ehrenamtlich am Turnier tätig. Für
die Tenniswoche könnten mehr Dauerkarten verkauft
werden als erhältlich sind.
1993 Construction manager Peter Villiger arranges for
three new clay courts to be built at the sports centre at
the request of the ATP. To support the tournament, the
shops in Gstaad are kept open for one and a half hours
longer than usual during the tournament week. Around
400 volunteers help out at the tournament. The demand
for tournament tickets for the whole week exceeds the
amount actually available.

2002 Gstaad receives the “Award of Excellence for
Operations” from the ATP. The Centre Court is renamed
the “Roy Emerson Arena” after the tournament’s record
champion from Australia. Operational responsibility
for the tournament is outsourced to a company called
Sports Management Services, which is run by Claudio
Hermenjat, nephew of Köbi Hermenjat. At the same
time, Claudio Hermenjat becomes Deputy Tournament
Director and President Hans-Ruedi Schaerer – along
with a number of other members – steps down from
the Organising Committee before this year’s event
takes place. The new title sponsor Allianz Suisse and an
increased contribution from the Municipality of Saanen,
now amounting to 180,000 Swiss francs, help to ensure
that this year’s tournament goes ahead.
2002 Gstaad erhält von der ATP den „Award of Excellence

Saanen kann die Durchführung des Turniers gesichert

Tournament of the Year” for the second time. Information

1998 Roger Federer erhält für das Turnier in Gstaad als
Junioren-Wimbledonsieger seine erste ATP-Wildcard
überhaupt. Gleichzeitig mit dem Bau des Parkings
Untergstaad werden die drei parallel liegenden DorfPlätze auf einen reduziert und der westlich liegende
Platz wird aufgehoben. Dafür werden auf den neuen
Plätzen beim Sportzentrum Qualifikations- und
Erstrundenspiele ausgetragen. Durch den Bau des
Parkhauses wird der Turniervillage-Boden mit Beton
überzogen; es braucht keine Holzroste mehr auf dem
Rasen. Die Aufenthaltsräume der Spieler sowie die
Garderoben befinden sich von nun an im neu gebauten
Trakt beim Eingang der Einstellhalle. Der Center Court
wird um zwei Meter verlängert, die Banden werden in
blauer – und nicht mehr in grüner – Farbe gehalten.
Der Qualifikationssonntag ist – dank dem ExhibitionDoppel zwischen Marcelo Rios und Gustavo Kuerten
sowie Yannick Noah und Marc Rosset – zum 1. Mal in
der Geschichte ausverkauft. Bis 2006 finden stets solche
Show-Matches statt.
1998 Newly crowned junior Wimbledon champion Roger
Federer is awarded his very first ATP wild card for the
Gstaad tournament. The Untergstaad car park is built,
while the three parallel tennis courts in the village
are reduced to a single court and the one to the west
is dispensed with. The qualification and first round
matches are therefore played on the new courts at the
sports centre. The ground in the tournament village is
covered in concrete as a result of the construction of the
car park, so there is no longer any need to lay wooden
decking on the grass. The players’ recreational facilities
and the cloakrooms are moved to a newly built wing by
the entrance to the underground car park. The Centre
Court is extended by two metres and the perimeter
boards are now painted blue rather than green. Thanks
to an exhibition doubles match pitting Marcelo Rios and
Gustavo Kuerten against Yannick Noah and Marc Rosset,
the Sunday qualification round is sold out for the first
time in the tournament’s history. Exhibition matches are
subsequently played every year until 2006.

2006 The Municipality of Saanen and Swiss Tennis
acquire equal rights to the Gstaad tournament. They set
up Swiss Open Gstaad AG and appoint an Advisory Board,
which is presided over by Adolf Ogi, former President
of the Swiss Confederation and UN Special Adviser on
Sport. Grand Chelem Event SA is tasked with managing
the operations of the tennis tournament in Gstaad. After
a trial year, the event organisation company is given
responsibility for managing the tournament from 2007
until further notice.
2006 Die Gemeinde Saanen und Swiss Tennis erwerben

ch habe gute und schlechte Erinnerungen an das
Turnier in Gstaad: Einerseits war es ein wunderschönes,
sehr gut organisiertes und wichtiges Turnier für uns
Schweizer, andererseits stand ich zweimal im Finale und
konnte den Pokal leider nicht gewinnen. Die Umstellung
nach Wimbledon auf Sand – und dann noch auf dieser
Höhe – war anspruchsvoll und man brauchte viel Geduld.

Meine Mutter begleitete mich jeweils an das Gstaader
Turnier und ich habe die Woche mit ihr sehr genossen.
Es war angenehm, zu Fuss vom grossartigen Hotel zum
Stadion spazieren zu können, man ass fein und es war
schön, vor dieser einmaligen Bergkulisse zu spielen.
Nach meiner Karriere fuhr ich zweimal mit dem Fahrrad
von Blonay ans Turnier und am Abend wieder zurück.
Das war hart.

My mother always came with me to Gstaad and I really
enjoyed spending the week with her. It was nice to be
able to walk from the magnificent hotel to the stadium,
the food was superb and it was wonderful to play in front
of this unique mountain scenery. Twice, since retiring, I
have cycled from Blonay to watch the tournament and
back again in the evening.
That was hard work.

GRAND SLAM CHAMPION
Das erste Mal habe ich Gstaad als Zuschauer besucht,
ich war damals noch ein Kind und besuchte das Turnier
als Fan. Wenn ich mich richtig erinnere, war das 1998,
an einem tollen Sommertag spielten Alex Corretja und
Albert Costa. Es wimmelte nur so von Spaniern und ich
war begeistert.
The first time I visited Gstaad was as a spectator when I
was just a child, coming to the tournament as a fan. If I
remember rightly it was in 1998 and I saw Alex Corretja
play Albert Costa on a beautiful summer’s day. The place
was teeming with Spaniards and I was so excited.
In 2005, the second time I took part in the Gstaad
tournament, I came up against Gaston Gaudio in my
first ever ATP final. It was fantastic. I had already come
back from three match points down against Fernando
Verdasco in the second round. I can still remember the
day of the final well. Gaudio had won at Roland Garros
the year before and was one of the best clay court players
around at the time. Since the weather forecast was poor,
the decision was taken to reduce the final to the best
of three sets (back then the finals were still decided
by the best of five sets). I played well, but I still lost.
Nevertheless, it was an amazing week for me.
2005 habe ich bei meiner zweiten Teilnahme in Gstaad
meinen ersten ATP-Final gegen Gaston Gaudio
bestritten. Es war fantastisch, ich hatte in der zweiten
Runde gegen Fernando Verdasco drei Matchbälle
abgewehrt. Ich kann mich noch gut an den Finaltag
erinnern. Gaudio hatte ein Jahr zuvor Roland Garros
gewonnen und war einer der besten Sandplatzspieler
des Moments. Weil die Wetterprognose schlecht war,
entschied man sich den Final nur über zwei Gewinnsätze
auszutragen (damals galt für Endspiele noch das bestof-five Format). Ich habe gut gespielt, aber trotzdem
verloren. Gleichwohl war es eine fabelhafte Woche für
mich.
I was still quite young, the spectators and the media were
only just starting to get to know me, and I learned a lot. I
found all the media hype pretty overwhelming at the time.
I had just begun to establish myself in the top 100 and
still wasn’t used to that kind of media interest at all.
Ich war noch ziemlich jung, die Zuschauer und die
Presse fingen erst an, mich kennenzulernen und ich
lernte viel dazu. Der ganze Presserummel war damals
ziemlich beeindruckend für mich, ich hatte gerade erst
begonnen, mich in den Top 100 zu etablieren und war ein
solches Medieninteresse noch überhaupt nicht gewohnt.
Gstaad is a wonderful tournament in a magical
setting. Unfortunately the weather plays tricks with the
organisers from time to time, but when the weather
gods play ball the scenery is beautiful – the players and
spectators all agree on that. The fantastic Centre Court is
right in the middle of the village, the atmosphere is great
and there is an incredible vibe when the Swiss are playing
well. There are so many things to do here, there’s a really
nice sense of peace and quiet and we are lucky enough
to get to stay in excellent hotels. Being from the canton
of Vaud, I also appreciate how close this place is to my
home. I sometimes come to Gstaad during the winter too
and do some of my pre-season preparations here with
my fitness coach Pierre Paganini.
Gstaad ist ein wunderbares Turnier in einer zauberhaften
Umgebung. Leider spielt das Wetter den Organisatoren
hin und wieder einen Streich, aber wenn Petrus mitspielt,
ist die Landschaft wunderschön, da sind sich Spieler und
Zuschauer einig. Der schöne Center Court liegt in der
Dorfmitte, das Ambiente ist toll und wenn die Schweizer
gut spielen ist die Stimmung unglaublich. Man kann hier
so vieles unternehmen, die Ruhe ist sehr angenehm
und wir haben das Glück, in hervorragenden Hotels zu
logieren. Als Waadtländer schätze ich zudem die Nähe
zu meiner Heimat. Ich komme manchmal auch im
Winter nach Gstaad und absolviere hier zusammen mit
meinen Fitnesstrainer Pierre Paganini einen Teil meiner
Saisonvorbereitung.
My best experience in Gstaad was reaching the doubles
final in 2004 with Marc Rosset. I was really pleased about
this success – and even more delighted that I could share
it with Marc and had the chance to play with him. I had
not played very well in the singles competition that year,
so it was all the more gratifying to put in such a good
performance in the doubles.
Mein schönstes Erlebnis in Gstaad war das Erreichen des
Doppelfinals 2004 zusammen mit Marc Rosset. Ich habe
mich wahnsinnig über diesen Erfolg gefreut und noch
mehr darüber, dass ich ihn mit Marc teilen konnte und
mit ihm spielen durfte. Ich hatte in diesem Jahr im Einzel
nicht sehr gut gespielt und deshalb war es umso schöner
im Doppel so stark aufzutreten.

mit Benzin getrocknet wird, an dem Julie Andrews
den Pokal übergibt und an dem vermeintlich indoor
gespielt wird. Ein Ort, wo eine diplomatische Affäre auf
eine besondere Art gelöst wird, mitten im Sommer eine
Schneeballschlacht stattfindet oder US-Präsident Jimmy
Carter entspannt einen Tennismatch mitverfolgt.
Das ist Gstaad.
A tournament which has seen one of its tennis courts
dried with petrol and Julie Andrews present a trophy
and which was supposed to be an indoor event. A place
where a diplomatic affair was solved in an unusual way,
where a snowball fight occurred in the middle of summer
and where US President Jimmy Carter relaxed whilst
watching a tennis match. That’s Gstaad for you.

Der tschechoslowakische Tennisspieler Jaroslav Drobny,
der wie sein Landsmann Vladimir Cernik dank einer
Sondergenehmigung an internationalen Wettkämpfen
– und damit auch in Gstaad – antreten darf, trifft in
der dritten Runde auf den Spanier Pedro Masip und
damit auf einen Vertreter des Franco-Regimes, ergo
eines politischen Gegners der Tschechoslowakei. Diese
Begegnung versuchen zwei tschechoslowakische
Gesandte von der Botschaft in Bern zu verhindern, indem
sie ihre beiden in Gstaad spielenden Athleten frühzeitig
nach Prag zurückbringen wollen. Hauptgrund ist wohl
aber die Angst vor der Flucht der beiden nach Amerika.
Doch Drobny weigert sich und erhält Rückendeckung von
Turnierdirektor Lorenz Cadonau, Kurdirektor Paul Loosli

Czechoslovakian tennis player Jaroslav Drobny,
who, like his fellow countryman Vladimir Cernik, is
allowed to compete in international competitions after
receiving special authorisation, takes part in the Gstaad
tournament. In the third round he meets Spaniard
Pedro Masip, a representative of the Franco regime, and
therefore a political opponent of Czechoslovakia. Two
Czechoslovakian envoys from the Embassy in Bern try
to prevent this encounter and want to bring both their
participating athletes back to Prague early. The main
reason for this, however, is probably the fear that they will
both escape to America. But Drobny refuses and receives

that Neil Armstrong becomes the first man to land on the

Drobny and Cernik (photo) release a
statement the next morning saying
that, as sportsmen, they do not want
to get involved in politics and that they
have decided to remain in the Gstaad
tournament: “No one can stop us from
pursuing our passion for sport.” Later
on, Drobny – who went on to win the
French Open and Wimbledon as well as
the tournament in Gstaad – becomes
a player coach for Gstaad’s National League B hockey
team. Future Tournament Director Köbi Hermenjat, who
would also play in this hockey team, takes part in the
tournament as a ball boy this year.

In Gstaad findet ein „Legends’ Match“ zwischen Formel1-Fahrer James Hunt und Skirennfahrer René Berthod
statt.
Der australischer Tennisspieler Neale Fraser liebt es
zu pokern. Nach einer verlorenen Partie bittet er den
Tennisfan und Student Niki Rommel, ihm 50 Schweizer
Franken zu leihen. Dieser geht zu seiner Grossmutter
und erbettelt bei ihr das Geld. Als Dankeschön erhält
Rommel ein Turnier-Racket von Fraser.

Die Berner Zwillinge Rolf und Fredi Steiger werden
als Juniorenschweizermeister im Doppel ans Turnier

mitzuverfolgen. Später helfen sie am Turnier als
Schiedsrichter und spielen im Einzel mit. Dr. Rolf Steiger
engagiert sich später als offizieller Turnierarzt.

They make the journey from Bern to Gstaad by bike to
come and watch the matches. Later on, they help out at
the tournament as umpires, as well as playing in singles
matches. Dr Rolf Steiger later takes on the role of official
tournament doctor.
Gstaad Palace owner Ernst Scherz senior watches the
matches on the Centre Court with actress Liz Taylor from
the covered stand. To get to their seats, they both have to
climb over a barrier, which the film star proceeds to do
with great elegance.

Zum ersten Mal kann das Tennisturnier auf einen
Hauptsponsoren zählen: „Keller und Partner“, eine
Schweizer Leasingfirma, zahlt das Spielersalär, das
Preisgeld, veranstaltet Feste, lässt ein Banner an die
Eisenbahnbrücke anbringen und ein grosses Feuerwerk
zünden. Doch der Check, den Kassier Ernst Rieder nach
dem Turnier in den Händen hält, ist ungedeckt. Mit
kühlem Kopf macht er der Sekretärin der Firma klar,
dass, wenn nicht bis zur OK-Sitzung am selben Tag um 16
Uhr die schriftliche Bankbestätigung in Gstaad eintreffe,
die Öffentlichkeit, die Politik und die Medien vom Betrug
des Herrn Keller erfahren würden. Eine Stunde vor der
Sitzung erhält der umtriebige Kassier die zertifizierte
Textmeldung der Bank, dass der Check gedeckt sei. Die
Bemühungen des Leasing-Chefs, nicht aufzufliegen, sind
jedoch erfolglos: Herr Keller wird zwei Wochen später –
wegen diversen Vergehen – verhaftet und wegen Betrugs
verurteilt.
For the first time, the tennis tournament has a main
sponsor. “Keller und Partner”, a Swiss leasing company,
pays the players’ salaries, provides the prize money,
organises social events, installs a banner on the railway
bridge and puts on a large fireworks display. But the
cheque that treasurer Ernst Rieder receives after the
tournament bounces. Keeping a cool head, he makes
it clear to the company secretary that, if the written
confirmation from the bank does not arrive in Gstaad in
time for the Organising Committee meeting at 4 p.m.
the same day, the public, politicians and the media
would hear about Mr Keller’s fraudulent activities. An
hour before the meeting, the shrewd treasurer receives
a certified text message from the bank confirming
that the cheque has been accepted. The efforts by the
director of the leasing company to avoid being caught are
unsuccessful, however: Mr Keller is arrested two weeks
later for a range of offences and convicted of fraud.

Das Tennisturnier gibt den Anstoss zur Gründung
der Gstaader Verkehrskadetten. Mit der Zunahme
an Zuschauern in den 90er-Jahren steigt das
Verkehrsaufkommen derart, dass für die Zuweisung
der Parkplätze und die Verkehrsregelung Kadetten
aus Bern eingesetzt werden. Um Kosten zu sparen,
gründen Urs Wittwer, damaliger Verkehrschef des
Tennisturniers und Rudolf Baumer, damaliger Präsident
der Verkehrskommission der Gemeinde Saanen, den
Verein „Verkehrskadetten Saanenland“. Seine Mitglieder
sind seither bei vielen Grossanlässen in der Region im
Einsatz.
The tennis tournament leads to the establishment
of Gstaad’s traffic cadets. With the rise in spectator
numbers during the 1990s, the amount of traffic
increases to such an extent that cadets from Bern are
deployed to allocate parking spaces and control traffic.
To save costs, Urs Wittwer, then Head of Transport for the
tennis tournament, and Rudolf Baumer, then President
of the Municipality of Saanen’s Transport Commission,
found the “Saanenland Traffic Cadets” association. Its
members have since been involved in many major events
in the region.

Mit dem Turnier wuchs auch das Medieninteresse. Bis zu
150 Journalistinnen und Journalisten berichteten jeweils
in all den Jahren aus Gstaad. Von „harten Köpfen“,
„konsequenter Politik“ oder „Ehepaardoppel“ wurde
berichtet.

topics such as “stubbornness”, “a consistent policy” and

the Alps has been hosting a major international event for
100 years, in spite of the global competition and all the
difficulties it has faced. The organisers – who for a long
time were all amateurs – have poured their heart and

Tennis ist eine Sportart, die Gäste ins Hotel bringen
kann. Das wussten die Direktoren des „Royal Hotel
Winter & Gstaad Palace“, das seit der Eröffnung 1913
über drei Tennisplätze verfügt, schon früh. Dass sie
mit der Anregung, doch auch im Dorf Tennisplätze zu
errichten, an das gesamte Gstaad, gar das Saanenland
dachten, war weitsichtig und uneigennützig; fanden
doch die späteren, weltweit beliebten
Turniere überwiegend im Dorf statt.
Ebenso grosszügig ist die Tatsache, dass
die Spieler lange die Gastfreundschaft
des Palace gratis, später zu einem
Spezialpreis, geniessen durften. Man
engagiere sich eben dort, wo es für
Gstaad gut sei und das Tennisturnier sei
eine Notwendigkeit für Gstaad, war und
ist die Palace-Crew überzeugt.
Tennis is a sport that can attract guests to a hotel. This is
something that the directors of the “Royal Hotel, Winter
& Gstaad Palace”, which has boasted three tennis courts
ever since it opened in 1913, recognised at an early stage.
They also made the foresighted and unselfish suggestion
of establishing more tennis courts in the village, showing
that they did not just have the hotel in mind; they were
thinking of Gstaad as a whole, and even
the entire Saanenland region. As it
happened, the world-famous tournaments
held later on took place primarily in the
village. The hotel management showed
equal generosity in allowing the players
to enjoy its hospitality free of charge at
first, and then later at a special rate. The
Gstaad Palace team has always believed
in the importance of getting involved in
anything that benefits Gstaad, and that the
tennis tournament is vital for the village.

Schaerer in das Tennis-OK. Ernst Scherz jun. trat 1968 in
die Fussstapfen seines Vaters: Er übernahm gleichzeitig
mit der Leitung des Hotels sowohl die subtile Arbeit im
Hintergrund des Tennisturniers wie auch die Ausrichtung
der legendären Tennisabende, an denen Spielerinnen,
Spieler und Organisatoren vor geladenen Gästen bis in
die 90er-Jahre einmalige Darbietungen präsentierten.
2001 übernahm Andrea Scherz die Leitung des Palace
und unterstützt das Tennisturnier heute als Supporter.

After the Second World War, the hotel’s
then owner Ernst Scherz senior,
grandfather of the current director Andrea
Scherz, helped save the tournament
from closing down altogether – including
by providing financial support – and offered the
tournament’s Organising Committee the services of
his director Hans-Ruedi Schaerer. Ernst Scherz junior
followed in his father’s footsteps in 1968, when he took
over not only the management of the hotel, but also the
subtle string-pulling behind the scenes of the tennis
tournament and the organisation of the legendary gala
evenings, at which players and organisers used to
entertain guests with one-off performances up until the
1990s. Andrea Scherz inherited overall responsibility for
the Gstaad Palace Hotel in 2001.

Although he was not a tennis player himself, Lorenz
Cadonau nevertheless put his heart and soul into
supporting the international tournament. Having moved
to Gstaad to work at the Park Hotel, he fell in love with
Hulda von Siebenthal, the sister-in-law of former tennis
referee Ferdi Hermenjat, whose son Köbi Hermenjat
would later go on to become Tournament Director. Lorenz
Cadonau and his wife opened the Papeterie Cadonau
stationery shop, which still exists today, on Gstaad’s
promenade, and it was here that many schedules of play
were produced. In 1940 he
took over the presidency of
LTC Gstaad and thus got
involved in managing the
tournament events.
Er spielte selbst nicht Tennis. Dennoch engagierte sich
Lorenz Cadonau mit Leib und Seele für das internationale
Turnier. Nach Gstaad gezogen um im Park Hotel zu
arbeiten, verliebte er sich in Hulda von Siebenthal,
Schwägerin des einstigen Spielleiters Ferdi Hermenjat,
seinerseits Vater des späteren Turnierdirektors Köbi
Hermenjat. Lorenz Cadonau eröffnete mit seiner Frau
die noch heute bestehende Papeterie Cadonau in der
Promenade von Gstaad, in der so mancher Spielplan
angefertigt wurde. 1940 übernahm er das Präsidium
des LTC Gstaad und stieg
damit in die Leitung des
Turniergeschehens ein.
Nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg
setzte er sich zum Ziel, aus
dem Turnier in Gstaad das
Wimbledon der Schweiz zu
machen. Dafür engagierte
er sich mit Herzblut, reiste
an die Turniere von Paris
und London – wo er oft
mit neuen Ideen wie einer
Zähltafel nach Hause kam
–, stand in stetem Kontakt
mit den Spielerinnen und
Spielern und investierte
oftmals auch sein eigenes
Geld in das Turnier. Seine
Frau und seine Tochter
Monique unterstützten ihn
stets wo sie konnten. Lorenz
Cadonau wurde für seine Mühen belohnt: Das Turnier in
Gstaad entwickelte sich zum internationalen Grossanlass
mit Spitzenbesetzung und treuem Publikum. 1956 starb
der umgängliche und ideenreiche Kaufmann. Ihm hat das
Tennisturnier in Gstaad zum grossen Teil den Aufstieg in
die Weltelite zu verdanken.

died in 1956 and it is largely to him that the Gstaad
tournament owes its rise to the global elite.

Following the unexpected death of Lorenz Cadonau in
1956, Gstaad-born notary Fred von Grünigen picked up
from where Cadonau had left off with the same panache
and organisational flair. “Cooperation based on trust”
was the motto by which he successfully developed the
tennis tournament to a high standard. He cultivated
useful contacts with the local population, the authorities
and the players, often travelling to other tournaments –
later in the company of Hans-Ruedi Schaerer and Köbi
Hermenjat – to see the latter. During the 30 years in
which he was involved in
the Gstaad tournament,
he devoted himself almost
entirely to it, working
tirelessly to make sure the
event was a success.

und organisatorischen Flair in die Fussstapfen
des überraschend verstorbenen Lorenz Cadonau.
„Zusammenarbeit auf Vertrauensbasis“ war das
Motto von Fred von Grünigen, anhand dessen er das

Er pflegte wertvolle Kontakte zu der Bevölkerung,
den Behörden und den Spielerinnen und Spielern. Für
letzteres reiste er oft – später auch gemeinsam mit
Hans-Ruedi Schaerer und Köbi Hermenjat – an andere
Turniere. In den 30 Jahren,
in denen er für das Gstaader
Turnier tätig war, gab es
für ihn kaum ein anderes
Thema: Mit Herzblut setzte
er sich für das Gelingen des
Anlasses ein.
As well as welcoming
players, sponsors,
journalists and guests to
the tournament, Fred von
Grünigen often invited
them to his own home
for cocktails. He even
occasionally showcased
his singing talent during
the tennis gala evenings at
the Gstaad Palace. He kept
a list of weak points and
was constantly searching
for the best solutions to
improve the event year
after year. It is largely down to him that the tournament
has been able to maintain its high standard and topclass field of players and retain its quaint charm. His
wife Annegret provided active assistance and handed
over the trophy to the tournament winners at the
presentation ceremony, while his son Urs was involved
in the tournament in various capacities. In 1987, Fred von
Grünigen relinquished his post as President to HansRuedi Schaerer, although he remained a loyal supporter
of the tournament right up to his death in 1991.

grossen Teil sein Verdienst. Seine Frau Annegret half
jeweils tatkräftig mit und übergab bei der Siegerehrung
den Pokal. Sohn Urs war in verschiedenen Funktionen
am Turnier tätig. 1987 übergab Fred von Grünigen das
Präsidentenamt an Hans-Ruedi Schaerer, blieb dem
Turnier aber bis zu seinem Tod 1991 treu.

Back in 1952, when he took up a trainee position at
the Gstaad Palace Hotel – where he would eventually
work his way up to the post of director in 1970 – HansRuedi Schaerer knew next to nothing about the sport of
tennis. Nevertheless, he played a key role in the Gstaad
tournament’s story of success. Ernst Scherz senior,
the owner of the Gstaad Palace, delegated him to the
tennis tournament’s Organising Committee to provide
support. He served as Secretary and Vice President of
the committee from 1966 to 1987 before eventually taking
over the presidency. During
this time, he familiarised
himself with the world of
tennis by visiting other
tournaments and holding
daily discussions with the
Gstaad Palace’s tennis
coach and Organising
Committee member Köbi
Hermenjat, and even took
up the sport himself as a
hobby later on.
Obwohl ihm der Tennissport bei seinem Stellenantritt
im Palace 1952 als Stagiaire – 1970 stieg er dann zum
Direktor auf – völlig unbekannt war, wurde Hans-Ruedi
Schaerer zu einer tragenden Persönlichkeit in der
erfolgreichen Turniergeschichte. Von Palace-Besitzer
Ernst Scherz sen. zur Unterstützung ins Tennis-OK
delegiert, amtete er von 1966 bis 1987 als Sekretär und
Vizepräsident, bevor er das Präsidium übernahm. In
dieser Zeit lernte er bei Besuchen von anderen Turnieren
und in täglichen Gesprächen mit Palace-Tennislehrer
und OK-Mitglied Köbi
Hermenjat den Tennissport
kennen, dem er später
selbst frönte.

und dezidierter
Zurückhaltung leitete er
die Turniergeschäfte, die
ihm immer mehr ans Herz
wuchsen. Probleme waren
für ihn stets Aufgaben,
die es zu lösen galt. Denn,
wie er in den Medien
zitiert wurde: „Ich kann
mir Gstaad ohne das
Tennisturnier schlicht nicht
vorstellen.“ Während seiner
Tätigkeit an der OK-Spitze
wurde der Tennissport
immer professioneller,
wobei mit Ausflügen und
Abendunterhaltungen die „menschliche“ Seite in Gstaad
weiter aufrecht erhalten wurde. Seine Frau Brigitte
und die Kinder Philippe und Michaela „Kuki“ hielten
sich derweil grösstenteils aus dem Tennisgeschäft
heraus. 2002 zog sich Hans-Ruedi Schaerer aus dem
Präsidentenamt zurück. 2006 verstarb der umsichtige
Tennis-Stratege.

the tennis tournament.” During his presidency of the

and more professional and the “human” side of it had to
be continuously sustained by organising trips and evening
entertainment. His wife Brigitte and children Philippe and
Michaela “Kuki” rarely got involved in the tennis business
during this time. Hans-Ruedi Schaerer, a shrewd tennis
strategist, stepped down from his post as President in
2002 and died in 2006.

Gstaad: Erst amtete er als Linien- und Schiedsrichter,
spielte selbst mit – was ihm im Amateurismus nach
dem Erwerb des Tennislehrerdiploms und dem damit
verbundenen Status eines Professionellen verwehrt
wurde –, dann engagierte er sich in verschiedenen
Tätigkeiten bis er schliesslich 1968 das Amt des
Turnierdirektors übernahm.
Mit Fred von Grünigen und
Hans-Ruedi Schaerer reiste
er an bis zu 20 ausländische
Turniere jährlich, um
Spielerinnen und Spieler
zu verpflichten und sich
über Neuerungen zu
informieren. 1977 wurde er
in die „Association of Tennis
Tournament in Europe“
berufen. 1983 wurde er
gar Mitglied und Vertreter
der europäischen Grand
Prix Turniere im „Men’s
International Professional
Tennis Council“.
Born a stone’s throw from the tournament site in Gstaad,
Köbi Hermenjat took his first steps on the tennis courts
and took part in the tournament for the first time in 1946
as an 11-year-old ball boy. From then on, Jacques “Köbi”
Hermenjat lived for the sport of tennis and the Gstaad
tournament. He started out as a line judge and umpire
and even played the game himself – although he was
precluded from amateur competitions after acquiring a
tennis coaching diploma and thus obtaining professional
status – before going on to engage in various activities
until he eventually became Tournament Director in
1968. Along with Fred von
Grünigen and Hans-Ruedi
Schaerer, he travelled to up
to 20 tournaments abroad
each year to enlist players
for the Gstaad tournament
and to keep up with the
latest developments in the
sport. He was appointed to
the Association of Tennis
Tournaments in Europe
in 1977 and even joined
the Men’s International
Professional Tennis Council
in 1983, on which he
represented the European
Grand Prix tournaments.

Turnierdirektor. 2006 verkaufte er die Turnierrechte
an die Gemeinde Saanen und Swiss Tennis. Noch
heute besucht und verfolgt Köbi Hermenjat, der am 12.
März 2015 seinen 80sten Geburtstag feiern darf, alle
internationalen Turniere weltweit.

Known as “Mister Tennis”, Köbi Hermenjat – together
with the Organising Committee – always endeavoured
to make the tennis players’ visits to Gstaad a special
experience, which often helped him to attract some of
the world’s top players to the tournament. 2005 was his
last year as Tournament Director and in 2006 he sold the
rights to the tournament to the Municipality of Saanen
and Swiss Tennis. Despite approaching his 80th birthday
(on 12 March 2015), Köbi Hermenjat still attends and
follows international tennis tournaments all over the
world.

Seit mehr als 40 Jahren sind die Supporter eine
wertvolle Stütze des Gstaader Tennisturniers. Geeint im
Supporters’ Club, einer Gemeinschaft Gleichgesinnter
mit sportlichen und gesellschaftlichen Akzenten, aber
ohne Statuten oder Vorstand, unterstützten bereits 1973
deren 29 Mitglieder den internationalen Sportanlass
finanziell. Beim 10-jährigen Bestehen zählte der Club
bereits über 120 Interessierte, in den 90er Jahren wuchs
die Supporterfamilie auf über 200 Mitglieder an. Einige
der aktuell 126 Supporter sind bereits seit 20, 30, 40
Jahren oder sogar von Anfang an im Club mit dabei.
Fans have been an essential pillar of support for the
Gstaad tennis tournament for more than 40 years. They
are united under the umbrella of the Supporters’ Club,
a community of like-minded people with a focus on
sporting and social pursuits but without any statutes
or management board. The Supporters’ Club has been
providing financial support for the international sporting
event ever since 1973, when it had just 29 members. By
the time it was ten years old, the Club’s membership
roster numbered over 120, a figure which grew to more
than 200 in the 1990s. Some of the 126 current members

Behind every successful President of the Organising
Committee and Tournament Director is an extensive
team of capable helpers. Whether they are members of
the Organising Committee itself, tournament employees
or one of up to 400 volunteers, each year they help to
ensure that the event in Gstaad lives up to its reputation
as an exceptionally well-organised, enjoyable and
intimate tournament. Every one of them deserves a
heartfelt thank you. Listed below are five long-serving

The supporters, who dedicate themselves to the
tournament out of a love of sport and out of loyalty to the
Alpine village of Gstaad, contribute towards the innovative
organisation of this major tennis event, as well as helping
to secure its continued existence and maintain its high
standards. “As supporters, they offer substantial support
for one of the most important events in Gstaad,” says
President of the Supporters’ Club Marcel Bach. Their
financial contribution – which started out at 1,000 Swiss
francs per year and has now risen to 2,500 – provides the
organisers with vital funds to help them start planning
the next tournament. In return, the supporters receive
two tournament tickets each for seats in the covered
stand and invitations to various events.

Peter Villiger war als 13-jähriger Ballboy erstmals
am Tennisturnier mit dabei, später amtete er als
Linienrichter und Platzanweiser, bevor er als Bauchef von
1983 bis 2001 im OK einsass. Während diesen Jahren hat
der Gstaader stets dafür gesorgt, dass die Infrastruktur
modern, funktionell und gemütlich war. Nach einer
Pause ist der Tennisfan als Berater der Grand Chelem
Event SA heute wieder für das Turnier tätig.
Peter Villiger, a keen tennis fan from Gstaad, first got
involved in the tennis tournament as a 13-year-old ball
boy and later worked as a line judge and usher before
serving on the Organising Committee as a construction
manager from 1983 to 2001. During this time, he ensured
that the infrastructure was always up-to-date, in good
working order and convenient to use. After taking a
break, he is now involved in the tournament again as an
advisor to Grand Chelem Event SA.
Kurt Zimmermann und Hans Seiling, die Spielleiter von
1960 bis 1994, beziehungsweise 1960 bis 1988, waren für
die Schiedsrichter, Ballboys, die Spielauslosung oder
auch für die Tagesprogramme – die zum Teil bis zu 29
Spiele am Tag beinhalteten – zuständig.
Kurt Zimmermann and Hans Seiling, who served
as referees from 1960 to 1994 and from 1960 to 1988
respectively, were responsible for the umpires, ball
boys, the draw and the daily schedules of play – which
sometimes included up to 29 matches a day.
Hanspeter Walker, von 1964 bis 2014 als Sanitäter
tätig, hat die Entwicklung des Turniers miterlebt. In
all den Jahren hat er viele kleine Verletzungen – wie
beispielsweise eine Schramme am Knie von Veloprofi
Ferdi Kübler nach einem Sturz auf der Treppe –
behandelt.
Hanspeter Walker worked as a paramedic from 1964 to
2014 and witnessed the tournament’s development. He
treated various minor injuries over the years, including
a cut suffered by professional cyclist Ferdi Kübler from
falling down the stairs.
Peter Brand, der Schlägerbespanner von 1978 bis
2011 hat während dem Turnier zeitweise drei Rackets
pro Stunde bespannt und mit zwei Kollegen in einer
Turnierwoche in Akkordarbeit über 400 Rackets neu
besaitet.
Peter Brand, who served as a racket stringer from 1978
to 2011, sometimes had to string three rackets per hour
during the tournament. He and two colleagues would
restring over 400 rackets during a tournament week, for
which they were paid by the piece.
Hansruedi Steffen ist seit 1988 für Aufbau, Abbau,
Lagerung und Unterhalt des turniereigenen Materials
verantwortlich.

Im Saanenland steht ein grosses Ereignis an: Das
internationale Tennisturnier in Gstaad feiert im Sommer
2015 seinen 100sten Geburtstag. Ich gratuliere den
Verantwortlichen herzlich zu diesem Jubiläum!
The Saanenland is gearing up for a big occasion as
the international tennis tournament in Gstaad is set
to celebrate its 100th anniversary in summer 2015. I
would like to congratulate all those responsible for the
tournament on reaching this milestone.
Als ältester Grossanlass in unserer Region hat
das internationale Tennisturnier in Gstaad eine
herausragende Bedeutung für die touristische
Entwicklung des Saanenlandes und insbesondere der
Gemeinde Saanen. Das Turnier generiert heute – wie
auch früher schon – einen Jahresumsatz von etlichen
Millionen Schweizer Franken, wovon ein Grossteil als
Wertschöpfung im Saanenland bleibt. Für die Gemeinde
Saanen war dies Grund genug, zusammen mit Swiss
Tennis im Jahr 2006 die Turnierrechte zu erwerben um
den Fortbestand des Turniers zu sichern. Heute steht das
Turnier auf gesunden Beinen und erfreut sich nach wie
vor grosser Beliebtheit.
As the oldest major event in our area, the international
tennis tournament in Gstaad is exceptionally important
for the development of tourism in the Saanenland
region, and for the Municipality of Saanen in particular.
Nowadays, as it has in the past, the tournament
generates annual sales of several million Swiss
francs, a large proportion of which is reinvested in the
Saanenland region. For the Municipality of Saanen, this
was reason enough to purchase the tournament rights
in collaboration with Swiss Tennis in 2006 to ensure the
tournament’s survival. Today, the event is thriving and
remains incredibly popular.

dem Ausland in der einmalig schönen Umgebung von

My heartfelt thanks go to everyone who has been involved
in the tennis tournament in Gstaad over the past 100
years. For Swiss Open Gstaad AG, Grand Chelem Event
SA, the spectators and all the volunteer helpers, I hope
that the centenary edition of the Swiss Open in 2015 will
prove to be an unforgettable highlight in the tournament’s

This brings me from the economic to the social aspects
of the tournament and the second
important factor for Saanen: the
guests who travel to the Saanenland
to watch the tennis and who come to
know and love this region. Meanwhile,
the commitment of the vast number
of helpers, who range from ball boys
to those holding managerial positions,
has developed into a lasting bond
between them and the tournament
and an indirect attachment to our
region. In this way, they have become
ambassadors of the Saanenland.
I hope that the dedication shown by
the people in charge and the organisers will ensure that
the event continues to develop positively in the future, in
an ATP tennis circuit environment that is becoming ever
more competitive. I would like to take this opportunity
to extend my heartfelt thanks to all former, current and
future helpers for their commitment; this tournament
could not happen without them.

the organisers of the Crédit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad
aim to send out to the world whenever the world elite
of men’s tennis gather to transform Gstaad into the
“Wimbledon of the Alps”. The event gives spectators
and participants alike an opportunity to enjoy toplevel sporting prowess against a unique and authentic
mountain backdrop.
In der Schweiz gibt es wenige Turniere, die es bereits
seit 100 Jahren gibt – noch dazu erfolgreich. Der
Schweizerische Tennisverband Swiss Tennis ist

Very few tournaments in Switzerland can claim to have
been going for 100 years – and with great success too.
The Swiss tennis association Swiss Tennis is proud to be
involved in two such events. While the Interclub national
tennis team championships – which date back to 1911 –
inspire more than 30,000 people each year to pick up a
tennis racket and have a go, just as many people make
the annual pilgrimage to Gstaad each summer to witness
the sport at its very best.
Although the Crédit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad is one
of the smaller tennis events, thanks to its unique charm
– part Alpine village, part international sophistication
– Gstaad stands out as an almost exotic element in the
round of ATP tournaments. It offers
not only spectators but players too an
outstanding supporting programme
with excursions to the glacier, cheese
grotto or oversized fondue pot or a
whey bath on an Alpine meadow. It
is not for nothing that players have
repeatedly named this tournament as
one of their favourites.

Many distinguished names from the history of tennis
have come to the Bernese Oberland at least once in
their career – including Swiss players, who have always
enjoyed taking advantage of this chance to perform in
front of a home crowd. Jakob Hlasek,
Roland Stadler and Stan Wawrinka
have all reached the finals in Gstaad,
while Roger Federer and Heinz
Günthardt have even made it on to the
champions list (singles and doubles
respectively). As always, the wild cards
awarded by Swiss Tennis continue
to offer an important opportunity for
Switzerland’s young, up-and-coming
tennis talent to pick up some vital ATP
tournament points.

hat unser Zentralvorstand damals entschieden,
das Turnier mitzuretten und für die Zukunft zu
rüsten. Das Swiss Open ist aus dem Schweizer
Sportveranstaltungskalender nicht wegzudenken, das
neue Konzept des „Boutique-Turniers” trägt Früchte.
Swiss Tennis and the Municipality of
Saanen have had equal rights to the
Gstaad tournament since 2006. Our governing board
showed no hesitation in taking the decision to save the
tournament and make it fit to showcase tennis in the
future. After all, this event is an indispensable fixture in
Switzerland’s sporting calendar, and the new “boutique
tournament” concept is bearing fruit.

cake of this region’s overall offering.
They bring the region comparatively
high visitor numbers of around 45 per cent for the
summer season. Year in, year out, the tournament enjoys

„Z Bärner Oberland isch schön“, diese Passage aus
einem Volkslied spricht mir aus dem Herzen. Mit meinen
Eltern verbrachte ich oft Ferien an der Lenk, und ebenso
oft habe ich das Gstaader Turnier mitten im heimeligen
Dorfkern besucht, als noch die Ladys mitspielten und
der Center Court mit dem Verschieben der Tribüne
Strassenseite erst während der
Woche fertig gebaut wurde. Gstaad
war der kräftige Schrittmacher für
das Turniertennis in der Schweiz.
Mein Respekt und Dank gelten nicht
zuletzt Jacques (Köbi) Hermenjat, der
als Turnierdirektor und als Mitglied
im Men’s Pro Council das ATP-TourTennis in diesem Land einführte.
“Z Bärner Oberland isch schön” (“The Bernese Oberland
is beautiful”) – these lyrics from a Swiss folk song echo
my own heartfelt sentiments. I often spent holidays in
the Oberland resort of Lenk with my parents, and I have
also often been to the tennis tournament at the heart of
the charming village of Gstaad, back when the women’s
competition was still going and the
Centre Court was not completely set
up until well into the week, when
the stand that ran along the road
was moved. Gstaad was the ultimate
pioneer for tennis tournaments in
Switzerland. I owe particular respect
and gratitude to Jacques (Köbi)
Hermenjat, who brought ATP tour
tennis to this country as Tournament
Director and a member of the Men’s
International Professional Tennis
Council.
Gstaad hat eine wunderbare Tradition,
ein wichtiges Kulturgut in diesem
Sport der fairen Sportmanship, in

come and go, Gstaad has a wonderful tradition, an
important cultural heritage in a sport characterised by
fair play. The times have changed in the world of tennis

MARKING THE CENTENARY THROUGH

Tennis has been played in Gstaad for a century, while
the craft of paper cutting has been practised in the
Saanenland region for almost 200 years. These two
disciplines have now been united to mark the anniversary
of the tennis tournament, and the result can be seen
on the cover of this magazine. “Combining traditional
elements with the sport of tennis and the typical style
of Gstaad was the biggest challenge,” says Beatrice
Straubhaar, an expert paper cutter from Lauenen, who
created this special work of art. She also remarks that
cutting out the unfamiliar figures of the players, line
judges and umpires was a complicated process.
Seit 100 Jahren wird in Gstaad Tennis gespielt; seit fast
200 Jahren werden im Saanenland Scherenschnitte
angefertigt. Zum Jubiläum des Tennisturniers wurden
die beiden Künste vereint, mit dem Resultat auf dem
Titelblatt diesen Magazins. „Die traditionellen Teile
mit dem Tennissport und dem Gstaad-Typischen zu
verbinden, war die grösste Herausforderung“, sagt
Beatrice Straubhaar, die Scherenschnitt-Meisterin aus
Lauenen, die das Kunstwerk kreiert hat. Auch sei das
Schneiden von ungewohnten Positionen der Spieler,
Linien- und Schiedsrichter kompliziert gewesen.
Die Basis für die Arbeit von Beatrice Straubhaar bilden
Scherenschnittpapier (vorne schwarz und hinten weiss),
Bleistift, Radiergummi, Scherenschnittschere und
Cutter. Damit hat sie in den 30 Jahren, in denen sie
das Kunsthandwerk pflegt, schon unzählige Unikate
hergestellt, wobei sie kaum einen Scherenschnitt
zerschnitten oder neu angefangen hat. „Die essenzielle
Basis bildet die Zeichnung auf der weissen Seite
des Papiers, die Feinheiten entstehen dann beim
Schneiden“ erklärt sie die Kunst, die durch Johann
Jakob Hauswirth anfangs des 19ten Jahrhunderts im
Saanenland Einzug hielt. Noch heute gilt die Region
als Hochburg des Scherenschnittes, wobei – wie
beim Jubiläumsscherenschnitt – traditionelle Motive
mit aktuellen ergänzt werden. Der Tennissport hat
auch einiges gemeinsam mit der ScherenschnittKunst: Wie die Tennisspieler brauchen die Künstler
viel Geduld, Präzision, Ausdauer und Leidenschaft.
„Und einen Tennisellbogen kann man sich auch
beim Scherenschneiden holen“ schmunzelt Beatrice
Straubhaar.
The basic materials Beatrice Straubhaar uses for her
work are specialist paper cutting paper (which is black
on the front and white on the back), a pencil, an eraser,
paper cutting scissors and a craft knife. She has been
practising this craft for over 30 years now, creating
countless unique works. She hardly ever ends up cutting
them up accidentally or having to start again. “To begin
with, I draw the basic design on the white side of the
paper, then the details are added during the cutting
stage,” she says, explaining the creative technique that
was introduced to the Saanenland by Johann Jakob
Hauswirth in the early 19th century. To this day, the region
is still regarded as a stronghold of paper cut art, using
modern approaches to enhance traditional motifs – as is
the case with the centenary paper cut. The sport of tennis
also has something in common with the art of paper
cutting: like tennis players, paper cutters need plenty
of patience, precision, perseverance and passion. “And
you can get tennis elbow from paper cutting too,” adds
Beatrice Straubhaar with a smile.

Der 100ste Geburtstag des Gstaader Tennisturniers wird
2015 gebührend gefeiert. Nicht nur die neun Tage des
Tennisturniers vom 25. Juli bis am 2. August werden von
Überraschungen und speziellen Anlässen gespickt sein,
schon jetzt ist das 100-Jährige mit der Publikation dieses
Magazins in aller Munde und von nun an wird nach und
nach auf das Jubiläum eingestimmt. Hier ein kleiner
Vorgeschmack:
In 2015, we will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the
Gstaad tennis tournament in style. Plenty of surprises
and special events are in store – and not just during
the nine-day tournament from 25 July to 2 August: the
publication of this magazine is already getting everyone
talking about the centenary and from now on we will
gradually be setting the mood for the anniversary
celebrations. Here is a little taster of what is to come:

Analog der in den 90er-Jahren ausgetragenen ShowMatches wird am Qualifikationssonntag, 26. Juli, ein
Exhibition-Match mit Legenden aus dem Tennissport

Following the tradition of the showcase matches played
during the 1990s, an exhibition match featuring tennis
legends will take place on the qualifying Sunday, 26 July.

As well as playing host to Wimbledon and other Grand
Slam champions, the tournament in Gstaad has also
welcomed many talented young players from all over
the world throughout the years and has kick-started the
careers of great stars. In addition to the exceptionally
gifted Roger Federer, players such as Chilean Marcelo
Rios, world number one in 1998, received his first ATP
tour wild card in Gstaad. Stan Wawrinka also made his
debut on the ATP tour in Gstaad.
Nebst Wimbledon- und anderen Grand-Slam-TurnierSiegern, hiess das Turnier in Gstaad durch die Jahre
hindurch viele junge Talente aus der ganzen Welt
willkommen und wurde zur Geburtsstätte von grossen
