oyau le plus réputé de l'Arizona, le Grand Canyon ne cesse
de fasciner les visiteurs depuis que les premiers pionniers,
dans les années 1880, ont découvert ses merveilles et, du
coup, pris conscience de ce qu'un site aussi spectaculaire se prêtait
beaucoup mieux au tourisme qu'à l'exploitation de ses ressources
cuprifères.
En 1908, les autorités fédérales ont officiellement entériné ce
choix et déclaré le Grand Canyon monument national. Puis, en
février 1919, elles ont rehaussé son statut en créant le Grand
Canyon National Park, qui couvre une superficie plus grande que
le canyon comme tel et englobe ses abords immédiats. D'une étendue de 4 931 km2, ce parc qui avait reçu 44 173 visiteurs l'année
de sa création en accueille aujourd'hui plus
de cinq millions par année.
On aurait beau recourir à des milliers
d'adjectifs pour décrire le Grand Canyon,
entre autres "spectaculaire", "imposant" et
"superbe", il reste que la plupart des visiteurs
demeurent tout simplement bouche bée
devant tant de splendeur. Il a fallu plus de
cinq millions d'années au vent et à la pluie
pour sculpter ce chef-d'œuvre, et en faire le
plus admiré de tout l'Arizona. Bref, le Grand
Canyon, consacré site du patrimoine mondial par l'UNESCO, est tout à fait irrésistible.
De plus, si vous vous passionnez pour les
grands espaces, sachez que vous trouverez

its charm and realized this spectacular site was destined
for tourism rather than copper mining.
In 1908, federal authorities concurred with this decision, naming
the Grand Canyon a National Monument. In February 1919, they
further elevated its status by designating an enlarged area as the
Grand Canyon National Park. Spanning 3,931km2, the park has
gone from welcoming 44,173 visitors in 1919 to more than five
million per year today.
Thousands of adjectives can be used to describe the Grand
Canyon, including "spectacular," "awe-inspiring" and "superb," but
most visitors are simply left speechless by the
sight of this incredible natural wonder. It took
more than 5 million years of wind and rain
erosion to create Arizona's most visited attraction. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the
Grand Canyon is truly irresistible.
Moreover, if the outdoors are your passion,
there are countless opportunities to get out
and do just about anything your heart desires.
Page, a booming town situated next to Lake
Powell, north of the Grand Canyon's North
Rim, is a great spot for outdoor recreation
enthusiasts. Watersports are the most popular
activities, but many golfing opportunities can
also be found here.

descente inoubliable à tous points de vue, que vous optiez pour une
glisse d'une journée ou une expédition en bonne et due forme de
19 jours. Les prix varient en fonction de la durée de l'aventure, mais
gravitent plus ou moins autour de 200$ par jour. On propose
généralement ce genre d'activité sportive entre avril et octobre,
quoique certaines entreprises restent ouvertes toute l'année. On
dénombre plus de 15 entreprises autorisées à naviguer sur les.
eaux du fleuve Colorado, mais la demande est telle que vous devez
réserver votre place longtemps à l'avance.
Randonnée pédestre
Le Grand Canyon regorge de possibilités de randonnée, aussi
bien pour les débutants que pour les spécialistes en la matière. Bien
que la plupart des tracés soient exigeants du fait de la déclivité marquée du canyon, il convient de savoir que les Rim Trails conviennent tout à fait à ceux et celles qui recherchent une randonnée plus

Here are a few suggestions of outdoor activities in the Grand
Canyon area:
Rafting
Thrill-seekers will take great pleasure in rafting down the Grand
Canyon's Colorado River. The ride provides an exhilarating shot of
adrenaline and the knowledgeable guides will captivate you with
facts about the geology and history of the canyon. Rafters will not
forget that this trip is often dubbed "the trip of a lifetime." One-day
float trips are available, as are longer voyages of up to 19 days on
the water. Prices vary according to the length of the trip but should
hover around $200US per day. Trips are usually offered between
April and October, but some companies operate year-round. More
than 15 guide companies are authorized to navigate the waters of
the Colorado River. You should contact them at least a year ahead
before making plans to raft the canyon.

facile; ainsi les tracés revêtus qui serpentent le long du versant sud
se prêtent-ils on ne peut mieux aux promenades de 15 min à une
heure et demie, tout en offrant de belles vues en contre-plongée sur
le canyon.
La randonnée la plus populaire sur le versant sud est celle du
Bright Angel Trail. Ce sentier débute à l'ouest du Bright Angel
Lodge, descend jusqu'au Phantom Ranch et offre des panoramas
spectaculaires sur le canyon. Ceux et celles qui n'ont pas l'intention
de passer la nuit au ranch peuvent tout de même profiter du sentier et tirer parti des nombreuses haltes qui ponctuent son tracé (et
où vous trouverez de l'eau en été). La randonnée la plus courte est
de 3 mi (4,8 km) et va jusqu'au 1 ½ Mile Resthouse; comptez de
quatre à six heures de marche aller-retour.

Hiking
The Grand Canyon is full of hiking opportunities appropriate for
beginners and experts alike. Although most hikes are strenuous due
to the steep pitch of the canyon, the Rim Trails are suitable for
those looking for an easy hike. The paved trails meander along the
South Rim and are best for 15min to 1.5hr walks. These trails offer
gorgeous views of the inner canyon from up high.
The most popular hike on the South Rim is the Bright Angel
Trail. With its trailhead west of the Bright Angel Lodge, this route
winds down to the Phantom Ranch and offers spectacular views of
the canyon. Those who are not planning to stay the night at the
ranch can still enjoy the trail and its several stops along the way. The
shortest hike covers 4.8km and leads to the 1 ½ Mile Resthouse,
requiring 2 to 4hrs to complete; the longer 10km hike takes 4 to
6hrs round-trip. Water is available at these stops during the summer.
Experienced hikers who are not daunted by an unmaintained
trail can attempt the Hermit Trail. The trailhead starts 152m west
of Hermits Rest. Hiking boots are required for this trip, which dips
deep into the canyon. Two options are available: the 7.2km route
stops at Santa Maria Spring and takes 5 to 8hrs to complete,
while the 10.5km hike to the Dripping Springs takes between 6
and 9hrs. Hikers should bring their own drinking water or be prepared to treat the water they find along the way.
Note that pets on leashes are permitted on the South Rim but not
on the North Rim trails.
Golf
The Elephant Rocks Golf Course is located a mere 4.8km west
of Williams. Set amidst the pine trees, the course offers 18 holes
that will challenge the avid golfer. There is also a driving range and
a practice green. To tee off at another superb course, check out the
Lake Powell National Golf Course. Golf Digest gives it a fourstar rating.

Fishing
Pêche
Pour pêcher à toute époque de l'année dans les environs de
Williams, songez au lac Kaibab, accessible en voiture, pourvu

near Williams, try Kaibab
Lake. The lake is accessible
by car and offers a paved
boat-launch area as well as
a
wheelchair-accessible
pier nearby. Anglers can try
their luck with the rainbow
trout. Cataract Lake is
another local favourite fishing hole. Rainbow trout and
German
brown
trout
inhabit the lake, just waiting for eager anglers.
There is a boat-launch
ramp, but please note that
power boats are limited to
single electric motors or gas-powered engines of 8HP or less. The
lake is open for fishing from May to October.
Horseback Riding
For a taste of the Wild West, the Mountain Ranch Stables are
ready to take eager riders on trail and hay rides, treating them to
some good old cowboy singing along the way. Another ranch, the
Stables in the Pines, saddles up for half-day or full-day rides
through Kaibab National
Forest.

ité millénaire, Bruxelles se découvre en douceur, en laissant le charme opérer. Quoi de mieux qu'un arrêt gourmand à la table d'un café de la Grand Place, pour un
premier contact avec la capitale de la Belgique ? Perçue d'abord
comme une ville d'affaires, Bruxelles sait pourtant bien, si on s'y
attarde un peu, déployer tout un arsenal de séduction.
Devant une bière blonde ou russe, des frites dorées et des
moules à la chair rosée, on oublie le boulot et on laisse ses yeux
détailler ces palais majestueux sur lesquels le soleil balaie des
ombres enchanteresses. L'effet est saisissant.
Le houblon aidant, on croirait voir se profiler les fantômes de
Victor Hugo, pensif, accoudé à la fenêtre de la résidence qu'il
habitait pendant son exil. Tiens, ne serait-ce pas Verlaine et
Rimbaud, encore en train de se chamailler ? Et ces ombres
dansantes, ne s'agit-il pas des robes froufroutantes des belles
dames qui assistaient aux tournois du Moyen âge ou aux fêtes
grandioses ou sanglantes tenues à cet endroit ? Ah si ces vieilles
pierres pouvaient parler !
L'immense rectangle (110 m de longueur sur 69 de largeur) de

ith a thousand-year-old history, Brussels takes its time
in revealing its many charms to the uninitiated visitor.
And there is no better introduction to this vibrant capital of Belgium than to spend a leisurely afternoon at one of the
many cafés found around its impressive Grand Place. Although
considered to be mainly a center of commerce, Brussels has been
known to seduce many of its visitors who have chosen to spend even
a brief sojourn in the city.
Seated before a tall refreshing glass of Belgian lager or dark ale,
crisp golden French fries and a plate of fresh, glistening mussels,
you quickly forget everyday cares as your eyes feast on these delectable offerings, made even more so laid out on a sunlit tablecloth.
The effect is quite enchanting and equally appetizing.
After a couple glasses of Belgium's world-famous beer, it's easy
to believe that one can actually see the phantom of a pensive Victor
Hugo, leaning his elbows on the window sill of the residence in
which he lived during its exile. And hold it a minute! Could that be
the poets Verlaine and Rimbaud, still in the heat of one of their legendary squabbles? And those dancing shadows; aren't they the frilly

la Grand Place, qui se couvre, en été, de
milliers de bégonias (75 000) qui forment
un tapis coloré, n'était au XIIe siècle, qu'un
marais asséché. Aujourd'hui, c'est le cœur
même de la ville ancienne et la fierté du
peuple. Dominée par l'Hôtel de Ville, édifice construit au XVe siècle, la Grand Place
révèle aussi des édifices de style gothique,
des anciennes maisons de corporation
(union de gens qui ne pratiquaient pas le
même métier) bâties après le bombardement de 1695 et restaurées au XIXe ainsi
que de nombreuses statuettes dont celle de
Saint-Michel…..
Durant la journée, l'endroit grouille de
visiteurs
qui
visitent,
magasinent,
bouquinent ou flânent aux terrasses pour le
simple plaisir des yeux qui assistent à ce va
et vient sympathique. En soirée, spectacle
"son et lumière" ou illuminations plongent
l'endroit dans une ambiance féérique. On
comprend que Cocteau ait dit de la GrandPlace que c'était le plus riche théâtre du
monde.
À deux pas de là, Place de Brouckère,
un hôtel de prestige qu'il faut absolument

The immense rectangle that is La Grand
Place, measuring some 110 metres by 69
metres, is covered in summer with an intricate display of 75,000 begonias that form
a huge, colourful outdoor carpet. In
the12th century, it was nothing more than a
drained marsh. Today, it is the very heart of
the old city and the pride of the Brussels'
inhabitants. Dominated by the Town Hall,
which was built in the 15th century, La
Grand Place also features buildings in the
Gothic style, such as the imposing Guild
Halls built after the bombardment of the
city in 1695 and restored in the 19th century, as well as many statuettes, including
those of Saint-Michel.
During the day, La Grand Place teems
with locals and tourists who visit, shop,
browse or stroll along its terraces. Many
are there for the simple pleasure of watching the comings and goings of the affable
crowds. In the evenings, spectacular sound
and light shows or illuminations of the surrounding historic buildings transform La
Grand Place into a magical place. It is said
that Cocteau once called this imposing
Town Square "the liveliest theatre in the
world."
Located a few steps from the square, the
Place de Brouckère is a prestigious hotel
that offers visitors a unique and unforgettable stay. The nearby Hôtel Métropole is
also an excellent choice. A historical listed
monument, the décor of this hundred-yearold hotel is a lively mix of the French
Renaissance, Romanesque and the early

On tient peut-être là, l'explication de la popularité du Manneken
Pis, figure légendaire, comblée d'honneur et de distinctions. De

d'indépendance des bruxellois, frondeurs, espiègles et moqueurs,

L'histoire raconte que, déjà au Moyen âge, une statue portait le

Perhaps this is the explanation of the popularity of the Manneken
Pis, a legendary figure that has been showered with honours and
distinctions. Many legends exist in connection with this symbol of the
spirit of independence of the inhabitants of Brussels, its past rebels,
mischief-makers and assorted rogues. The story goes that, as early
as the Middle Ages, there existed a statue bearing the same name.
In any event, it is impossible to resist the strong impulse to join the
flood of tourists who pay homage to this small bronze fellow, who
has been peeing for centuries under the amazed gaze of the
tourists. The Manneken Pis fountain is located not far from the
Grand Place.
After having paid homage to the statue, why not go on to admire
his imposing wardrobe? Oh yes! Over 750 different outfits, one of
which one which transforms him into Elvis, are on display in the
Maison du Roy de la Grand Place!
But the Manneken Pis is not alone in having a museum. There
are some 75 other interesting museums in Brussels including the

fouilles réalisées au Pendjab et au Gujarat révèlent que la

En fait, les deux villes d'Harappa et de Mohenjo-Daro, situées sur

Gujarat reveal that the Indus Valley civilisation was a highly
developed urban civilisation.
In fact the two cities of Harappa and Mohenjodaro, situated on
two sides of the river Ravi, are known to have been built on a similar plan. But that only meant a new wave of urbanisation was taking place along the Ganges around 1500 BC.
This has been recorded in the Rig Veda – the earliest known literary source composed in this period that
sheds light on India's past.

The Great Dynasties
By 6th century BC, the Magadh rulers
dominated the Northern plains. It was also
the time when new thinking emerged in the
form of Buddhism and Jainism to challenge
Hindu orthodoxy. The Magadh rule was followed by the rule of Chandragupta Maurya
(322-298 B.C.), one of India's greatest
emperors.
The Mauryan reign peaked under the
reign of Ashoka the Great who extended his
empire from the Kashmir and Peshawar in the
North to Mysore in the South and Orissa in
the East.

Not only was Ashoka a great ruler, he
was one of the most successful propagators
of Buddhism in the country. After Ashoka's
death in 232 B.C. the empire began to disintegrate and the country was repeatedly
raided and plundered by foreign invaders,
leaving India disunited and weak for the
next 400 years.
Stability returned with the reign of
Chandra Gupta I (380-412 A.D.). His rule
is considered the golden period in Indian
history when art and culture flourished and
the country prospered.
Unlike the North of India, foreign invasions had little impact on life in South India
which also saw the rise and decline of
many empires. These included the Cholas
whose rule extended to Sri Lanka and
South East Asia, the Pandyas, the Cheras,
the Pallavas and the Chalukyas.
Under the various rulers, arts and craft
in the South also saw the emergence of
various styles of architecture and some of
the grandest architectural accomplishments
in the South - the most famous being the
exquisitely crafted Chola bronzes. These
were followed by the Hoysala and the
Vijaynagar empires - among the greatest
Hindu empires.

Humayun's reign was followed up by his
son Akbar who actually consolidated power
and extended the empire across North
India and parts of South India.
One of India's wisest rulers and most
able administrators, Akbar's reign is considered to be one of the best the country
has known. Akbar was succeeded by
Jahangir, followed by his son Shah Jahan best known as the builder of the Taj Mahal,
the Red Fort and the Jama Masjid. Shah
Jahan's reign was followed by Aurangzeb's.
The death of Aurangzeb saw the decline of
the Mughal rule in India.
Over the centuries India had always
been attractive to traders, and one of the
first Europeans to come to India was the
Portuguese trader Vasco da Gama who
landed at Calicut, sailing via the Cape of
Good Hope in 1498. The Portuguese
established their colony in Goa in the 16th
Century but they did not expand it though
their rule continued till 1961. Vasco da
Gama was followed by the French, the
Dutch and the English, all of whom were
lured by the commercial interests that India
offered. By the last quarter of the 18th century the English established themselves as
the dominant power in India and they set
about making revolutionary changes in the
social, political and the economic life of the
country.

La Domination Britannique
Au long des siècles, l'Inde a toujours attisé la convoitise des
marchands, et l'un des premiers Européens à venir en Inde fut le
commerçant portugais Vasco de Gama, qui débarqua à Calicut en
passant par Le Cap de Bonne-Espérance en 1498. Les Portugais
établirent une colonie à Goa au XVIe siècle, mais ne poursuivirent
pas leur conquête, même si leur règne continua jusqu'en 1961.
Vasco de Gama fut suivi par les Français, les Hollandais et les
Anglais, tous attirés par les intérêts commerciaux offerts par l'Inde.
Dans le dernier quart du XVIIIe
siècle, les Anglais s'imposèrent
comme la puissance dominante
en Inde et commencèrent à introduire des changements révolutionnaires dans la vie sociale,
politique et économique du pays.

Les évènements atteignirent leur apogée dans la seconde moitié
du XIXe siècle, lorsque la première guerre d'indépendance éclata en
1857, à Meerut. Elle fut provoquée par l'introduction par les Anglais
d'un nouveau fusil et d'une nouvelle cartouche dans l'armée. Les
cartouches que les soldats devaient déchirer avec leurs dents contenaient prétendument de la graisse de porc et de boeuf, ce qui
offensait à la fois les sentiments religieux des hindous et des musulmans.
Towards Independence
The disintegration of the Mughal empire, fighting among the
Maratha rulers and inability of the various rulers across the country
to unite against a common enemy saw the British consolidate their
position in the country. However, the 19th century saw a revival of
national pride and social reform and the Indians began to tire of
the suppressive British rule.
Things reached a flash point in the second half of the 19th century when the first war of independence in 1857 broke out in
Meerut. It was sparked off by the introduction of a new rifle and cartridge by the British in the Army. The cartridges which soldiers had
to bite off, allegedly contained pork and beef tallow, which offended the religious sentiments of both Hindus
and Muslims.
The soldiers rebelled,
reached Delhi and proclaimed Bahadurshah
Zafar the sovereign ruler
of India. They were eventually overpowered by the
British.

But there was no looking back for the Indians
who wanted social reform
and freedom. The Indian
National Congress was set
up and educated Indians
started formulating strategies to assert their
birthright to independence.
