he figure skating team brings great potential to Team Ontario and is looking forward to carrying on the tradition of strong
performances at Canada Winter Games. These athletes represent the highest level of skating in the Province; and, in addition

The Team Manager will be John Briscoe from Waterloo who will be joined by coaches Darlene Joseph and Scott Rachuk. All three
bring significant experience and expertise as coaches and team managers at the provincial, national and international levels. Julie
Dunlop, who was one of the 2009 Canadian Special Olympics World Team coaches, will be with the Special Olympics skaters. Dave
Edwards will be attending as chaperone.

Kincardine
Julie has 26 years of coaching experience and
she was selected as a coach for Team Canada
in 2009 for the World Special Olympic Games.
Her goal for the Games is to help her athletes
achieve their goals and help them enjoy the
experience.
Joseph, Darlene
Avec 26 années d’expérience en tant
qu’entraîneure, Julie a été sélectionnée comme
entraîneure d’Équipe Canada en 2009 pour les
Jeux Olympiques spéciaux mondiaux. Son
objectif pour les Jeux est d’aider ses athlètes à
atteindre leurs buts et leur permettre d’apprécier
cette expérience.

Navan
Darlene has been involved in figure skating for
over 40 years, seventeen as a competitive and
professional ice skater. She is the Director of
Skating at the Gloucester Skating Club. She has
been involved as a coach in many sets of Ontario
Winter Games and looks forward to this new role.
Rachuk, Scott
Darlene évolue dans le patinage artistique
depuis plus de 40 ans, dont dix-sept en tant que
patineuse de compétition et professionnelle.
Actuellement directrice du patinage au
Gloucester Skating Club, elle a exercé les
fonctions d’entraîneure dans de nombreuses
éditions des Jeux d’hiver de l’Ontario et se réjouit
de ce nouveau rôle.

Strathroy
Scott is currently the Director of the Competitive
Skating Centre of Strathroy and he has been
involved in his sport for 38 years. He enjoys
working with athletes at the high performance
training centre and he looks forward to helping
our Ontario athletes achieve their goals.

Centre de Strathroy, Scott s’investit dans ce
sport depuis 38 ans. Il aime travailler avec des

Briscoe, John
~ Team Manager / chef d'équipe
Waterloo
John has coached for 37 years, including ten
world championships and the 1988 Olympic
Winter Games, and is presently the Techincal
Director for Western Ontario. His motivational
message for the athletes is to perform their best
and learn from the experience.
Edwards, David
Entraîneur depuis 37 ans, y compris pour dix
championnats mondiaux et les Jeux olympiques
d’hiver de 1988, John est actuellement directeur
technique pour la région de l’Ouest de l'Ontario.
Son message d’encouragement aux athlètes est
de faire de leur mieux et de tirer des leçons de
cette expérience.

Ajax
This is Dave’s first time as a volunteer chaperone
and his goal is to make sure that the athletes are
safe and comfortable. He is a stage and TV actor
and the Board President of the Ajax Community
Theatre.
Bell, Hayleigh

C’est la première fois que Dave est chaperon
bénévole et son objectif est de veiller à la
sécurité et au confort des athlètes. Acteur de
théâtre et pour la télévision, il est le président du
conseil de l’Ajax Community Theatre.

Acton
Hayleigh has skated for seven years and she has
been with her new partner, Alistair Sylvester, as
of July 2010. They placed first at the recent
Skate Canada Western and Eastern Challenge in
December 2010. Hayleigh hopes to continue to
grow with her new partner and be in London in
2014.
Hayleigh, qui patine depuis sept ans, est depuis
juillet 2010 avec son nouveau partenaire, Alistair
Sylvester. Ils sont arrivés premiers au récent Défi
de l’Est et l’Ouest Patinage Canada en
décembre 2010. Hayleigh espère continuer à
progresser avec son nouveau partenaire et être
présente à Londres en 2012.

Bent, Mackenzie

Age: 13
Uxbridge
Mackenzie is in her sixth year in the ice dance
discipline and she hopes to participate in an
International Grand Prix event in the years to
come. Mackenzie and her partner, Garrett,
placed third at the Skate Canada East/West
Challenge in December 2010.
Clarkson, Brianna
~ Athlete / athlète
Dans sa sixième année de pratique de la danse
sur glace, Mackenzie espère participer à un
événement international Grand Prix dans les
années à venir. En décembre 2010, Mackenzie
et son partenaire, Garrett, se sont classés
troisièmes au Défi de l’Est et l’Ouest Patinage
Canada.

Maidstone
Brianna has been involved in figure skating for
13 years at the Riverside Skating Club. Her
personal role model is Joannie Rochette. Brianna
placed ninth at the Skate Canada East/West
Challenge in December 2010. Her plan is to
bring a positive attitude, motivation and a friendly
smile to Halifax.
Glavine, Samantha
~ Athlete / athlète
Depuis 13 ans, Brianna s’investit dans le
patinage artistique au Riverside Skating Club.
Elle a pour modèle Joannie Rochette. En
décembre 2010, Brianna s’est classée neuvième
au Défi de l’Est et l’Ouest Patinage Canada. Elle
vient à Halifax avec son attitude positive, sa
motivation et le sourire aux lèvres.

Samantha has been skating for nine years and
she is a member of the Rideau Skating club.
Along with her partner, Jeff Hough, they won a
bronze medal at the Skate Canada East/West
Challenge in December 2010. Her message to
her fellow athletes is to believe in yourself and
your dreams will come true.
Pratiquant le patinage depuis neuf ans,
Samantha est membre du Rideau Skating club.
Avec son partenaire, Jeff Hough, elle a remporté
une médaille de bronze au Défi de l’Est et
l’Ouest Patinage Canada en décembre 2010.
Elle invite les autres athlètes à croire en eux et
leurs rêves se réaliseront.

Megan has skated for six years at the New
Tecumseth Figure Skating Club. Her goal for
Halifax is to be on the podium and she is
honored to represent Ontario at the Games.
Nasu-Yu, Lisa
~ Athlete / athlète
Megan patine depuis six ans au New Tecumseth
Figure Skating Club. Pour Halifax, elle vise le
podium et se déclare honorée de représenter
l’Ontario aux Jeux.
Age: 13
Ottawa
Lisa has been skating for five years and is a
member of Minto Skating Club. She is the prenovice national silver medalist this year and the
Eastern Ontario champion. She is excited about
the learning opportunity made possible by
participating in the Canada Games.
Rau, Shalena
~ Athlete / athlète
Lisa patine depuis cinq ans et est membre du
Club de patinage Minto. Médaillée d’argent sur le
plan national dans la catégorie Prénovices, elle
est championne de l’Est de l'Ontario. Sa
participation aux Jeux du Canada constitue une
expérience très formatrice, ce qui la réjouit.

Waterloo
Shalena has skated for nine years at the
Kitchener Waterloo Skating club. Her goal is to
win gold with her partner, Phelan Simpson. At
the 2011 Skate Canada Western Eastern
Challenge they placed first. Shalena looks
forward to experiencing the team environment in
Halifax and being with the best athletes in
Ontario and Canada.
Shalena patine depuis neuf ans au Kitchener
Waterloo Skating club. Elle et son partenaire,
Phelan Simpson, qui sont arrivés premiers au
Défi de l’Est et l’Ouest Patinage Canada 2011,
visent cette fois-ci la médaille d’or. Shalena se
réjouit de découvrir la vie d’équipe à Halifax et de
côtoyer les meilleurs athlètes de l’Ontario et du
Canada.

Age: 18
Orillia
Carlea has been skating for fourteen years at the
Orillia Figure Skating Club. She has competed in
Special Olympic events for 6 years and she won
a bronze medal in Whitehorse in 2007. Her goal
is to win gold in Halifax.
Babcock, Thomas
~ Athlete / athlète
Carlea patine depuis quatorze ans au Club de
patinage artistique Orillia. Depuis six ans, elle
dispute des compétitions des Jeux Olympiques
spéciaux et a remporté une médaille de bronze à
Whitehorse en 2007. Elle vise la médaille d’or à
Halifax.
Age: 20
Kingston
Thomas has skated for ten years and his current
club is the Kingston Silver Blades. At the World
Winter Games in 2009 in Boise, Idaho, Thomas
won a silver medal and a gold medal at the
National Winter Games in Quebec in 2008.
Cheng, Antony
~ Athlete / athlète
Thomas patine depuis dix ans et son club actuel
est le Kingston Silver Blades. Lors des Jeux
olympiques spéciaux mondiaux d’hiver de 2009,
à Boise, dans l’Idaho, Thomas a remporté la
médaille d’argent et la médaille d’or lors des
Jeux nationaux d’hiver de 2008 à Québec.

Richmond Hill
Anthony placed fifth at the Skate Canada
Western and Eastern Challenge in December
2010 and the Juvenile Men’s champion at the
Ontario Winter Games in March 2010. He has
been skating for five years and is a member of
the York Region Skating Academy.
Anthony s’est classé cinquième au Défi de l’Est
et l’Ouest Patinage Canada en décembre 2010
et est devenu champion de la catégorie Hommes
cadets lors des Jeux d’hiver de l’Ontario en mars
2010. Il patine depuis cinq ans et est membre de
la York Region Skating Academy.

Ajax
Jonathan has been skating for seven years with
the Ajax Rising Stars and the Ajax Skating Club.
Jonathan’s recent achievements include gold
medals in Level 2 Men’s dance at the Frankford
Regional qualifier in January 2010 and the
Alliston Regional Invitational in February 2010.
Hough, Jeffrey

Jonathan patine depuis sept ans avec l’Ajax
Rising Stars et l’Ajax Skating Club. Ses derniers
exploits comprennent des médailles d’or en
danse Hommes niveau 2 à l’épreuve de
qualification régionale de Frankford en janvier
2010 et à la compétition régionale sur invitation
d’Alliston en février 2010.

Russell
Jeff has skated for ten years at the Minto Skating
Club. His goal for the Canada Games is to win
the gold with his partner, Samantha. He notes
that he started Figure skating to help with his
hockey game.
Mackeen, Garrett

Jeff patine depuis dix ans au Club de patinage
Minto. Son objectif pour les Jeux du Canada est
de remporter la médaille d’or avec sa partenaire,
Samantha. Il précise qu’il s’est mis au patinage
artistique pour améliorer son jeu de hockey.

Oshawa
Garrett has been involved in his sport for thirteen
years and his role model is Joe Sakic. Garrett
also plays hockey and helps his mother coach
CanSkate and powerskating. His message to his
fellow teammates is dream it, believe it, live it!
Garrett s’investit dans son sport depuis treize
ans et sa référence est Joe Sakic. Également
joueur de hockey, Garrett aide sa mère à
entraîner le programme Patinage Plus et le
patinage intensif. Son message à ses
coéquipiers : « Il faut y rêver, y croire, le vivre!

Margalik, Denis

Age: 13
Mississauga
Denis has been skating for six years at the
Woodbine Winter Club and placed first at the
Ontario Winter Games and seventh at the East/
West Challenge. In 2010 he won the Skate
Canada Competitive Athlete of the Year award.
Competing in the Canada Games is like
competing in the Olympics to Denis.
Simpson, Phelan
~ Athlete / athlète
Denis patine depuis six ans au Woodbine Winter
Club et s’est classé premier aux Jeux d’hiver de
l’Ontario et septième au Défi de l’Est et l’Ouest.
En 2010, il a été nommé Athlète de compétition
de l’année par Patinage Canada. Pour Denis,
disputer les Jeux du Canada, c’est comme
disputer les Jeux olympiques.
Age: 15
Kitchener
Phelan has skated for eight years with the
Kitchener Waterloo Skating Club. His goal is to
win the gold with his partner, Shalena. They have
been together for three years and they have
been the top Canadian Novice Pairs team this
season. His message to fellow athletes is to work
your hardest, respect your teammates and be
grateful for the chance to be there in Halifax.
Sylvester, Alistair
~ Athlete / athlète
Phelan patine depuis huit ans au Kitchener
Waterloo Skating club. Son objectif est de
remporter la médaille d’or avec sa partenaire,
Shalena. Ils sont ensemble depuis trois ans et
ont été reconnus meilleure équipe en Couples
novices canadiens cette saison. Son message
aux autres athlètes est de travailler de leur
mieux, respecter leurs coéquipiers et apprécier la
chance qui leur est donnée d’être là à Halifax.

Stratford
Alistair has been involved in figure skating for ten
years and his goal is to earn a gold medal and a
personal best finish with his partner Hayleigh. He
was the Novice men’s silver medalist at the 2010
Ontario Winter Games as well as the 2011
Canadian Pre-novice champion. People might
like to know that Alistair jumps the opposite way
to most skaters!
Alistair pratique le patinage artistique depuis dix
ans et son objectif est de remporter une médaille
d’or et un meilleur classement personnel avec sa
partenaire Hayleigh. Il a été médaillé d’argent
dans la catégorie Hommes Novices aux Jeux
d’hiver de l’Ontario 2010 et champion 2011
canadien en catégorie Prénovices. Le public
aimerait peut-être savoir qu’Alistair saute du côté
inverse de la plupart des patineurs!
