Teaching notes
Explain to your class that they are going to watch the trailer of the Minions movie in French:

As this is designed for French native speakers, they may find it very difficult to understand.
However, the activities (which gradually increase in difficulty) are aimed at helping them to deal
with more challenging listening material.
The worksheets are designed to be used in conjunction with the PowerPoint, which includes
some support for students as well as the answers.
Activity 1
Play the whole clip and ask students to note any words they hear.
Activity 2
Play the first 1 minute 45 seconds of the clip again and ask students to tick any of the words that
they hear on the list. The words are in order and do in fact all appear in the clip, although it’s
better not to tell the class this – see how many they can spot!
Activity 3
Students classify the words from the previous activity and look up the ones they don’t know /
can’t deduce. To save copying, this task could be projected from slide 2 of the PowerPoint,
with answers provided below and on slide 3.
Activity 4
Project the support words from slide 4 and ask students to use them to complete the gapped
script on p.3 while listening to the first 1 minute 45 seconds of the clip once again. Answers
below and on slide 5.
Students could then listen again, following the completed script, before using it to do some
reading in pairs, with a focus on pronunciation.
Activity 5
This translation activity includes the imperfect and conditional and may be most suitable for
higher ability students. Answers below and on slide 6.

2. Trouver un maître était plutôt simple.
Finding a master was quite simple.
3. Sans maître, ils n’avaient pas de but. Ils étaient sans raison de vivre et déprimés.
Without a master, they had no purpose. They had no reason to live and they
were depressed.
4. Stuart avait faim surtout; ce serait lui qui mangerait cette banane.
Stuart was especially hungry; it would be him who would eat this banana.
5. Quant à Bob, il avait peur de cette grande aventure.
As for Bob, he was scared of this big adventure.
