Indeed, EFS students from Year 6 to Year 9 and English stream students from Year 7 to 9 attended the screening of April and the Extraordinary World at Palace Electric Cinema. We are always pleased to bring students to the Festival which reinforces our additional support of French culture. Asia Pacific Region AEFE seminar for Principals and Directors Along with Julien Dugas, our French Primary Director / Conseiller Pédagogique, we attended annual AEFE seminar in Bangkok from 8th to 11th March. These were again four intense days which allowed many pedagogical conversations and also the promotion of our students achievements to other AEFE schools. On that occasion, we also prepared the Professional Learning plan for French teachers in the region. Our teachers will thus again have the opportunity to attend many training sessions in order to maintain their level of expertise with the latest contemporary pedagogy. SCHOOL TERM DATES 2016 Web radio Term 1 2016 1 February – 10 April Term 2 2016 26 April – 1 July Term 3 2016 18 July – 23 September Term 4 2016 10 October -16 December During the AEFE seminar, on Wednesday 9th March, we officially launched the Asia Pacific web radio live from Bangkok and Canberra. Ms Kerrie Blain started the show from Canberra before letting our young Year 8 journalists interview Mr Jean Paul Négrel, Deputy Director of AEFE (Agency for French Education Abroad). The web radio is an amazing pedagogical tool which can benefit all our students. It is extremely valuable to reinforce oral skills in any language that can be transferred to any subject. International Baccalaureate Conference Our Principal, Ms Kerrie Blain and our Deputy Principal, Ms McLoughlin attended an IB Conference from 14th to 18th March. The conference places an emphasis of many exchanges around pedagogy and is essential to maintain the level of excellence in our school. Citizenship Ceremony On Monday 21st March, we will again welcome an Australian Citizenship Ceremony in our school. On that occasion, one of our French Primary teachers, Ms Isabelle Chevreau will become Australian. We wish her an excellent Ceremony. She will be supported by many Primary students. This is always an interesting event for our students as citizenship is part of both French and Australian curricula. Francophonie Week After celebrating diversity with Harmony Day on Friday 18th March (Secondary) and Monday 21st March (Primary), we will have two major events in our school on the occasion of the Francophonie Week. Firstly, on Wednesday 23rd March, we are organizing a French Breakfast in the Multipurpose Hall, with the help and support of P&C association. On this occasion, parents will discover an exhibition of students’ works on the theme of Francophonie and on the 2016 Francophonie words. You are warmly welcome to attend this friendly event. Then, on Thursday 24th March, we will officially inaugurate our Multi-purpose Hall’s new name: Francophonie Hall. A special assembly will be held at 10am with representatives of Diplomatic missions of Francophone countries who will later discover our hall and visit our students’ exhibition. Visit of Mr Bruno Delvallée, Inspector of French Ministry of Education From 28th to 31st March, Mr Bruno Delvallée, Inspector of French Ministry of Education, will visit our school. This yearly visit is very important to us as it is a great opportunity to share our teaching practices and their implementation in the school. On this occasion, he will visit many classes and will hold discussions with the teaching teams. These yearly visits contribute to the continuous improvement of our teaching practices that benefit all our students. Primary parent-teacher interviews Primary teacher-parent interviews will be held on 30th and 31st March and 4th April. We will communicate soon on this important event for parents, teachers and students. I now wish you two great weeks before our next Telopea Topics in which we will report on all these events that reinforce our daily pedagogy and allow our students to grow in a unique learning environment. Ona Siakimotu Executive Teacher Science, PTO Administrator _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ SECONDARY NEWS Mathematics Matters The 2016 school year is well underway and the membership of the Mathematics faculty has remained relatively constant. We do welcome Mr Peter Ringwood, who is taking one of our Year 8 classes at present. For Year 7 students, the results of recent assessments (along with those of next term) will provide some of the data which will allow us to place them into their substantive level at the end of the semester. From this year, Year 7 students will be placed in mixed classes (Standard Mathematics), with one class being selected to make up an Advanced Extended class. This will continue Page 4 of 12 through Year 8 next year, Year 9 in 2018 and Year 10 in 2019. This arrangement not only brings the Mathematics class levels into line with offerings provided in Science and English, but is also in line with the expectations of the authors of the Australian Curriculum and with modern pedagogical thought around streaming. As usual, there are a number of opportunities available for students to be provided with enrichment and extension in their studies of mathematics. Competitions, such as the Computational and Algorithmic Thinking competition (CAT, formerly known as the Informatics competition), the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC), the Mathematics Challenge and Enrichment programs (all conducted by the Australian Mathematics Trust), and the ICAS Mathematics Competition are open to all students in Years 7 – 10. The University of New South Wales Global competition (for Years 9 & 10) is also offered. This competition is an extremely difficult one and is not open to younger students. Entries for the CAT competition, which will be held on Tuesday 22 March, have now closed. We are currently inviting interested students to enter the Challenge and Enrichment programs. Details of these are available from Mr Babaei. Mr Babaei is also coordinating the entry of a team from Year 7 and 8 for the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematics Olympiad, which is held over five sessions between May and September. We will soon be advertising entry for the AMC and ICAS Maths, which will be held on July 28 and August 16 respectively. Students should listen carefully to the daily notices in Contact Groups for information about these activities. Most competitions have strict closing dates and we are unable to extend the dates advertised in the daily notices. I would like to thank each of the staff members involved in organising these events for volunteering their time and effort. Mathletics: An information session was held a few weeks ago to introduce parents of Year 7 students to the Mathletics program. For the low cost of $25 per student per year, students have access to this very useful source of extra practice and individualised tutoring. Please note that French Stream students do not need to participate in Mathletics and are therefore not required to pay the fee (although they may choose to do so, if they wish). Questions about Mathletics should be directed to Mr Wong. Calculators: all students in Years 8-10 should have a scientific calculator, (this means it should have buttons for sin, sin -1, σ, , etc.). Even with the new BYOD arrangements, it is the Education Directorate policy that other portable electronic devices, such as mobile telephones not be used as calculators. Telopea Park School supports this policy; please refer to our mobile telephone/electronic device protocol. Year 7 will be required to have a scientific calculator from Semester 2. Suitable brands include Casio, Sharp, Texas Instrument and HP. Some lower cost brands, such as those from Aldi are satisfactory, but tend not to be as durable. Please note that the Finance Office no longer carries stocks of scientific calculators for sale. Parents of Year 10 students in the English stream should also note that a graphics calculator is not required; purchase of such should be left until students begin college. Finally, we offer our congratulations to Sam Parkinson of Year 10, who has just been invited to participate in the Australian Informatics Olympiad Selection School at Macquarie University. This is a very prestigious invitation, as it may lead to Sam being selected for the Australian team competing at the International Olympiad for Informatics later this year. We wish Sam all the best. BAND NEWS The bands have already survived Boot Camp! On Tuesday 16 February our indomitable 70-piece Wind Ensemble participated in a full day of playing music and eating pizza. A massive repertoire of music was covered for the Canberra Show performance on Friday 26 February, AND a new band world record of 30 pizzas was devoured. (Eclipsing the previous record set by the Jazz band of 20 pizzas at the eisteddfod in 2014). The Year 7 bands are powering through a new chart each rehearsal and are ready to take on the world right now – a great achievement by our youngest members to have so much repertoire at standard prior to Year 7 camp. The 2016 Sydney trip is coming up in September and we are already booked in to play at the amazing Jenolan Caves as well as seeing My Fair Lady at the Opera House – a rare treat to be able to hear Sydney’s top pro muso’s at work! The France trip for 2017 is well underway. We are still awaiting clearance from DFAT, and our itinerary is coming together well; there will be a homestay element on tour (so we are going to have to brush up on our French!) A professional writer has been advising us on a musical presentation we are developing telling the Lost Digger’s story. We have commissioned a local professional composer to write some music especially for our band to take to our French (and Flemish) friends in VillersBretonneaux, Vignacourt and Belgium. Many thanks to the Telopea P & C for making this amazing project happen! The centenary of the infamous Passchaendale Offensive/s will take place in Sep / Oct 2017 and Telopea will be front and centre in some quite significant regional commemorations representing Australia in some unique community performances. There will be a World Premiere of the new works at a concert in term four this year here right at Telopea… watch this space! An exciting year!! PRIMARY NEWS The Canberra Day long weekend has just passed and I hope you have enjoyed the activities on offer, some free time or an extra break down the coast. The work and leisure balance is important for all of us. Being mid-term, routines are flowing smoothly and confidence with knowing the weekly timetable should be on display. Thank you for helping us with the little things to help students develop responsibility and independence. For example, students carrying their own bags, knowing it is music, library, sport, French or English, is important. Asking your child about the day and any important events should be part of the daily conversation. Some children will volunteer this more quickly than others but do encourage the asking and sharing. Checking the contents of the school bag is also part of this sharing. Generally, the Primary school sends notes home every Thursday but occasionally a note may come home on a different day. This brings me to the topic of excursion notes and any associated payments. We aim to be efficient with the administrative and provider deadlines. Paperwork sent home includes information and permission notes and any required payments. Your cooperation with action for due dates is vital in this process. Please read the due dates carefully and ensure to be on time. We cannot accept late returns and especially, on-the-day, returns. This will reduce last minute panic, anxiety and disappointment. Our students do benefit from enrichment opportunities. School Sporting Events Two of the main school carnivals have now taken place, the Swimming and Cross-Country. It was pleasing to see the high participation from all students. All the school carnivals run well due to the help from the Primary staff, secondary PE Faculty and Leadership students. On the day of each carnival, I am very grateful to the trusty band of parent volunteers and audience that give up time to help make the day an extra success. It is a pleasure working with you! The Swimming Carnival winning House for 2016 is Campbell! Well done everyone and an excellent job from all House Captains and Vice-Captains. Notes have been sent home. Please check the bags! Page 6 of 12 We were very weather lucky with the timing of the Cross—Country carnival. Students really gave it their best and it was great to hear the cheering from parents and students as runners came up the hill to the finish line. The Zone squad will be finalised this week and students will bring notes home soon. The Zone Cross-Country will be held very early in term 2 (Tuesday 3 rd May) so all the administration needs completing before end of this term. The winning House for 2016 Cross-Country is Throsby! Well done to this small but mighty house! Our House points have several steps as the student numbers vary greatly. The month of March brings us many opportunities to celebrate special events and cultural diversity; the French Film Festival, Francophonie Week, Harmony Day, Citizenship Ceremony, P&C Breakfast…we encourage you to celebrate with us and do ask your child about the events as they happen. Early Drop-Offs Supervision of K- 6 students commences at 8.30 am when gates are unlocked. If you need child care between 7.30 and 8.30 am, please make an online booking for the Before School Program. Breakfast is included in the cost. From 21 March, any unsupervised students who are found in the quad/playground will be moved into the program and parents will be invoiced. Thank you to those parents who wait with their children until 8.30am when a member of staff goes on duty. We value your support and communication along your child’s learning journey. Maria Magdic Executive Teacher Y3-6 ICAS Competition for Students in Years 3-6 The University of New South Wales is offering your child an opportunity to participate in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS). ICAS assessments have taken place annually in schools for over thirty years and across twenty countries. ICAS is an annual skills development assessment program in key areas of learning for students in years 3–12; assessments are available in English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Writing. A limited number of tests are also available for year 2 students. We have however, decided to run the testing program for students in years 3-6 only, based on our experience in 2015. Each individual test gathers performance information through a 30–60 minute supervised in-school test. Each test provides a continuous, independent and comprehensive record of a student’s performance, and maps their development over the full period of primary and secondary schooling. Achievement certificates are awarded to all students at a range of levels. Results are available to parents and students online; these online reports and analyses remain available indefinitely. ICAS reports indicate which questions were answered correctly and compare student performance to that of the other students tested. Teachers can also access the information. This year, the applications for the ICAS tests fall due during the ACT school holidays. All applications will therefore need to be returned to the school by Thursday 7 April. Payment must be made at the time of application.
