this term we have three international
experiences involving our students: the Band tour to France, the World Challenge Expedition to Malaysia and Borneo and the visit of our Year 5
exchange students from Noumea. International excursions and exchanges require extensive preparation and planning, often years in advance.
I would like to thank all the teachers, students and their parents for their commitment over a considerable period of time.
Ambassador’s Welcome
On Thursday morning, 31st July, we officially welcomed the Ambassador of France H.E. Mr Christophe Lecourtier. The Ambassador spoke at
the primary assembly, where we also farewelled Muryel Martin, our outgoing Conseillère Pédagogique. Ms Diane Joseph, Director-General of
the ACT Education and Training Directorate was also present. We look forward to working with the Ambassador during his time in Canberra.
New Staff
Two new French staff members have arrived just this week. Jillian Erin-Agot (EFS History Geography teacher) and Cécile Guigonnet. They look
forward to starting with their classes and attached to this edition of Telopea Topics is an introduction of a number of our new French staff.
These staff received a warm welcome from the P&C and were received at the French Embassy by the Cultural Counsellor, Eric Soulier on

Thursday 31 July. I would also like to congratulate and welcome Julian Dugas as the new
Conseiller Pédagogique in the primary school.

Highlights from Week 2
Last week we welcomed Corporal (Retired) Ben Roberts-Smith VC to the school. Mr Roberts-Smith spoke with our Year 9 students under the
close eye of the media. He was visiting our school as an ambassador for the Royal Australian Mint. In response to a series of probing questions
from our students, he spoke of having strong values in life and the importance of remembering the past as a guide to our future actions. Later
in the week our school captain, Peter Alliott, helped to launch the “ANZAC Spirit Prize for 2015” with Chief Minister Katy Gallagher and Dr
Brendan Nelson at the Australian War Memorial. Peter spoke with great clarity about his experiences in Turkey early this year. I encourage all
Year 9 and 10 students to enter and participate in this competition.
Communication with Telopea Park School/Lycée Franco-Australien de Canberra
I would like to take the opportunity to encourage you to communicate with the school from the beginning of the semester. Your child’s
teacher is the best place to start with a number of issues no matter how small. Executive teachers in the various faculties and Primary year
teams are also available. For broader issues Year Coordinators and our Student Services area may also be of assistance. Please feel free to
contact the Front Office and a message will be left for the appropriate staff member. Secondary parent-teacher interviews take place Tuesday
and Wednesday (23-24 September) Week 10, Term 3. Please mark these dates in your diary. This is your opportunity to discuss your child’s
progress. We use an online booking system to organise the bookings for these nights. More information will be provided in the coming Telopea
Topics.
Year 9 Personal Projects
Year 9 students have begun their Personal Projects this term and will be developing their projects each week during Enrichment. All Year 9
students should have met with their teacher mentors by the end of Week 3 to discuss their projects. Year 9 will be presenting their project
proposals at Year 9 Exhibitions in Week 9. Parents are invited to be part of this process by volunteering time to be members of a ‘Round Table’
evaluation panel. Notes will be sent home inviting you to be a panel member later in the term.
Elective Choices Years 7-9
Students from Years 7-9 will be making elective choices in Arts, Technology, PE and Humanities this term for next year. Information and
elective choices will be provided and completed by an online method this term. Specific information will be given out during special assemblies
this term. Please support your child in making an informed choice and ensure the online process is completed by the specified day.
Finally, a special mention Sam Parkinson, Year 8 was placed third in the Rostrum National Voice of Youth Junior competition. An excellent
achievement!

LE MOT DU PRINCIPAL ADJOINT
Les élèves ont déjà bien entamé le troisième trimestre et ont commencé le semestre avec un très bon comportement et une
réelle envie d’apprendre. Le week-end dernier, les correspondants de Grenoble sont repartis en France après un séjour de six
semaines en Australie. Cet échange est un programme important à Telopea et nous avons particulièrement apprécié le soutien
des parents et des enseignants ainsi que l’organisation de Patricia Blumstein. Nos élèves auront trois expériences internationales
à la fin de ce trimestre: le voyage de notre Orchestre en France, l’Expédition du World Challenge en Malaisie et Bornéo et la
visite des correspondants de Nouméa de nos élèves de CM1 . Les voyages à l’étranger et les échanges nécessitent un important
travail de préparation et d’organisation, très souvent quelques années à l’avance. Je tiens à remercier tous les enseignants, les
élèves et leurs parents pour leur grande implication qui s’inscrit dans la durée.
Bienvenue à l’Ambassadeur
Le jeudi 31 juillet au matin, nous avons officiellement souhaité la bienvenue à S.E
M. Christophe Lecourtier, le nouvel
Ambassadeur de France en Australie. Monsieur l’Ambassadeur a parlé aux enfants lors de cette assemblée du Primaire spéciale
au cours de laquelle nous avons également dit au revoir à Muryel Martin, notre Conseillère Pédagogique qui prend sa retraite. Ms
Diane Joseph, Directrice Générale du Département de l’Education de l’A.C.T, était également présente. Nous sommes ravis de
travailler avec M. Lecourtier lors de son séjour ici à Canberra.
Nouveaux enseignants
Deux nouveaux enseignants français sont arrivés cette semaine. Il s’agit de Jillian Erin Agot (Histoire-Géographie) et Cécile
Guigonnet (Professeur des Ecoles). Elles sont impatientes de commencer à travailler avec leurs élèves. Une présentation de nos
nouveaux enseignants français est jointe à cette édition du Telopea Topics. Ils ont reçu un accueil chaleureux du P&C et

Monsieur Eric Soulier, le Conseiller Culturel, les a reçus à l’Ambassade de France le jeudi 31 juillet dernier. Je voudrais
également féliciter et accueillir Julien Dugas, notre nouveau Conseiller Pédagogique pour le Primaire.
Les temps forts de la Semaine 2
La semaine dernière nous avons reçu à l’école le Caporal (à la retraite) Ben Roberts-Smith VC. Mr Roberts-Smith s’est entretenu
avec nos élèves de Year 9 sous l’œil attentif des journalistes. Il visitait l’école en tant qu’ambassadeur de la Monnaie Royale
australienne. Répondant aux questions pertinentes de nos élèves, il a expliqué avoir dans la vie des valeurs fortes et a rappelé
l’importance de savoir se souvenir du passé comme guide de nos actions futures. Plus tard dans la semaine, notre School

Responsables de niveau et la Vie Scolaire peuvent également vous aider. N’hésitez pas à contacter le Front Office qui
transmettra votre message à la personne concernée. Les réunions parents-professeurs auront lieu les mardi 23 et mercredi 24
septembre (Semaine 10 du troisième trimestre). Merci de noter ces dates dans vos agendas. Vous aurez ainsi l’occasion de
discuter avec les professeurs des progrès de votre enfant. Le système de réservation en ligne sera utilisé pour l’organisation des

Les Projets Personnels en classe de Year 9
Les élèves de Year 9 ont commencé leurs Projets Personnels ce trimestre et les développeront lors de chaque séance
hebdomadaire d’Enrichment. Tous les élèves de Year 9 devront avoir rencontré leur tuteur d’ici à la fin de la Semaine 3 pour
discuter de leur projet. Ils présenteront leurs propositions de projets lors des Expositions de Year 9 en Semaine 9. En tant que
parents, vous êtes invités à faire partie du processus en acceptant de participer au suivi et à l’évaluation des élèves. Vous
recevrez ultérieurement un courrier vous invitant à être membre du comité d’évaluation.
Choix des options en Year 7-9
Les élèves de Year 7 à 9 vont, au cours de ce trimestre, effectuer leurs choix d’options en Arts, Technologie, EPS et HistoireGéographie pour l’année prochaine. Les élèves recevront des informations sur les options et valideront leurs choix en ligne ce
trimestre. Des informations précises seront données lors des assemblées ce trimestre. Nous vous invitons à aider votre enfant à
faire un choix éclairé et à vous assurer que l’inscription en ligne est faite à la date demandée.
Enfin, je veux mentionner tout particulièrement Sam Parkinson en Year 8 qui s’est classé troisième au Concours d’éloquence
Rostrum National Voice of Youth Junior competition. Un excellent résultat!

Canteen News
Thankyou to all the parents who have read our new term 3, 2014 canteen menu. Just a reminder to all families that this new
menu saw some popular lunch options discontinued. The ACT government require the canteen to follow the National School
Canteen Guidelines as endorsed by Nutrition Australia. This means hot dogs, nachos, quiche and spinach ricotta rolls from our
old menu are no longer suitable. If you previously ordered these dishes, please consult the attached menu and select a different
option from now on. The canteen staff are committed to delivering affordable lunch options that fall well within these guidelines.

Bonjour à tous,
Je m’appelle Tatiana TORRES et j’ai en charge l’enseignement en français en classe de CM2.3
et de l’EPS des classes du primaire jusqu’à la Terminale.
Après des études de STAPS (Sciences et Technique des Activités Physiques et Sportives), j’ai
passé le concours d’enseignement de Professeur des Ecoles en région parisienne où j’ai par la
suite travaillé trois ans au primaire.
J’ai ensuite continué ma carrière au Lycée Français Théodore Monod en Mauritanie. J’y ai passé
4 ans et ai pu ainsi acquérir une première expérience très enrichissante de l’enseignement
français à l’étranger.
Je suis aujourd’hui ravie d’être à Canberra et d’avoir la chance d’intégrer un établissement tel
que Telopea Park.
Hello Everyone,
My name is Tatiana, and I will be taking up the position of PE and sports coordinator here at Telopea and also at Narrabundah
College – this will include, Primary, Secondary and College students. I will also be the French teacher for 5.3.
After completing my studies at STAPS – Science and Techniques of Physical and Sporting Activities – I studied in Paris to become
a qualified teacher and subsequently taught in a Primary school there for 3 years.
I then moved to a high school - the Lycée Français Théodore Monod which is in Mauritania. I taught there for 4 years, and found
this, my first experience of teaching overseas, to be a very fulfilling and interesting one.
I am very pleased to be here in Canberra, and to have the opportunity to work in the bilingual system of Telopea.

Bonjour, Je m’appelle Elsa Goursolle et depuis lundi 28 Juillet j’ai le plaisir d’enseigner le Français et
l’Histoire- Géographie aux deux classes de Sixième à Telopea Park School.
Je ne suis pas tout à fait nouvelle à Telopea Park School car j’ai eu la chance de travailler avec les
classes de 5e, 4e et 2nde au premier semestre de cette année. Aussi, j’avais déjà eu l’occasion de
découvrir cette fantastique école lors de mes stages d’enseignement pour mon Graduate Diploma in
Education à l’Université de Canberra.
Je viens de Bordeaux, mais je me suis installée à Canberra en 2009, ville d’origine de mon mari.
J’apprécie énormément cette ville que je continue d'explorer le week-end, à vélo. Depuis que je
suis en Australie, j'ai aussi pu découvrir plusieurs endroits de ce magnifique pays, je voudrais
maintenant visiter le centre du pays.
J'ai hâte de vous rencontrer et de discuter avec vous très prochainement.

My name is Elsa Goursolle and I am very excited to be working with the Year 6 classes this semester. Ahead lies an exciting
semester of discoveries and excitement.
I am not brand new at Telopea Park School as I was teaching French and History-Geography in the high-school during the first
semester of this year. Also, I was lucky enough to discover this school while studying my Graduate Diploma in Education at the
University of Canberra.
I am often asked about why I chose to be a teacher. The best reason I can give is, “I teach so I can see the moment students
have that ‘ah’ moment, where something has clicked and a student understands. As well as when a student displays joy in
discovery or experiencing a new activity”.
A little about me: I come from Bordeaux but I have been living in Canberra since 2009. I love riding my bike on the weekend
but I also enjoy trying new sports and activities like scuba diving that I discovered 2 years ago.
I am looking forward to meeting more of you very soon.

famille et moi sommes arrivés au mois de juillet à Canberra, nous venons du sud de la France

Professeur certifiée de l'Education Nationale depuis maintenant 11 ans, je suis originaire de
Martinique où j'ai commencé à exercer en collège puis en lycée général et technologique. J'ai
ensuite profité d'un programme d'échange, le programme Jules Verne, pour partir découvrir
l'univers éducatif américain dans un lycée international de Floride.
J'ai ensuite évolué au sein de cet établissement américain jusqu'à devenir la responsable du
programme français et la chef de centre d'examens pour l'ensemble de la Floride du sud. J'ai
enseigné en collège et en lycée, en histoire-géographie, dans le programme français comme
américain. Je me suis donc forgée une solide expérience de 5 ans dans cet univers international.
J'ai toujours eu en charge, depuis le début de ma carrière, des classes d'examens et j'espère
cette année encore pouvoir mettre toute cette expérience et ma motivation au service de la
réussite de vos enfants.
Je suis entièrement disponible pour mes élèves et privilégie le dialogue et le travail de concert avec eux et leurs parents.

Certified teacher from the French Ministry of Education since 11 years, I'm from Martinique where I started to teach in middle
school then high school. I was enrolled in an exchange program, the Jules Verne program, to discover the American system of
education in an international school of Florida.

high school, in French and American program. I stayed 5 years in this international universe. I always had the pleasure of

Student Services Snippets

On Friday 15th August at 8.00am we have our Term 3 Health Promoting Schools Committee Meeting. If you would like
to be involved in this, or would like more information, please don’t hesitate to contact me

Action Buses have announced changes to the schools bus service, commencing on the 1st September. Please read the
attached letter, or visit the ACTION website for more information: www.action.act.gov.au

A reminder that all students are expected to wear the school dress code. Failure to comply may result in students
losing the privilege of attending excursions, accessing the oval during breaks, and use of microwave/hot water in
Student Services.
•
Teachers provide early morning supervision for Secondary Students from 8.15am. Parents are asked not to drop off
their children before this time.
•
There is a large quantity of lost property in Secondary Student Services. All un-named clothing will be sent to charity
by the end of Week 4. Please ask your child to check lost property for any missing items before then.
A word from our Secondary Youth Worker, Noni See
As the youth worker at Telopea Park School, I'm always inspired by the vast number of insightful, engaging, and diverse
students with whom I spend my day. I always enjoy finding new ways, and improving old ones, to cultivate a sense of wellbeing
and belonging in the school, and love the willingness of Telopeans to participate in such endeavours.
Term 3 sees the return of a variety of programs designed to foster the personal wellbeing and engagement of all students.
Homework group remains on Wednesday afternoons, where students are supported in completing school tasks while developing
independent study skills, while our ever-popular Breakfast Club (available to all students) is back on Thursday mornings. In
addition, targeted programs such as the Junction Youth Health Group, Creative Self-Writing, Young Carers, PCYC (police and
citizens Youth Club), Tuggeranong Arts Messengers Program, and personal development workshops will continue to offer
valuable opportunities to our students throughout the term. The variety of student-led lunch-time activity groups around
interests such as anime, card-games, chess, improvisational theatre, and singing are being offered once more on a weekly basis,
with new activities to be made available as the term progresses. It’s an exciting term ahead, and I'm looking forward to
continuing to reinforce a positive school culture in which all students feel valued through these, and many more opportunities,
which will be rolling out in the weeks to come, so students are encouraged to stay tuned with the daily PC notices for more
details!

PRIMARY NEWS
C'est avec plaisir que j'écris ce premier article pour Telopea Topics. Je succède à Muryel Martin au poste de Conseiller Pédagogique, et suis très
heureux d’occuper désormais ces fonctions et de pouvoir participer à l’animation de la dynamique équipe du primaire.
De nombreux parents me connaissent déjà : je suis arrivé en septembre 2012 et ai enseigné en CM2 et 6º. Durant cette période, j’ai également
animé le Forum Bilingue de l’établissement, et continuerai à promouvoir le bilinguisme dans notre école si particulière. Auparavant, j’ai occupé
diverses fonctions dans le réseau AEFE, notamment directeur d’école au Sénégal et au Cap-Vert.
Nouvel Ambassadeur de France en Australie
Le jeudi 31 juillet, nous avons eu la visite de Son Excellence M Christophe Lecourtier, nouvel Ambassadeur de France en Australie, accompagné
de M Eric Soulier, Conseiller de Coopération et d'Action Culturelle, et de Mme Diane Joseph, Directrice Générale du Département de
l'Education de l'ACT. Après une visite des classes de primaire et une assemblée spéciale, cette délégation a ensuite visité la partie secondaire
de l'établissement. Monsieur l'Ambassadeur a particulièrement apprécié l'habileté de nos élèves à passer d'une langue à l'autre, ainsi que les
nombreux sourires qui ont ponctué sa visite.

les parents de CM2.3 le mardi 5 août.
Vincent Boutreau, qui intervient en classe de CE2.3 et CM1.3. Vincent a rencontré les parents des élèves concernés le mardi 29
juillet.
Elsa Goursolle qui enseignait déjà à Telopea dans le secondaire, prendra en charge le français, l'histoire-géographie et l'EPS en classe
de sixième. Elsa a rencontré les parents des élèves de sixième le mardi 5 août.
Et Cécile Guigonnet, qui revient au Lycée franco-australien de Canberra après quelques années passées en France, et qui prendra ses
fonctions cette semaine et remplacera bientôt Aurore Severac durant son congé maternité en classe de Grande Section 2.
Nous avons également le plaisir d’accueillir à nouveau Jennie Jordan et Stephanie Ritchard qui interviennent toutes les deux en CE2.1 et 2,
ainsi que Michael Ellis en CM2.1 et 2.
No Waste Wednesday
La première édition de “Waste Free Friday", qui s'inscrit dans le projet "Freshfood Tastes" du gouvernement de l'ACT visant à promouvoir une
nourriture équilibrée, a été un grand succès et de nombreuses familles ont réussi à concocter de délicieux déjeuners sans aucun emballage.
Bravo et merci pour votre participation!
Nous vous encourageons à continuer ces efforts et à diminuer la quantité de déchets et emballages dans les boîtes à déjeuner de vos enfants.
Nous travaillons par ailleurs avec la cantine pour réduire les emballages.
Par ailleurs, nous attirons votre attention sur le fait que la cantine vend des boissons en cannette dont les bords tranchants peuvent s'avérer
dangereux pour les plus jeunes.
Hats On day
Il fait encore froid, mais les rayons du soleil commencent à retrouver leur force. L'Australian Cancer Council conseille de prendre toutes les
mesures nécessaires pour protéger sa peau. Pour cette raison, nous demandons aux élèves de porter à nouveau un chapeau depuis le 1er
août.
Sorties scolaires
Tout au long de l'année, de nombreuses sorties scolaires sont organisées. Ces moments privilégiés d'enseignement s'inscrivent invariablement
dans des projets éducatifs qui font sens pour les élèves. Comme vous le savez, certaines sorties ont un coût. Aussi, afin de garantir la
participation de tous les élèves, nous vous demandons de bien tenir compte du délai de paiement indiqué sur le formulaire d'information de la
sortie. En cas de difficulté financière, vous êtes invités à prendre contact avec Kerrie Blain.
Échange avec Noumea
Dans trois semaines maintenant nous aurons le plaisir d'accueillir 19 élèves de CM2 de l'Ecole Frédéric Surleau de Nouméa dans le cadre de
l'échange qui nous lie à cette école. Le programme de leur séjour à Canberra sera bien rempli et combinera de nombreuses visites (Questacon,
Australian National Museum, National Zoo, ...) ainsi que des moments en classe. Une visite commune de l'Australian War Memorial, aura lieu
avec tous les élèves de CM2, dans le cadre des commémorations de la Première Guerre Mondiale. Nous nous réjouissons de cette
collaboration. Ce sera ensuite au tour de nos élèves de s'envoler pour la Nouvelle Calédonie, du 10 au 19 septembre.

Les élèves de sixième continuent le programme Méli-Mélo sur CMS Radio, 91.1 FM. Nous vous encourageons à les écouter chaque mercredi
entre 16h et 17h.
Réunion d’informations sur le secondaire pour les parents d’élèves de CM2
L’année de sixième est la première année de l’école secondaire dans le système scolaire français, et elle s’accompagne de nombreux
changements. Afin de mieux préparer nos élèves pour cette importante étape dans leur scolarité, nous proposons une session d’information à
destination des familles des élèves de CM2 le mardi 19 août à 17h15 dans la bibliothèque du primaire.
Modernisation du réseau de bus ACTION

A partir du 1 septembre, le réseau de bus ACTION subira quelques modifications en vue d’améliorer le service rendu aux voyageurs. Cela
inclut également les bus scolaires : certaines lignes seront inchangées, mais d’autres seront modifiées. Une note vous parviendra
prochainement afin d’exposer ces changements.
PRIMARY NEWS
I am very pleased to be writing this, my very first article, for Telopea Topics. As successor to Muryel Martin, I will be taking on the duties of the
Conseiller Pedagogique, and am looking forward to working with the Primary team.
Many parents will already know me; since my arrival in September 2012 I have taught both Year 5 and Year 6 classes. I have also been working
on the school’s “Bilingual Forum”, and will continue to promote bilingualism in our very special school. Previous to my posting in Australia, I
have held several different positions within the AEFE schools network, and have been appointed as the Director of schools in both Senegal and
Cape-Verde.
New French Ambassador to Australia
His Excellency Mr Christophe Lecourtier the new French Ambassador, along with Mr Eric Soulier (the Advisor for Cooperation and Cultural

Action) and Mrs Diane Joseph the Director General of the ACT Education and Training Directorate, visited our school on Thursday 31 July. The
Ambassador’s visit included a tour of the Primary and Secondary schools as well as attending a special assembly in the Primary school. He was
impressed by the students’ ability to transition from French to English with such ease, and also commented on the large number of smiles he
had the pleasure of seeing during his visit.
New Teachers
We are delighted to welcome the following French teachers, who will present themselves further, in this edition of Telopea Topics:

Tatiana Torres, French teacher for 5.3 and also the Sports teacher, will be working with students from Year 2 to Year 12. Tatiana met
the parents of students in her 5.3 class on Tuesday 5th August.
Vincent Boutraud, will be the French Teacher for both 3.3 and 4.3. Vincent has also already met the new students and their parents
during an information night on 29th July.
Elsa Goursolle who has been teaching in the Secondary school, is now the French, History and Geography and PE teacher for both
Year 6 classes. Elsa met her new students and their parents on 5th August.
Finally, Cécile Guigonnet will be returning to Telopea Park School after spending the last few years in France. She will be taking the
K2 class of Aurore Severac who will be on maternity leave.
We are also very pleased to be welcoming back Stephanie Ritchard and Jennie Jordan who will be working with 3.1 and 3.2 respectively. And
finally, Michael Ellis will be the English teacher for 5.1 and 5.2 during Trish Connor’s long service leave.

No Waste Friday
The school’s first “Waste Free Friday", which is part of the ACT government’s "Freshfood Tastes" initiative, was a success. Its aim is to promote
a balanced diet. Many families were able to provide delicious and nutritious lunches without any packaging. Well done and thank you for your
participation in this initiative!
We encourage the whole school community to continue providing these types of lunches, in order to reduce the amount of packaging and
waste within the school. On a related note, the school would like all families to be aware that the canteen sells fizzy drinks in metal cans, which
can be potentially dangerous for the younger students.
Hats On day
It is still quite chilly during the day, but the sun’s UV rays are becoming more powerful. The Australian Cancer Council, advises that we do as

much as possible in order to protect our skin. For this reason, all students are asked to wear a hat from the 1 August.
School Excursions
Many excursions are organised throughout the year. These experiences enable students and teachers alike to approach learning in a new way
and work on educational projects together. As you are aware, many excursions have a cost associated with them. So that all students may be
included in these excursions we ask that you please read the information letters carefully, noting the due date for permission slips and
payment. If you require financial assistance, please contact the Principal, Mrs Kerrie Blain.
Noumea Exchange Programme
In three weeks, we will be welcoming 19 Year 5 students from the Frédéric Surleau school in Noumea. Their busy itinerary whilst in Canberra
will include some class time with their billets as well as visits to Questacon, the National Museum, the Zoo and Aquarium amongst others.
Together, the Canberran and Noumean Year 5 students will visit the Australian War Memorial to commemorate the First World War. We are
excited about this collaborative work. Our students will then be on their way to Noumea, where they will stay with their new friends between
the 10th and 19th of September.

Information Meeting about French Secondary studies for Year 5 parents
Year 6 is the first year of Secondary studies in the French schooling system, and it implies a lot of changes. In order to better prepare our

students to this important moment in their schooling, we propose an information session for Year 5 families on Tuesday 19 August at 5:15pm
in the Primary Library.
ACTION’s New School Services Network
Begiining on 1st September, the ACTION bus network will get through some changes in order to offer the best experience for their customers.
It will include the school bus as well : some services won’t be affected, but some other will be modified. A note will go home soon explaining
these changes.

be won for the projects with the leading number of votes!
