Going into French II or IIA Please choose at least three of the following activities to complete before classes begin in August. There are many different ones and I hope that you will consider doing a variety of activities. 1. Watch an episode of “Photo Roman” that we did not watch in class. You can access them via the Supersite. Write a brief summary of what the episode was about. What new cultural practices did you learn about? Did you learn any new vocabulary or grammar structures? 2. Collect three newspaper or magazine articles about France or other French-­‐speaking places These may be in English, but if they are in French, even better! They may be political, historical or cultural, almost anything goes. What is important is that you learn something from having read the article. Write a brief (one quarter to one half page) summary to share at the beginning of the year. 3. Write a letter or email introducing yourself to a potential French host family Talk about yourself, your family, likes and dislikes, where you live, school, etc. Describe some family members and some of your friends using physical and personality adjectives. Also be prepared to present this orally to the class. Perhaps you would want to consider videotaping it. 4. Write a short paragraph describing what you did this summer Be prepared to present orally to the class 5. Make sure to provide evidence when noted. Speaking (Take a video or picture of yourself doing one of the activities) 1. Go to a French restaurant and order in French. Some places you can speak French in are Paris 66, Crepes Parisiennes, La Gourmandine Bakery, Café du Jour, etc. 2. Converse with someone on vacation who speaks French. 3. Have a spontaneous French conversation with a friend. Listening 1. Go to www.Lyricstraining.com, pick a song or two, and practice filling in the lyrics. 2. Watch a movie in French with English subtitles and write a brief summary of it in French. 3. Listen to a beginner’s French Podcast and write a brief summary of it in English. Reading 1. Read a children’s book in French. 2. Read a newspaper or magazine articles about France or other French-­‐speaking places (preferably in French). Write a summary about what you read. 3. Read a poem in French and summarize the overall meaning of the poem. Writing (In French) 1. On a postcard, introduce yourself and talk about your summer (use the passé composé and imparfait). 2. Write about your daily routine over the summer (use reflexive verbs and adverbs). Culture 1. Find a product label that is in French and bring it in. 2. Find a French recipe and try making it. Take a picture of yourself. 3. Listen to a French musician and bring in the song for us to listen to. 4. Read about an important artist or writer. Be prepared to share some facts with the class. Going into French IV Advanced or French V AP Pour Les Étudiants qui suivront le Français IV Avancé ou le Français V AP: Pendant les deux ou trois semaines avant la rentrée des classes (le 27 août), faites une des suivantes suggestions et soyez préparé(e) à en faire une présentation de trois minutes à la classe. Vous pouvez consulter quelques notes pendant la présentation; vous êtes interdit de LIRE un rapport que vous avez préparé. Votre présentation doit être accompagnée de quelque chose de visuel, soit à l’ordinateur ou un dessin qui symbolise votre présentation. Montrez que vous n’avez pas perdu votre capacité de parler bien le français. Les élèves qui commenceront le Français V AP devraient montrer qu’ils sont plus avancés que les élèves qui commenceront le Français IV Avancé. 1. Parlez pendant trois minutes de ce que vous avez fait pendant l’été, du temps qu’il faisait pendant vos activités, où vous étiez, etc. Indiquez aussi qui d’autre(s) a/ont aussi participé avec vous dans vos activités. Avez-­‐vous fait la connaissance de nouveaux amis? Comment étaient-­‐
ils? Elaborez autant que possible l’histoire de votre été pour montrer que vous pouvez vous exprimer bien en français. Partagez aussi quelques photos de l’expérience ou un dessin qui symbolise l’expérience. Expliquez les photos ou le dessin à la classe. Vous pouvez avoir quelques notes, mais il est interdit de simplement lire un rapport écrit. 2. En trois minutes détaillez trois buts que vous avez pour cette année-­‐ci dans le Français IV Avancé ou le Français V AP. Faites un dessin qui symbolise les trois buts et expliquez le dessin à la classe. 3. Regardez un vidéo ou podcast produit en France ou dans un pays francophone (en français bien sûr) des actualités qui se passent à quelque moment pendant les deux semaines avant la rentrée. Parlez pendant trois minutes de ce que vous avez vu et de ce que vous avez appris de cette émission. Aussi, montrez le vidéo ou podcast à la classe. 4. Décidez où en France ou dans un autre pays francophone vous voudriez habiter. Recherchez cette ville ou village; montrez des photos de cet endroit à la classe et indiquez pourquoi vous l’avez choisi. Montrez une carte aussi qui indique où se trouve cet endroit. Parlez pendant trois minutes. 5. Imaginez des vacances où vous visiterez un endroit où la langue parlé c’est le français. Cela pourrait être en France ou dans un autre pays/région francophone. Montrez des photos de cet endroit à la classe et une carte qui indique où se trouve cet endroit; indiquez pourquoi vous avez choisi cet endroit et ce que vous ferez quand vous serez là. Parlez pendant trois minutes.
