Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein wants greater transparency in FIFA

Well, I’m a candidate, hopefully, for the world. I think that for our region (that) football is very, very
important. It’s growing. It’s developing both in men’s and women’s football. We’re very happy that we
will be hosting the ‘17 Women’s World Cup next year. So there’s so much potential out there. But
again, I think that if we bring dignity back to our national associations and give them the ability to really
move, then the sky’s really the limit for what we can do.
I mean transparency is the word often used now, and now it needs to be implemented. And I would
definitely want to guaranty that that happens. We should have nothing to hide. It’s the world’s most
popular sport and it belongs to the world as a whole. We should restore confidence in this organization.
As much as football is loved around the world, unfortunately, the reputation is the opposite. And that will
be only to the benefit of the sport. So, for sure, that is key in the future of FIFA
There are many initiatives out there. We’ve had, through unfortunate circumstances, to deal with
refugees, to use football as a tool to bring them together, to give them something enjoyable, on one hand,
but to also give them a sense of belonging and community, and to educate them through the use of
football about dangers such as mine risk and so on.
There are many other initiatives. For example, in Cambodia, where we worked with an NGO to help girls
who are victims of trafficking. I believe (that) now they compose the national team of Cambodia for
women. So there are so many projects out there and potential to help with things. And that’s the main
reason why we created the Asian Football Development Project, and we’ll see how it goes in the future.
Hopefully, it should be something that could be maybe even global.
