Contenu: Many people have specific ideas about the different ways women and men speak. For example, women are supposedly more polite than men, they talk and gossip more than men, they use mitigators (sort of, I think) and qualifiers (really wonderful, so fantastic) more often than men, to name a few. Popular culture is rife with such stereotypes about language and gender differences in general, as featured in Gray’s bestselling book Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus. This seminar explores the relationship between language and gender, reflecting nearly 40 years of linguistic scholarship on the topic. Rather than present a particular point of view, the seminar offers a comprehensive overview of the topic from variety of perspectives. Forme de l'évaluation: A short oral presentation and a written exam. Documentation: Reading material for the sessions, and additional course information will be made available on Claroline.
