Période d'enseignement:
• Semestre Automne
Equipe enseignante:
Margaret Tudeau-Clayton
Objectifs:
To develop students' skills in making arguments and analysing texts; to increase their knowledge and appreciation of Shakespeare as well as of
the genre of comedy.
Contenu:
This seminar will explore Shakespearean comedies as essays in a genre, in the sense that the word essay had for Shakespeare and his
contemporaries, namely experiment. Within a framework of Renaissance as well as modern theories of the genre, and with the purposes(s) of
comedy as our guiding idea, we will study first, some early attempts, then, an achieved example of festive comedy; next, Shakespeare's one
essay in citizen comedy; finally, one of the so-called problem comedies and one of the so-called romances. We will discuss how the form as
well as recurrent themes - notably gender and generational relations - are taken up and reworked. With the help of critical essays we will
analyse these developments from various theoretical and historical perspectives.
Forme de l'évaluation:
Internal evaluation: regular attendance; active participation (including group work); one oral presentation; one long essay (16-20 pages), or two
shorter essays (8-10 pages).
Documentation:
We will study the following plays: The Taming of The Shrew (extracts); Two Gentlemen of Verona (extracts); The Comedy of Errors (extracts); A
Midsummer Night's Dream; The Merry Wives of Windsor (extracts); All's Well that Ends Well; The Winter's Tale.
The critical essays will be available on claroline.
