Objectifs:
Students will learn how to approach medieval English texts from both a linguistic and literary angle. They will acquire basic translation and
interpretation skills that help them prepare for the oral exam.
Contenu:
This lecture course will give students an overview of the history of the English language, literature and culture from the beginnings (c. 500) to
the decline of the medieval period (c. 1580). Time will be reserved for workshops where students learn how to read, translate and interpret
excerpts from both Old and Middle English texts. Students should read the set texts in advance (in translation) as well as some extra texts that
figure on the reading list.
