Période d'enseignement:
• Semestre Automne
Equipe enseignante:
TUDEAU-CLAYTON Margaret
Objectifs:
This seminar aims to highlight the impact of Shakesperean practice on the form as well as the content of tragedy and to explore the relation of
this development of the genre to the context of ideological, political and cultural conflict in early modern England. We will look, first, at how
Shakespeare's Hamlet reshapes - and problematises - the tragedy of revenge, especially in relation to Thomas Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy and
Christopher Marlowe's The Tragedy of Dido; then, at how John Ford's Tis Pity She's a Whore reshapes - and problematises - the tragedy of
love, especially in relation to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet which, for Ford, a generation after it was first produced, was already 'out of date'.
