The Silver Rose La rose d` argent
The Silver Rose La rose d‘ argent École Bouchesèche, Hoenheim, France 18 In the heart of the Vosges mountains, in Sainte Marie aux Mines, lived an entire nation of dwarves. They had built an underground city of dazzlingly beauty. This city of crystal and silver had a permanent door between two worlds. The dwarves dug under the earth and lived alongside men, whom they taught the art of mining, blacksmithing and silversmithing. Despite the good relations between humans and dwarves, scepticism and distrust began to rise in the men’s hearts. The number of quarrels, conflicts and jealousies increased. One day, the King of Silberzwergen (silver dwarves) left the mines to watch the moonlight in the human world. Near a little river, he saw a young woman. She was the daughter of a rich miner and had just come out of the convent where nuns had raised her. The young lady was beautiful, as rarely seen, and the King of the Dwarves fell crazy in love. He went to her and confided his love to her, but she was frightened by seeing this little creature. She thought it was one of those demons the nuns had told her about. She ran away without saying any word. The King of the Dwarves was enchanted with a great passion for the lady. He repeatedly tried to charm her and overwhelm her with beautiful presents. She was always scared and always ran away. Still crazy in love, the King of the Dwarves did not know what to do. He finally gave the woman the most wonderful treasure that he had, the Silver Rose. It was a unique object with great power, made by the elders and the Goddess of the Moon. The Silver Rose rested in the heart of the underground city. It was the object that connected the two worlds with its magic. But, once again, the girl refused the dwarf’s advances. She ran away shouting hurtful words to the king who held out the rose to her in a pleading gesture. As she ran, a terrible accident happened to her. She stumbled on a tree root in the darkness of the night and fell into the river but, because she couldn‘t swim, she drowned. The King of the Dwarves was very distressed when he heard about the girl‘s drowning. He went back into the mountain and made all the mines’ shafts crash down behind him. Due to his magical powers, the miners of the Valley of Sainte Marie aux Mines couldn‘t find the veins of silver and gold in the mountains anymore. The king, still unhappy, took the Silver Rose and went far away to the Eastern Waldwelt “World of the Forests”. 20 Le roi des nains éprouva un immense chagrin après avoir appris la noyade de la jeune fille. This sad story made a deep impression on the people of the Waldwelt. Hearing it, they felt it was no longer possible to keep relationships with human beings that had rejected them. Everywhere, fairies, elves and dwarves disappeared little by little and left their mark only through all kinds of legends and stories. The King of the Dwarves, meanwhile, travelled to his native country in the mountains that tower above La Licorne (Unicorn) castle and the Forest of Darkness. There, he offered the Silver Rose as a present to the Unicorn Lady and the Queen of the Elves agreed to watch over the treasure. She took the Silver Rose, however, and threw it into the deep well of her residence. The unfortunate dwarf went back to his beloved mountains and died of grief. 21
