Behavioral Ecology of coastal Sharks in Reunion Island
Project ECORECO Behavioral Ecology of coastal Sharks in Reunion Island MARBEC REPRESENTATIVE OBJECTIVES Marc SORIA IRD [email protected] Sébastien JAQUEMET University of Reunion island (UMR Entropie) sebastien.jaquemet@ univ-reunion.fr Marc SORIA IRD, La Réunion [email protected] The aim of this project is to study the biology, the trophic and behavioral ecology and the genetic of two species of coastal sharks in Reunion Island, the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) and the bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas) in order to better understand the part of these species within the ecosystem. A behaviourial approach is proposed to study the functional relationships between these predators, their prey and the physical environment. The protocol consists in tracking sharks equipped with an acoustic tag, a video camera and a accelerometer and record simultaneously the environmental conditions around the fish. The genetic diversity of the populations will be described by means of various genetic markers.
