The informal “causettes” at the Bordeaux Brasserie, opposite the Place Charles de Gaulle car
park, take place on the first Wednesday of every month. The times have been chosen so
that you can drop in between trips to the market and to the FGB library. They are a great
way to keep in touch with old friends, meet new ones and, of course, practise your language
skills! So please come along; everyone is welcome.

URGENT APPEAL
Following recent articles about the need to find replacements for the Librarian and Editor’s
roles, it now time to place an ‘urgent appeal’ in the Bulletin as 2016 will be the last year that I
will be able to continue in these roles. It is now essential that there is someone else in place
by the end of this year, during which time, I will be able to go through the process of each
role. No experience for the Librarian is necessary as full training will be given. For the Editor‘s
position, a knowledge of how to use a publishing programme (currently Microsoft Office
Publisher 2007) is required. The Editor is not expected to write the articles and there are
other members who provide the necessary translations. Again, full training will be given. For
further information, please contact: Margaret York Tel: 05.65.22.96.37 or
email: [email protected] OR [email protected]
APPEL URGENT

BIBLIOTHEQUE NEWS
We are very pleased to welcome two new volunteers to our number, Sue Shilvock and Dominique Lahouze. Dominique is a new
member who saw our appeal and has joined so that she could become a volunteer. No doubt, she will benefit in other ways by being
a member of FGB. Welcome and thank you ladies. We continue to hope that our user numbers will increase – it can be lonely on the
mornings when we have no visitors! For those members who do borrow, we thank you for your continued support. So far this year,
207 books have been borrowed and 81 books have been added to the shelves. Also added are a number of French exercise and text
books which can be acquired for a small donation – please give generously so that we can continue to add quality and up-to-date
books to the Library. Below are reviews of the new books being added to our shelves in May 2016.
JUST SOME OF OUR NEW BOOKS FOR MAY
Zoo
James Patterson & Michael Ledwidge
All over the world, ferocious, cunning, co-ordinated animal attacks are crippling entire cities and threatening humankind. Jackson Oz,
a biologist, watches the escalating events with an increasing sense of dread. He races to warn world leaders before it's too late.
The Snow Child
Eowyn Ivey (New author to our selves)
1920's Alaska. Jack and Mabel have staked everything on a fresh start in a remote homestead, but Mabel is haunted by the baby she
lost many years before. When a little girl appears mysteriously on their land, each is filled with wonder and foreboding: A bewitching
tale of heartbreak and hope. A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
Death in the West Wind
Deryn Lake (New author to our selves)
1759. The apothecary John Rawlings investigates the death of Juliana van Guylder and disappearance of her brother. Suspects
include the mysterious Society of Angels, and a lone highwayman, A gripping historical murder that chills to the bone. Meticulously
researched, this series brings the past to life.
Victims
Jonathan Kellerman
Alex Delaware returns in this ingenious and breathtakingly good psychological thriller. One look at the victim's apartment is enough
for Milo Sturgis to summon The Crime Reader. But even his skills may be stymied when more slayings occur, with no apparent
connection. This one will haunt his waking life.
Gentlemen and Players
Joanne Harris
At St Oswald's school in the north of England, a new year has just begun and for the staff and boys a wind of unwelcome change is
blowing. Suits, paperwork and IT rule the world. Beneath the everyday petty disputes a darker undercurrent stirs and a bitter grudge
is about to erupt. A gripping psychological thriller.
The Silkworm
Robert Galbraith
Novelist Owen Quine has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen portraits of almost everyone he knows. When he is
found brutally murdered in bizarre circumstances private detective Cormoran Strike investigates a killer unlike any he has
encountered before...Compulsively readable with twists at every turn.
A Map of the World
Jane Hamilton
Alice and Howard Goodwin run a small dairy farm in a mid west town and feel they and their daughters are living in a self-made
paradise. But, all it takes is a tragic accident to set into motion an irrevocable string of event that will change their lives. A harrowing
tale of loss of innocence. Spellbinding and lyrical. A classic.
The Wilderness
Samantha Harvey
It's Jake's birthday. He has lost his wife, his son is in prison and he is about to lose his past. Jake has Alzheimer's. As the disease
takes hold of him, the key events of his life shift, is there anything he'll be able to salvage from the wreckage. From the first sentence
this extraordinary book will hold you in its grip.
Perfect
Rachel Joyce
1972: 11yr-old Byron and his friend begin ‘Operation Perfect’ to rescue Byron’s mother from a crisis. Present day: Jim cleans tables
in the local café, a solitary figure struggling with OCD. Little connects them except that two seconds can change everything.
Characters to fall in love with. Kind, anxious, flawed, funny, wonderful.
The Vows of Silence
Susan Hill
What links seemingly random murders. Is the marksman with a rifle the same person as the killer with a handgun, or do the police
have two snipers on their hands. DCS Simon Serrailler is in charge, but struggling to cope with a tragedy at the heart of his family.
The pressure is mounting. A complex, fascinating read.
The Stranger's Child
Alan Hollinghurst
A Sunday Times Novel of the Year. In the summer of 1913, George Sawle brings his Cambridge friend Cecil to visit his family home.
Filled with intimacies and confusions, the weekend will link the families for ever, making a lasting impact on George’s 16yr old sister
Daphne. As decades pass fortunes change, secrets are revealed. Intricate, witty, richly comic.
Suffer the Little Children
Donna Leon
The 16th Commissario Brunetti novel is as subtle and gripping as ever. A senior paediatrician is brutally attacked when three men
take his 18month old son - But why? Meanwhile, Inspector Vianello uncovers a scam between pharmacists and doctors. Set in a
beautifully realised Venice seething with small town malice.
Tender is the Night
F. Scott Fitzgerald
One of the Amazon 100 Books to Read in a Lifetime. Set on the Riviera in the 1920s, American Dick Diver and his wife Nicole are
the epitome of chic, living a glamorous lifestyle and entertaining friends while their marriage becomes more fractured. In this book
Fitzgerald laments the failure of idealism and the carefully constructed trappings of high society. Eloquent, and beautiful. ‘Sometimes
it is harder to deprive oneself of a pain than of a pleasure.’
