DIY a 30kV 0.2uF Capacitor using mylar film and aluminium foil 0.1mm Mylar Film x 2 Width = 30cm, Total Length = 9.6m x 2 Fold into 8cm x 60 layers (120 foldings) M1 M2 A1 A2 Mylar Film Breakdown Voltage : 0.1mm ‐> 15000V 0.2mm ‐> 22000V 0.25mm ‐> 25000V 0.3mm ‐> 27500V 0.4mm ‐> 32000V I use 0.1mm mylar film which can only tolerate 15kV. If we need to increase the breakdown voltage to 30kV, we need to increase the thickness to 0.4mm!! An alternative way is to connect 2 cap. of 0.1mm mylar films in series : A1 A3 A2 M1 M2 A3 1 layer = 2 foldings Aluminium Foil Mylar Film Wire Wire Aluminium Foil x 3 Width = (A1&A3) 30cm , (A2) 26cm Total Length = 9.6m x 3 Use special Aluminium solder wire to connect the 2 sides to the wires Aluminium A1 & A3 shift about 2cm margin out of the mylar film in opposite direction to avoid high voltage arc occur on the edges. 0.1mm Mylar Film (30cm x 9.6m x 2) Aluminum Foil Special Solder Wire for Aluminium / Steel Folding aluminium foil in between mylar layers Completed Soldering outlets on both sides I’ve made more layers, result in 0.335uF For 0.2uF 30kV needs 60 layers
