I am keen to see the efforts of the various associations worldwide, and particularly in
Europe, coordinated to obtain wider recognition, by governments and the market, of
the profession of interpreter and translator. I would like to promote the active involvement
of professional associations in all matters relating to quality assurance, including the
implementation of ISO and other standards, and the creation and maintenance of official
registers of professional translators and interpreters, preferably under the aegis of the
associations. In addition, I would be keen to promote more sharing of best practices and
resources in relation to continuous professional development between associations and
the direct involvement of the associations in the design and development of educational
programmes by universities and other institutions.
In this era of global communication and global markets, FIT should coordinate the
development of a global strategy to promote the profession, drawing on the
strengths, achievements and best practices of its members. In the area of
professional development, FIT should coordinate the online accessiblity of CPD
and other educational resources. FIT should also ensure that professional
associations and the FIT itself play a central role in the roll-out of ISO standards in
the area of translation and interpreting services. In addition, FIT should defend the
rights of access of people to public services in multicultural and multilingual
settings in which professional interpreters and translators play a crucial role.
On the basis of many years of teaching strategy as part
of an MBA programme I have skills in the area of
strategy development and implementation. As a lecturer
and consultant in the area of online learning, I have
skills in the development of online learning resources. I
also have experience in managing consultative and
bargaining processes involving various interest groups.
I am a member of the Members'
Parliament of the Dutch Federation of
Trade Unions, FNV, and in this capacity
represent the interests of the
self-employed.
