Now that I am semi-retired and working part-time, I want
to use this spare time to give something back to the
profession while I am still actively in touch with it.
I believe my six years' experience at regional level in FIT
Europe put me in a good position to hit the ground
running and start doing useful work without delay.
Raise international profile through greater transparency, better
visibility, better communication and cooperation
Practise subsidiarity - global, regional, national levels
Help associations to help themselves
Continue ensuring transparent, intelligible, comparable accounts
Simpler governance - fewer committees, more ad hoc task forces.
But with all this: continuity!
I am a moderator and integrator rather than a charismatic
leader. I don't seek the public gaze, but can speak to
audiences if necessary. My approach to problems and
situations is mostly level-headed, objective and unemotional I tend to see both or several sides of a problem (which is
sometimes a disadvantage). I have developed from a loner
into a team player. And I am not afraid of harnessing
technology where it serves our purpose.
1971-1984 In-house translator (Unilever)
1984-2014 Freelance translator (German - English, largely
Environment and Energy)
Contacts with prominent individuals in associations, industry and
academia in many countries
Several years as member of German mirror committee for European
Standard EN 15038 and as German/Austrian delegate to ISO
Technical Committee TC37/SC2
Good passive knowledge of French. Reading knowledge of Spanish.

Institute of Translation & Interpreting (ITI)
ITI believes that its candidate's experience in
international associations, especially FIT Europe, make
him an ideal candidate for FIT Council. He represents a
"safe pair of hands", who is both diplomatic and
pragmatic. He shares the vision of ITI's board for FIT to
be the voice of professional associations for translators,
interpreters and terminologists at a global level.
ITI will support its candidate with an
annual dedicated budget for FIT and will
provide all of the administrative backup,
etc., that he needs in order to liaise
between FIT Council and ITI.
ITI is committed to accompanying FIT on the
same journey of professionalisation that it has
taken itself. This means working more
effectively and efficiently to promote the shared
objectives of FIT's member associations.
