Therefore, a greater attention is paid to the paintings from the first decades of his career, which have been little studied to date: historical scenes, bourgeois portraits and religious commissions, without forgetting, of course, his internationally famous works depicting the working life of the labourers, dockers and miners. Better than any other, his career reflects the main developments of the Belgian visual arts in the second half of the 19th century. Constantin Meunier took up training as a sculptor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and later turned to painting under the direction of François-Joseph Navez. He then painted religious and historical scenes which were soberly realistic. In 1875 he discovered the world of the workers and went back to sculpture. It is not until 1896 that we will see him concentrating on the theme which made him particularly famous: the miners’ life in the Borinage. > 6 7 > This exhibition combines about 250 art pieces, documents and objects, some of which having never been displayed to the public. Come and see, Dear Friends, the work of this great artist, whose vision of the world and humanity was closely linked to the political and social evolution of Belgium at the time of the industrial revolution. Numerous events are scheduled around this exhibition, don’t miss the 10 lectures (from 30 September till 16 December) which are an asset in understanding Constantin Meunier‘s work. (see programme pp. 30-31) On Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September, for Heritage Days, guided tours in French and Dutch for groups and blind people will be organized at the RMFAB. On Tuesday 23 November at 11:00, you will be able to visit the exhibition accompanied by Dr Francisca Vandepitte, curator. Compulsory registration at [email protected] or 02 508 32 11. All information on the websites www.fine-arts-museum.be, www.becomeafriend.be and www.extra-edu.be. A splendid catalogue will be published on that occasion (author: Dr Francisca Vandepitte) and the Friends can get a reduction when showing their membership card! Isidore Verheyden, Constantin Meunier, 1887. Oil on canvas, 155 x 97 cm 8 9 Constantin Meunier Museum Thanks to the success Constantin Meunier enjoyed as early as 1896, his artworks were sold in particular at the gallery L’Art Nouveau of Siegfried Bing in Paris and aroused a special interest in Germany, Austria and Denmark. The artist was able to build a vast and comfortable house rue de l’Abbaye in Ixelles, where he worked and lived till his death (1905). The Constantin Meunier museum is housed in that building and will be open every day, except on Monday, from 10:00 to 17:00 during the exhibition. A must-see, especially as there are also many art galleries in the area! Take the opportunity to discover the Constantin Meunier trail in Brussels (see exhibition brochure and the website www.expo-meunier.be) On Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September, for Heritage Days, guided tours in French and Dutch will be organized at the muséemeuniermuseum. Compulsory registration at [email protected] or 02 508 32 11. On Thursday 13 November the muséemeuniermuseum will be open from 17:00 à 22:00 and a free guided tour will be proposed at 18:00. 10 Rue de l’Ab baye 1050 Bruxell es 11 Kokoschka and Gauguin deciphered Multispectral analysis: technology at the service of art Since 2009 scientists from the VUB and curators from the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium have decided to study together the opportunity offered by the numerical analysis of multispectral images, as concerns the research in art history and the preventive conservation of the paintings thanks to non-invasive diagnostic methods. Two paintings from the Modern Art collection – Le portrait de Suzanne Bambridge by Paul Gauguin and Le Joueur de transe d’Oskar Kokoschka by Oskar Kokoschka – have been submitted to multispectral analysis: come and discover how this analysis is performed and its unexpected results! 22.07 2014 > 25.01 2015 Focus exhibition at the Fin-de-Siècle Museum Oskar Kokoschka, Le joueur de transe (Der Trancespieler) Portrait of the actor Ernst Reinhold, 1909. Oil on canvas, 81 x 65 cm 12 13 Peter Paul Rubens From autumn 2014 onwards, the RMFAB will display the silver ewer and basin which were probably realised about 1635-1636 by the famous Antwerp silversmith Theodoor I Rogiers (1602-1654?). The historiated scenes of these pieces were inspired by Peter Paul Rubens. These very rare art pieces might have been in possession of the second son of the famous painter, Nicolas, even of Rubens himself. In 1999, Sir and Lady Pierre Bauchau generously decided to purchase them so that they would not leave the country and to donate them to the Fondation Roi Baudouin. The condition was that the pieces would be exhibited in various Belgian museums and even abroad. It is a great honour for the Museums to be able to display them together with 12 sketches and panels by Peter Paul Rubens from their collections. Rubens ewer and basin, 17th century. Donated by Pierre and Colette Bauchau, Coll. Fondation Roi Baudouin, Rubenshuis, Antwerp © Hughes Dubois 14 15 T hematic path Women representations This publication in four languages (French, Dutch, German, English) realised by Educateam proposes to discover the Ancient Art collection through the representation of women in works dating from 1473 to 1835. The visual arts are a proof that women were part – as well as men – of the history enigma even if they were excluded from the decision-making process. On the other hand, as art has been produced solely by men for a long period and especially for men, the representations of the woman have been following standards which have transformed them into dream objects, beauty models or into particularly evil subjects. The pedagogical approach of this brochure is based on the contemporary sensitive and critical thought which questions the institutionalization of asymmetrical gender relationships. Available at the entrance to the museum (autumn 2014) and/ or at the Shop. 16 17 Jean Dypréau – Art critic and artistic writer Jean Dypréau (Brussels 1917-1985) has been a committed and critical mouthpiece of artistic life- in particular in Brussels. He wrote articles in art magazines, introductions to exhibitions in galleries and national and international art centres. He was especially interested in informal and abstract art but also in pop art. Dypréau wrote about artists, many of whom were also his friends. Dypréau was more than a voice, he was also an “actor” in the world of the visual arts. On the occasion of the publication of his work, a selection of pieces from the modern art collection will be displayed in the Royal Museums. Come, Dear Friends, and discover or rediscover Fontana, Claes Oldenburg, Marcel Broodthaers, Raoul d’Haese, Jo Delahaut, Vasarely, Jean Dubuffet, Max Ernst… and the ‘peintures partagées’ of Jean Dypréau. The Earth is round but it has a few bumps that prevent it from going in circles. Jean Dypréau 02.09 2014 > 25.01 2015 Exhibition Englebert Van Anderlecht and Jean Dypréau, Traduire la lumière Peinture partagée, 1959. Oil on canvas, 151,5 x 119 cm 18 19 New hanging up The first swap over of works in the Fin-de-Siècle Museum took place this summer. It concerned a hundred works which can be displayed only for a short time because of ‘conservation norms’. This change of scenery happens every six months, which allows to rediscover the museum as well as the presented collections at each visit. The pieces come from the collection of the RMFAB and of our partners Royal Library of Belgium, Royal Museums of Art and History, Wittockania and Monnaie. This year, Educatema proposes a new approach to the Finde-Siècle and Magritte Museums collections, concentrating on the link between literature and painting. In the Finde-Siècle Museum critical or poetical texts from famous authors or artists of the 19th century will be read out loud, commented and matched to the artworks. The Magritte Museum will present poetical texts, aphorisms, language games, visual poetry and excerpts from writers related to the surrealist movement as Nougé, Breton, Lautréamont, Prévert, Ernst, Scutenaire, Péret, Colinet… More info: www.extra-edu.be 20 The Magritte Museum blows out its 5th candle! In June 2009the Magritte Museum opened its doors to the public. Five years later more than 1 500 000 visitors had already been able to admire the biggest collection of Magritte works in the world and the Museum meets a great international success. On this occasion a new guide to the Magritte Museum will be published in mid-October 2014. We recommend you the reading of three books about the life and work of René Magritte: - Magritte by Michel Draguet (Folio/Gallimard) - La première vie de l’homme au chapeau melon by Jacques Roisin (Les impressions nouvelles) - Magritte poète visible et autres textes by Philippe Roberts-Jones (Cahier des MRBAB) You can buy these books in the Museum Shops, don’t forget to show your membership-card so you can get the price reduction granted to the Friends. 1 50 0 0 0 0 visitors! 21 Parcours Petits-Pas-Amusés (on the funny footprints trail) – Portraits Become A Friend Coup de cœur Our favourite: this interactive guide for grandparents (or parents) and their grandchildren, a trail for all those who are ready to try a new discovery of the museum with their small children (4 to 6 years old). If you are keen on internet you can download it on the site www.becomeafriend.be, or you can borrow it at the desk in the Forum. Come and share hand-in-hand a marvellous moment of discovery. Many thanks to Mrs Claire Van den Branden, art historian and grandmother herself who is at the root of this project. The portrait trail is now available while we are waiting for the update of the other projects. 22 Activities for the Friends • Night of the Friends: retrospective Constantin Meunier 23 September 2014 17:00 and 18:30 see p. 4 and 5 • General assembly of the RMFAB Friends 30 September at 18:30 in the small auditorium 9 rue du Musée Proxy available on the site www.becomeafriend.be • Shared views about Magritte 23 November 2014 at 11:00: René Magritte by Philippe Roberts-Jones and visit of the new Rubens hanging up and the silverware of the Fondation Roi Baudouin by Sabine Van Sprang. • concert of Vesselin Stanev Friday 21 November at 20:00 in the Bozar Become a Friend, in partnership with Musikoklasika, have the pleasure to propose you a special offer (50% on the public price) for the concert of Vesselin Stanev, prize-winner pianist (Long-Thibaud competition in Paris and Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow) in the following programme: Franz LISZT: Norma Fantasy, Don Juan Fantasy and Dante Sonata – Méphisto Walz n° 1 Book on the site www.musikoklasika.com and in the ‘code client’ space type PROMO50 after choosing your seats (17,50 € instead of 35€ in 1st category – €9.50 instead of 19€ in 2nd category), as long as seats are available.
