Because it is such a short school month, students need to make sure that they are caught up in all of their classes before the break to ensure that they can properly prepare for their final exams beginning January 20th, 2015. Following the break, there will only be two weeks of classes before exams begin. The last day of regular classes for the first semester is Monday, January 19th, 2015. Students are responsible to hand in all outstanding assignments and seek additional help if required. Teachers and staff are available to discuss concerns or answer any questions you may have. Please email the staff/teachers or call the school (867.669.0773) to arrange a meeting. Email addresses are found on our website (www.sjf.yk1.nt.ca). Congratulations to all of the volleyball and hockey participants who took part in Spike It and the Challenge Cup. The Falcon spirit has shone through brightly this year and I am thrilled to see our Sir John students taking pride in their school by showing their spirit and great sportsmanship. Good luck to our badminton players who will be participating in the Yellowknife tournament this weekend! I hope you enjoy some time off over the holiday season. Merry Christmas and Happy New year! Mr. Ed Lippert PAGE 2 Encounters with Canada École Sir John Franklin High School will, once again, be sending students to the Encounters with Canada Youth Forum this year. Route 51 Learning Institute Outreach Learning – Feeding Body and Mind Learning becomes more appealing and trendy when learners find a learning site that is accessible and centrally located, in a town or city. The combination of balanced nutritional snacks and ambient learning space forms a catalyst for learners between the ages of 16 to 21. Perhaps, other explanations may offer further insights on learners’ participation in individualized paced learning in different public education jurisdictions. However, learning either as selfdirected or teacher-directed becomes more appealing when the learner feels cared for through planned nutrition. Both the body and mind become, invariably, receptive to the care that such a learning experience provides. Learning location is also an integral fit to most learning experience, and such a fit is often positively manifested for learners who – for one reason or another – do not fit into the regular public school system, as of present. So the flexibility to come and leave from, learning sites, at the learner’s select time lends to independence of learning, and undoubtedly dares the learner’s willingness to take risk, as well as challenge. The surrounding or environment of a learning site adds to its trendiness, or lack thereof. There are invariably some benefits and pitfalls to a trendy location, but it is hoped that learners will lean more to the positive than negative incentives to feed both body and mind at Route 51. On the 14th of November, 25 Immersion, Core French, and Post-intensive French students in 11th and 12th grade wrote the International French Test. This evaluation is a certification of the level of French for non-francophone students living in non-francophone areas. This test isn’t only given in Canada, but all across the world! Congratulations to the 11th and 12th grade students in Mme Ricard and Mme Johnson’s classes! In Mme Johnson’s Core French 30 and Post-intensive French 31 classes, all students have completed an individual project to find examples of French from their daily lives. A few weeks ago, a student presented a kids’ television show where characters were making crêpes. After the show, the student had to prepare an activity for his classmates and took them to the school kitchen to make the tasty treats. Delicious! NEWSLETTER PAGE French Immersion Le 21 novembre, les élèves de la classe chimie 20 en immersion de Mme Chenard ont déterminé le pH de plusieurs solutions en utilisant des indicateurs acido-basiques. Voici quelques photos de cette expérience : On the November 21st, students from Mme Chenard’s immersion Chemistry 20 class found the pH level of different solutions using acid-base indicators. During the month of November, students of Mme Durepos’ Post-intensive French class have created a collaborative magazine. This student creation contains various articles on sports, film and video game reviews, as well as a few articles on health topics. While creating this document, students have learned vocabulary relating to the creation of a magazine as well as many other new useful expressions on the subject of their articles. Come visit the French department to admire this student project! 11 PAGE 12 Take your kids to work day On Wednesday, November 4th, 2014, Sir John’s grade nine students took part in the Take Your Kids to Work day. Pictured here is Mr. Lippert talking to Josh Elford, Evan Patzer and Chris Sangris about his responsibilities as the Principal of the school. In the afternoon, the three students went to William McDonald Middle School to join Mr. Skauge in the woodshop class. #workingwednesday By Hunaifa Malik For Take your kid to work day on Wednesday, November 5th, I went to the hospital with my Mom from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. There, I did my homework for the first few hours. At lunch, I served eggs and bacon. After lunch, I worked the cash register, then this scary woman came, and my mom’s boss had to take care of it. Also, when I was there, they called a code brown (chemical spill), but I didn’t know until they called the “all clear”. My favorite part was the people, customers and workers alike. Everyone was so sweet and kind. I had fun with my Mom, even met some of her “besties”. There’s nothing I didn’t like, although the small coffee was very strong. Anyway, after my mom’s work, I went with my dad to his office. My dad is a Federal Government worker, he’s an Economic Development Advisor, which means he gives individuals/ groups who have ideas that will benefit the community as a whole. My favorite part of his job, is the technology. His office is very high-tech. They also have free hot chocolate, and all the people are nice people. I got to make fun of my dad with his co-workers, it was a good day. The one thing I didn’t like about my dad’s job is, it’s kind of boring. I consider both my parent’s jobs as careers I could one day do. I’d rather do my dad’s job though, because he gets to travel a lot, and he gets paid four times more than my mom. I had a good day. I wish we could do it again. Come on YK1, we’ve got four long years ahead of us, give us a break!
