Treasures Direct From The House of Krug
100% sold and
50% above high estimate at Sotheby’s
1 December 2012: Today, at Sotheby’s New York, the historic sale of Finest & Rarest Wines Featuring
Treasures Direct From The House of Krug brought a total of $2,643,795 with the sale 93% sold-by-lot and
97% sold-by-value. The Krug in the sale, which had never previously left Krug’s cellars in Reims was 100%
sold and brought a total of $782,285 – 50% above the high estimate of $522,100. 100% of the top ten
lots in the sale were bought by collectors from the Americas with eight of the ten biggest purchasers coming
from North or South America. There was particularly strong online participation with online bidders
competing for 54% of the lots and winning 22%. This was Sotheby’s last wine sale in New York this year and
brings the wine auction total to $17.7 million with an overall sold-by-value rate of 98%.
Margareth Henriquez, President and CEO of Krug said: “I am delighted with the result of this unique, once in
a lifetime auction. The enthusiasm, number and level of bids and the whole organization of the sale were
extraordinary. I profoundly appreciate, on behalf of everyone at Krug, the passion, interest and determination
shown by so many Krug lovers from around the world in their wish to acquire these rare Champagnes. We are
committed to enriching and perpetuating the vision of outstanding quality set down by our founder, Joseph
Krug. I would like to thank Serena and all the Sotheby's wine team for their great professionalism, together
with the whole Krug, Moet Hennessy and Moet Hennessy USA teams who all made this possible. The result
of this sale made me feel very proud and happy.”
Commenting on the Krug section of the auction, Serena Sutcliffe MW, Sotheby’s International Head of Wine
said: “It was an enormous honour and pleasure to see these historic Krug Champagnes leave their cellars in
Reims and find new homes around the world at our auction. The level of interest in these extraordinary cuvées
was electrifying and prices soared into the stratosphere. We wish to thank Krug for giving us the opportunity
to work with these superb Champagnes and to create a truly memorable sale which, of course, we shall
celebrate with.......Krug!”
On the various owner part of the auction, Serena continued: “This was a splendid sale with which to end the
year in New York. With a two-day sale in Hong Kong and an auction in London to follow, Sotheby’s has
already sold $59.3 million of wine in 2012. Interest was very buoyant and there were exceptional prices paid
for Romanée-Conti and Burgundy in general, with mature top growth Bordeaux also doing very well. We had
the feeling that people were treating themselves with great bottles for the holidays to come.”
