PRELUDE Wie schön leuchtet die Morgenstern James Woodman (b. 1957) THE REVELATION OF GOD IN CREATION FIRST READING Genesis 1 : 1 – 5, 24 – 28 Read by Mary Dowe In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. And God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.’ And it was so. God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, ‘Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.’ So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.’ » Please stand / Veuillez vous lever 3 HYMN 1 Before the earth had yet begun Her journey round the burning sun, Before a seed of life had stirred, There sounded God’s creating Word. 2 In that bright dawning of the world, Ere ocean surged or wind unfurled, The vaults of heaven with praises rang; The morning stars together sang. 3 Thus when creation’s Lord did take The clay of earth our form to make, God willed that to our race belong The gifts of music, word, and song. 4 For us who would this God attend, No earthly mind can comprehend Eternal glory; praise alone Is our companion by that throne. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. (Johannes 1, 14) And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, whose glory we have seen as of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14). In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, ‘Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.’ When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, ‘In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: “And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.” ’ Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, ‘Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.’ When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure-chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. When they saw the star the magi rejoiced, and entering into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they adored him. And opening their treasures, they presented him gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh. Nature is a temple in which living pillars Sometimes give voice to confused words; Man passes there through forests of symbols Which look at him with a familiar eye.. Like long and distant echoes mingling In a deep and dark unity, Vast as the night and as the light of day, Odours, sounds, and colours correspond. There are perfumes as fresh as the skin of a child, Sweet as an oboe, green as a meadow — And there are others, corrupt, rich, triumphant, expanding into infinity, Like amber and musk, benzoin and incense, Odours which sing the ecstasy of soul and sense. 8 CHOIR A Poor Place Patrick Wedd (b. 1948) A poor place this, no place to welcome kings; No place for myrrh nor frankincense nor gold. A place for simple folk and simple things, A place of shadows, comfortless and cold. Yet kings are here, and now as daylight dies, By their command a minstrel softly sings To calm the child, while Magi search the skies For mighty Jupiter and Saturn’s rings. So poor a place, yet now it welcomes kings. See how they pause outside the stable door. See how they kneel as each one humbly brings A gift and lays it on the earthen floor. For if the stars are true, if planets speak, And if their journey to this humble place Has guided them aright, this child they seek Is mighty ruler both of time and space. A poor place this, the world of these our days, So poor in justice, poor in joy and peace; Where children starve while every evil pays, And empires clash in wars that never cease. Yet still the Holy Child is brought to birth; The grace he gives far more than we can tell. His loving hands enfold the wounded earth, And all is well, and all things shall be well. Herbert O’Driscoll PRAYER Priest Let us pray All PRIÈRE Prêtre Prions le Seigneur Eternal God, who by a star led the Magi to the worship of your Son. Assemblée Amen. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ And Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ Now standing there were six stone water-jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, ‘Fill the jars with water.’ And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, ‘Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.’ So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water 10 knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, ‘Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.’ Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. Hé Seigneur âne, hé ! 11 SIXTH READING From ‘The Interior Castle’ (Chapter 2) Teresa of Avila (1515 - 1582) Read by Vivian Lewin When, in the warm weather, the mulberry trees come into leaf, the little egg which was lifeless before its food was ready, begins to live. The caterpillar nourishes itself upon the mulberry leaves until, when it has grown large, people place near it small twigs upon which, of its own accord, it spins silk from its tiny mouth until it has made a narrow little cocoon in which it buries itself. Then this large and ugly worm leaves the cocoon as a lovely little white butterfly. If we had not seen this but had only heard of it as an old legend, who could believe it? Could we persuade ourselves that insects so utterly without the use of reason as a silkworm or a bee would work with such industry and skill in our service that the poor little silkworm loses its life over the task? This would suffice for a short meditation, sisters, without my adding more, for you may learn from it the wonders and the wisdom of God. ...... The silkworm symbolizes the soul which begins to live when, kindled by the Holy Spirit, it commences using the ordinary aids given by God to all, and applies the remedies left by Him in His Church, such as regular confession, religious hooks, and sermons; these are the cure for a soul dead in its negligence and sins and liable to fall into temptation. Then it comes to life and continues nourishing itself on this food and on devout meditation until it has attained full vigour, which is the essential point. Music: St. Venatius; Antiphoner, Rouen 1728 SEVENTH READING Mark 1 : 4 – 11 Read by Ben Stuchbery John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, ‘The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.’ In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’ » CHOIR Tribus miraculis Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-94) Tribus miraculis ornatum, diem sanctum colimus: Hodie stella Magos duxit ad praesepium: Hodie vinum ex aqua factum est ad nuptias: Hodie a Joanne Christus baptizari voluit, ut salvaret nos, Alleluia. We observe this holy day ornamented with three miracles: Today a star led the Magi to the manger; Today wine was made from water at the wedding; Today Christ desired to be baptised by John, so that He might save us, Alleluia. PRAYER Priest Let us pray All Eternal Father, who at the baptism of Jesus revealed him to be your Son, anointing him with the Holy Spirit, keep your children, born of water and the Spirit, faithful to their calling; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 14 THE REVELATION OF GOD IN MISSION Please stand / Veuillez vous lever HYMN 1 Sing of God made manifest in a child robust and blest, to whose home in Bethlehem where a star had guided them, magi came and gifts unbound, signs mysterious and profound: myrrh and frankincense and gold grave and God and King foretold. 2 Sing of God made manifest when at Jordan John confessed, "I should be baptized by you, but your bidding I will do." Then from heaven a double sign-dove-like Spirit, voice divine-hailed the true Anointed One: "This is my beloved Son." 3 Sing of God made manifest when Christ came as wedding guest and at Cana gave a sign, turning water into wine; further still was love revealed as he taught, forgave, and healed, bringing light and life to all who would listen to God's call. 4 Sing of God made manifest on the cloud-capped mountain's crest, where both voice and vision waned until Christ alone remained: glimpse of glory, pledge of grace, given as Jesus set his face towards the waiting cross and grave, sign of hope that God would save. Out of the orient crystal skies a blazing star did shine, showing the place where sleeping lies a blessed babe divine. This very star the kings did guide, e’en from the furthest east, to Bethlehem where it betide this blessed babe did rest. And for the joy of his great birth a thousand angels sing: Glory and peace unto the earth where born is this new King! When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’ The Lord be with you And also with you.
