Brighton, England Brighton is a very busy and exciting town on the south coast of England. Over 250,000 people live there and many of them are famous. ‘I think Brighton’s quite a romantic place, and it’s got a holiday feel about it … it still feels as if I’m on holiday every day. Brighton has a unique atmosphere and a certain kind of people who wouldn’t live anywhere else.’ Victoria Gould, the actress says. What is special about Brighton’s history? Why did it become so well known? Brighton was called Brighthelmston in the 6th century AD. It was a small village where 400 people lived. By the end of the18th century, there were still no more than 2,000 people there because of flooding, bad weather and attacks by the French. But, in 1750 something dramatic happened! Dr Richard Russell of Lewes, a town nearby, said that fresh sea air was very healthy and that it was good to drink and swim in sea water. This was a new idea at the time and when people in London heard about this, people with a lot of money started to travel down to the south coast. Then, in 1783, the Prince of Wales (George IV) started to travel to Brighton, as it was now called, and this is when the town really started to become popular. He built a fantastic palace, called the Royal Pavilion, which tourists can still visit today. People also liked to go to Brighton and visit the three piers there. When the railway between London and the town opened, people of all social classes could visit Brighton. Brighton still has a very special atmosphere today because it is full of classic old buildings, as well as beautiful, modern ones. It is popular with both young and old people and has many pubs and cafés close to the sea as well as many theatres, nightclubs and cinemas. Brighton is near the South Downs where people can go for long, beautiful walks and it has recently become a city. Seite 10 von 12 True False __X___ 1.
