NUIT BLANCHE ON OCTOBER 3RD
“The wind has risen and blew the sails. Shore out of sight. Left alone at dawn
my mother plagued with pain poured her moans and groan for you to hear. You
did not care. Using my ambition to turn me away and stop striving after it, you
carried me off”. *
By the Frédéric Boyer latest invigorated translation of his Confessions burning
prose, the next-to-be sainthooded Augustin depicts with contemporary shameless
all momentum, all of our momentum, those of a being facing itself, and those
facing its god. Far from this acme or burning point, for your pleasure or meditation, “Nuit Blanche” offers a lot for wandering around : faster but with a shorter
trip than Carthage to Rome 1700 years ago, you find artists from Marseille. you
listen to writers from all over the World at the Harboufront Internation Festival

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF AUTHORS
SCHMITT, LAURRENT, SANSAL
The International Festival of Authors
(IFOA) was inaugurated in 1980 with a
mandate to bring together the best
writers of contemporary world literature. Gathering more than 80 authors
from around 15 countries, the IFOA
includes readings, interviews, lectures and round table discussions as
well as public book signings and a festival bookstore.
This year, the festival has invited three
French authors : Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt,
Eric Laurrent and Boualem Sansal.
ERIC-EMMANUEL
SCHMITT
Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt, playwright,
novelist, and author of short stories,
was awarded the French Academy’s
Grand Prix du Théâtre in 2001.
He is one of Europe’s most popular
and best-selling authors. His books include Oscar and the Lady in Pink
(1999), The Gospel According to Pi-
OCTOBER 21ST - OCTOBER 31ST
late (2000), and My Life with Mozart
(2005). The film Odette Toulemonde,
Schmitt’s debut as screenwriter and
director, was released in 2007.
Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt captivates
the reader with his spirited, buoyant
style and enchanting stories that
move effortlessly from the everyday
to the fantastical. The eight stories in
this collection, his first to be published in English, represent some of
his best writing and most imaginative
storylines: from the love story between
Balthazar, wealthy and successful author, and Odette, cashier at a supermarket, to the tale of a barefooted
princess; from the moving story of a
group of female prisoners in a Soviet
gulag to the entertaining portrait of
a perennially disgruntled perfectionist.
Here are eight contemporary fables,
populated by a cast of extravagant
and affecting characters, about people in search of happiness. Behind
each story lies a simple, if elusive,
truth: happiness is often right in front
of our eyes, though we may
frequently be blind to it.

Eric Laurrent was born in 1966 in

Oscar’s new bride when Oscar is

Oscar’s incredibly attractive new

Based on a true story and inspired
by the work of Primo Levi, The German Mujahid is a heartfelt reflection

themes, The German Mujahid is a
truly groundbreaking novel. For the

Modernization has reached the
tropical
forests
of
South
Cameroon, where the Bagyeli pygmies struggle to maintain their traditions while adapting to new ways of
life. With remarkable access, the
filmmakers watch the Bagyeli people
as they hunt, learn, sing, start businesses, manage conflicts with neighbouring tribes, and deal with the
changes in their environment.
This is an urgent and compelling

In the mid-19th century, Mount
Aiguoal in southern France was bare
rock. This is the story of two men
who made it green again – George
Fabre, a Guard with the French military, and Charles Flahault, a botanist.
The pair worked for 30 years, testing
new species, lobbying local farmers,
and battling war, harsh weather and
resistance from superiors to achieve
their dream of reforestation.
Their story is a reminder that the
modern environmental movement’s
dreams are not exclusive to today,
but rather part of a long and wideranging history of conscious stewardship on behalf of nature.

NUCLEAR NIGHTMARE
BY ERIC GUERET
Éric Guéret is recognized in France
for his investigative television documentaries
As even ecologists reconsider nu-
clear as an alternative to burning carbon, Radioactive ware : The Nuclear
nightmare examines the impact of
nuclear waste for the near future and
next hundreds of thousands of years.
The “energy of the future” is astutely
dissected– clearly outlining how nuclear power is generated, how
waste is created and systematically
uncovering what happens to waste
produced in nuclear plants in France.
This movie is allowed incredible access to French nuclear plants, recycling facilities, and the archives of
Greenpeace Europe and testing facilities of CRIIRAD. And while some
hope is presented for the future,
you’ll want answers from our own
government about what is happening
to nuclear waste in Canada.

MUSICAL AND VISUAL PERFORMANCES BY LAURENT CHAMBERT
Conceived and produced in 1999,
T256 is originally a visual labyrinth
composed of animated sequences
connected to each other by hypertext
links. The first digital version was released in June 2000 and presented at
the Contemporary Art Centre in
Castres, France.
The concept of this new version is
based on the creation of dedicated
electronic music partitions for every
sequence of the original visual
project (12 sequences in total).
The installation will present a
screening of T256 - a virtual visit and a performed musical combina-
tion/arrangement, following the
course of the visual elements pro-
jected.
The installation/performance is designed as a game, made up of 5 different moments during which the
audience will be able to view/listen
to the artist’s live performance.
During the artist’s time off (not performing), T256 continues to show
different sequences of its labyrinth.
The audience is invited to choose the
access to the different visual sequences.

THE AUTOMATISTE REVOLUTION: MONTREAL 1941-1960
This is one of the most extensive exhibitions of the Automatiste group of
artists which included Jean-Paul
Riopelle and Paul-Émile Borduas. The
exhibition will present 60 works of
art, as well as photographs, books,
and other documentation, borrowed
from across Canada.
The Automatiste artists gathered
under the leadership of Canadian
painter Paul-Émile Borduas in the
early 1940s. Borduas was an artist
and an activist for the separation of
church and state in Quebec. The
artists who gathered together were
inspired by the stream of consciousness writings of the time and ap-
proached their paintings through an
exploration of the subconscious –
avoiding representation at all costs.
Automatism is recognized today as
the most interdisciplinary and possibly the most important modernist
movement in Canada.
In 1948, a group of 16 artists signed
a manifesto called the Refus global
(Total Refusal) which became one of
the pillars of the Quiet Revolution, a
period of intense change in Quebec.
The Refus global was an anti-religious
and anti-establishment manifesto
that would become one of the most
controversial artistic and social documents in modern Quebec.
The Automatistes were not solely
painters but also included dancers,
playwrights, poets, critics and choreographers. After 20 years of challenging the politically and religiously
repressive Quebec society, the Automatistes as a group disbanded in
1960 with the death of Borduas.
The Automatiste artists exhibited in
New York and Paris during the 1940s
and 1950s.

CINEMATHEQUE'S SPECIAL EVENT ON NUIT BLANCHE
Join the Scotiabank Nuit Blanche on
a “trip to the moon,” TIFF Cinematheque’s all-night programme celebrating the origins of cinema, with films
by les frères Lumière (Louis & Auguste) and Georges Méliès.
Since its birth in 1895 (the date on
which an audience first assembled
and paid to watch a screening – a very
short one! – in the Salon Indien at the
Grand Café in Paris), the cinema has
split into two principal strands: the
documentary mode commonly associated with the Lumière brothers, and
fiction, which evolved from the fantastical storytelling and wildly creative set design of Georges Méliès, a
magician who was among the paying
spectators in that historic first
screening.
As the never-ending saga of “Louis
vs. Georges” resurfaces throughout
the evolution of cinema , with works
in both camps routinely defying their
own categories, this programme,
while providing endless enjoyment
and awe, also demonstrates how,
right from the start, cinema was born
of a desire to marry art and life in
ways both ecstatic and eloquent.
Among the films included here are
such famous works as the Lumière’s
Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory
in Lyon (1895) and The Arrival of a
Train at La Ciotat (1895), which, according to legend, caused a mass
exodus when first screened, so convincingly real did that locomotive
seem, and Méliès’ beloved and oftquoted A Trip to the Moon (1902).
The films will be projected repeatedly throughout the course of Scotiabank Nuit Blanche and will
feature live, improvised scores by pianists William O’Meara, Andrei Stre-
liaev, and Robert Hall. Andrea Picard
