La faculté de médecine de l’Université Paris Descartes est née en 2004
de la fusion de trois facultés : Necker-Enfants malades, Cochin-Saint
Vincent-de-Paul, Broussais-Hôtel Dieu. Elle est la première faculté
de médecine de France en nombre d’étudiants et par ses résultats.

DE PCEM 2 à DCEM 1,
les orientations nationales
prévoient une organisation par
thèmes, réunis à Paris Descartes
en systèmes, intégrant les
disciplines autour de l’étude de
chaque organe, ce qui permet
un apprentissage global. Par
exemple, le système respiratoire
intègre l’anatomie et l’histologie de
l’arbre respiratoire, la physiologie
pulmonaire, la sémiologie.
L’enseignement se fait par des
travaux dirigés en petits groupes
et des cours magistraux, lesquels
sont filmés en direct et mis en ligne
sur le site internet.
DU DCEM 2 AU DCEM 4,
l’enseignement est structuré
en pôles, coordonnant les
enseignements dirigés en petits
groupes les après-midi à la faculté
avec l’apprentissage clinique en
stage hospitalier tous les matins.
Les étudiants intègrent ainsi
la vie hospitalière, ils exercent
des actes médicaux de pratique
courante, apprennent à mobiliser
leurs connaissances, à travailler en
équipe et à construire une bonne
relation médecin-patient.
AU TERME DE LA 6E ANNÉE (DCEM 4),
les étudiants se présentent
à un Examen Classant National,
à l’issue duquel, selon leur rang
de classement, ils optent pour
une spécialité et une inter-région.
Durant trois à cinq ans, en tant
qu’ « internes », ils se forment
principalement dans les services
cliniques. La thèse de médecine,
soutenue à la fin du cursus, leur
délivre le statut de « Docteur
en médecine ».

L’APPRENTISSAGE DE LA MÉDECINE AU LIT DU MALADE, les staffs,
la recherche clinique sont des activités universitaires inhérentes aux
services hospitaliers où sont pris en charge les étudiants, externes,
internes, les stagiaires étrangers, les personnels paramédicaux.
À la différence de nombreux pays étrangers, la formation médicale
française repose sur un compagnonnage quotidien à l’hôpital, qui
dure pendant six à huit ans, du DCEM 2 à la fin du troisième cycle.
La Faculté de médecine Paris Descartes offre aux étudiants un choix
complet de terrains de stages cliniques, dans plus de cent quatre vingt
dix services et unités fonctionnelles, comprenant toutes les spécialités,
regroupées en pôles thématiques au sein du Groupement Hospitalier
Universitaire Ouest de l’Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris.
LE GHU OUEST est le plus important des groupements hospitaliers
de l’AP-HP, réunissant le quart des hôpitaux de Paris, avec deux facultés
dont Paris Descartes.

Un second type de parcours implique une interruption des études
de médecine avant l’externat. Trois filières permettent d’obtenir sur
concours une bourse pour le travail de recherche, puis une bourse
complémentaire pour achever les études médicales :

› La filière médecine-sciences de la Faculté de médecine Paris Descartes,
mise en place en 2006. Après une formation scientifique et six mois de

en médecine-sciences effectuent un Master 2 (un an de stage de
recherche à temps plein) puis éventuellement une thèse de sciences.
La formation à la recherche
Accessible aux étudiants dès le PCEM 2, la double formation médicale et
scientifique ouvre aux carrières hospitalo-universitaires et de recherche.
Un premier cursus commence par un Master 1 en Sciences de la vie et de
la santé, avec choix de parcours en biologie cellulaire, chimie, génétique,
infectiologie, physiologie, pharmacologie et toxicologie, santé publique.

La force et l’originalité de la recherche médicale sont liées à sa finalité :
soulager et guérir les malades. La Faculté de médecine Paris Descartes
est résolument engagée dans une recherche clinique et épidémiologique
en interaction constante avec les laboratoires de biologie.
L’université diffuse et génère du savoir. Sans recherche, il n’est pas de
bonne pédagogie, de même, la recherche doit induire un questionnement
chez les étudiants.
La Faculté de médecine Paris Descartes est la seule en France à être
dans les cent premières du classement de Shanghai. L’ensemble des
équipes associées à la faculté constitue l’un des plus grands centres
européens de recherche médicale.
Cinq instituts fédératifs de recherche (I.F.R.), ont des plates-formes

The Paris Descartes University Faculty of Medicine was created in 2004
by fusing three existing faculties: Necker-Enfants Malades, Cochin-Saint
Vincent-de-Paul and Broussais-Hôtel Dieu. It is the leading faculty of

FROM PCEM 2 TO DCEM 1,

an organisation of teaching
around particular themes. At Paris
Descartes, these themes are
grouped together into “systems”,
integrating disciplines into the
study of each organ, facilitating
global learning. For example,
the respiratory system can be
broken down into the anatomy and
histology of the respiratory tree,
pulmonary physiology and studies
of signs and symptoms. Teaching
is based on directed work in small
groups and lectures, which are
filmed and made available online.
FROM DCEM 2 TO DCEM 4,
teaching is structured around
sites, with directed work in small
groups during the afternoon at
the faculty and clinical training
at the hospital in the morning.
The students are thus integrated
into hospital life, carrying out
medical activities in everyday
practice, learning to use their
knowledge, to work in a team and
to construct a good doctor-patient
relationship.
AT THE END OF THE SIXTH YEAR
(DCEM 4), the students sit a national
competitive examination. Depending
on the results they obtain (their
rank among the students taking
the examination), the students then
have the opportunity to opt for a
speciality and region. Over the next
three to five years, while interns,
they are trained principally in clinical
departments. Students acquire
the status of “Doctor of Medicine”
through the writing and defence of a
dissertation at the end of the course.

MEDICAL TEACHING AT THE PATIENT’S BEDSIDE, high-quality staff and
clinical research are academic elements inherent to hospital services
training students, externs, interns, foreign placement students and
paramedical staff. Unlike many other countries, France bases its medical
training on the daily accompaniment of doctors at the hospital, for six to
eight years, from DCEM 2 to the end of clinical training.
Paris Descartes Faculty of Medicine offers students a full range of

A second training opportunity involves a break from medical training
before DCEM 2. Three possibilities are open to students for obtaining,
through a competitive examination, a grant for research and an additional
grant for the completion of their medical studies:

› Medicine-sciences at Paris Descartes Faculty of Medicine, which
was set up in 2006. After scientific training and six months spent in
a laboratory in parallel with PCEM 2 and DCEM 1, medicine-sciences
students undertake a Masters 2 (one year of full-time research) and
may even submit a Doctor of Science dissertation.
RESEARCH TRAINING
Combined medical and scientific training is open to students from PCEM 2
onwards, opening the way to university hospital and research careers.
A first course begins with a Masters 1 in Life and Health Sciences, with a
choice of options in cell biology, chemistry, genetics, infectious diseases,
physiology, pharmacology and toxicology, and public health. The Masters
2 year and Doctor of Science dissertation take place during the student’s
internship.

The Faculty’s Cochin site houses
the Parisian Health Biotech
Incubator, which helps startup companies and individuals
wishing to set up such companies
to valorise their research work.
It follows these companies
over a period of two to three
years, providing them with all
the services they require in the
legal, accounting, commercial,
financial and managerial domains.
In seven years, the Paris Health
Biotech Incubator has assisted 41
companies, and thereby helped
create 478 jobs. At the end of the
incubation period, the companies
may move to the Paris Health
Cochin “company nursery”, which
currently houses nine companies
employing 150 people.

The force and originality of medical research lie in its ends: patient
care and cure. The Paris Descartes Faculty of Medicine is resolutely
committed to clinical and epidemiological research with constant
interaction with biological laboratories. The university disseminates and
generates knowledge. Without research, there can be no good teaching,

The Paris Descartes Faculty of Medicine is the only medical faculty in

THE HEGP RESEARCH CENTRE
will be inaugurated at the end of

cardiovascular diseases.
THE IMAGINE INSTITUTE will create a research center working on genetic
diseases, including diagnosis and therapy, implanted in the heart of the
Hôpital Necker-Enfants Malades. Gathering researchers, medical doctors,
children and families, the project is initiated and supported by four
founders in partnership: Université Paris Descartes, Inserm, Assistance
Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris (APHP), and the Association Française contre
les Myopathies (AFM).

A key element of the strategy of Paris Descartes Faculty of Medicine is
to encourage students to discover new horizons, through humanitarian
missions, Erasmus exchanges and placements in other laboratories. This
mobility fosters a more open approach to other practices and cultures
and to supporting those in need. Many foreign students are also trained
by the Faculty.
The Faculty organises partnerships with prestigious institutions and
exchanges of teachers and researchers of international renown; it also
participates in discussions concerning the harmonisation of medical
studies in Europe.

› Humanitarian missions: in their second and third years, students may
choose to participate in organised group voyages abroad, with the
support of university bodies and the student association SOLEM. In
the summer of 2008, 18 projects will involve 149 students travelling.

fourth-year students, go on placements abroad. They participate in
hospital work across the world.
› The Erasmus exchange programme allows students to study in one of
