The Pearson Room is also open for Lunch from 12 noon to
2 p.m. Some of our Chef’s menu highlights include a
smoked salmon sandwich with dill-Dijon mayo, red onion, lettuce and tomato, seasonal dishes such as roasted
sweet pepper pasta with grilled eggplant and toasted pine
nuts.
Also, why not drop in the Bar after work for tapas?
Our Tapas menu features succulent venison potstickers,
lamb shank spoons, vegetable tempura and much more.
Rideau Club Wine Club
The Rideau Club is interested
in establishing an on-going
“wine tasting” club for those
interested in tasting wine in
an elegant yet informal atmosphere where members
can refine and develop their
wine culture, knowledge and
experience. The club will aim
to provide and improve
knowledge, appreciation, and
enjoyment of wine. The goal
is to hold 8 to 9 wine-related
events per year. Tastings will
feature wines from all over
the world and cover the entire
wine spectrum.

There will be a professional
sommelier to volunteer her
time and lead the sessions.
These tastings should be fascinating to almost everyone,
from beginner to connoisseur.
A date for the first session
will be announced shortly.
The sessions will be limited
to 12 individuals.

set a table, chair and napkin etiquette, order of service;
A meal will be served and students will learn to manage different and challenging dining situations.
At six o’clock there
will be a short ceremony when Jim Mitchell, Honorary Secretary of
the Board, will formally accept this donation and
Harvey Slack will follow with his own contribution
about the history and raison d’être for their decision to deplete their shelves in order to augment
those of our Library.

General Thomas J. Lawson CMM,
CD graduated from the Royal Military
College (RMC) of Canada with an Electrical Engineering Degree in 1979. In
1985, he completed a Master's Degree
in Electrical Engineering through
RMC, and then went on to serve as a
professor at the College. General Lawson held various
staff positions within the Air Force before joining the CF
Transformation Team in 2005 where he led the stand-up
of the Strategic Joint Staff organization. In May of 2007
he was appointed Commandant of the Royal Military College in Kingston. In 2009, General Lawson was promoted
to Major-General and appointed Assistant Chief of the
Air Staff. In July 2011, he was promoted to the rank of
Lieutenant-General and posted to Peterson Air Force
Base, Colorado, where he assumed responsibility as the
Deputy Commander North American Aerospace Defence
Command. General Lawson was promoted to his current
rank and was formally appointed as the Canadian Forces'
Chief of the Defence Staff on October 29, 2012.

Considered as one of the finest historians of WWII,
Hastings approaches this narrative in an innovative way, from below, from eye witness accounts.
This focus on human experience, especially since it
varied immensely from campaign to campaign and
continent to continent, brings the events closer
emotionally to the reader.
At the April 11 Speaker's luncheon, General Lawson will
speak about how the world is witnessing an everchanging security environment which is also influencing
its economic situation. He will also address the vital role
played by the Canadian Forces in domestic operations
and across the globe - including working with other government agencies in Canada to maintain arctic sovereignty and Canada's international missions.

A Night to Remember
Saturday April 27
Seventeen Voyces’ presentation of All That Jazz will
bring an early summer to the Rideau Club on Saturday, April 27. Back by popular demand, the talented
chamber choir’s warming numbers include George
Gershwin’s sultry “Summertime” and Hoagy Carmichael’s evocative “Georgia on My Mind”.
Directed by the choir’s founder Kevin Reeves, the program includes “Jada Jazz”, “Skylark”, “Ain’t Misbehavin”, and Rodgers and Hart’s “Blue Moon”. Because
jazz has its origins in 19th century spiritual and folk
music, the versatile choir will also sing the evocative
spiritual “Shenandoah”.
An exceptional jazz pianist will accompany the choir
for many of their numbers. Peter Brown is considered
one of the best keyboards jazz and blues players in
Ottawa, playing piano, synthesizers, and organs. His
styles range from Chicago blues to bebop to country.
Career highlights include opening for B.B. King, backing Texas blues guitarist Sherman Robertson as well
as Chicago blues legend A. C. Reed. He plays with the
Mumbo Jumbo Voodoo Combo and Shameless Blues.
The concert evening includes a delicious three-course
meal, wine with dinner and a glass of wine at the reception before dinner. As one of the Rideau Club’s
members says, Seventeen Voyces offers
“entertainment at its best”.

“CANADA’S CONSTITUTIONAL REVOLUTION”

an old friend and comrade in arms
dating back to 1980, with an engaging and witty presentation including references to the author’s involvement in constitutional reform
and key role as a legal adviser to
Prime Ministers Pearson and Trudeau.
On January 23rd, 2013, the Special
Events Committee was pleased to
present a book launch and luncheon presentation by the Honourable
Barry L. Strayer. Josephine
Palumbo, Chair, Special Events
Committee welcomed members and
guests noting the number of distinguished figures of the judiciary and
legal community who had come to
Barry Strayer spoke to his book,
which is also in part a personal
memoir, from a Rhodes Scholarship and Bachelor in Civil Law at
Oxford and a Doctorate at Harvard,
both specializing in constitutional
law, leading to Asst. Deputy Minister and legal counsel to Ministers
of Justice (Messrs. Trudeau and
Chretien) and Prime Ministers
(Pearson and Trudeau) on the repatriation of the Constitution and the
Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
His remarks interspersed personal
and professional recollections of
federal and federal/provincial Ministerial meetings, including a fascinating account of events relating
to the “night of long knives”. With
his background and experience, he
was the right man at the right place
at the right time to make significant and memorable contributions
to Canadian constitutional history.
All books at the desk were sold
out. Those who did not buy on arrival had to await an additional shipment. This is a “must” read by all
interested in the making of the
most important document on Canadian federal and provincial governance and on rights and freedoms since the British North America Act of 1867.

also was the convener for this
event, and who presented our special guest with a small token of our
gratitude for his thoughtful presentation and significant addition
to the Rideau Club (2013) Luncheon Speakers Roster.

Le Rideau Club envisage la
création d’un club permanent
de « dégustation de vins »
dans lequel les membres intéressés pourraient goûter des
vins dans une atmosphère élégante bien qu’informelle ainsi
que raffiner et approfondir
leur culture, leur savoir et leur
expérience œnologiques. Le
club aurait pour objectif de
fournir et d’approfondir les
connaissances et l’appréciation du vin. Le club organiserait chaque année entre 8 et 9
activités liées au vin. Les séances de dégustation permet-
traient de déguster des vins
du monde entier et de toutes
les catégories.
Un sommelier professionnel
animerait bénévolement les
séances. Ces activités de dégustation devraient fasciner
tous les membres, des débutants aux connaisseurs.
Une date pour la première réunion sera bientôt annoncée.
Un maximum de 12 personnes

Le jeudi 21 mars
Veuillez vous joindre aux membres du comité de la
bibliothèque, du comité des événements spéciaux
et aux membres du conseil d’administration le jeudi 21 mars pendant la rencontre sociale du jeudi
entre dix-sept et dix-neuf heures. Le Club reconnaîtra alors les dons généreux de feu l’honorable
Laurier LaPierre et de M. Harvey A. Slack à notre
collection d’ouvrages sur le Canada.
Les familles peuvent doter leurs enfants des outils dont

Les filles et garçons apprendront aussi les bonnes manières à table et les repas. Comment dresser une table,
étiquette concernant les chaises, les serviettes, ordre des
plats. Un repas sera servi et les étudiants apprendront à
gérer des situations différentes et difficiles à table.
À dix-huit heures, il y
aura une courte cérémonie au cours de laquelle Jim Mitchell, secrétaire
honoraire du conseil, acceptera officiellement ces
dons. Harvey Slack suivra avec son propre apport
au sujet de notre histoire et expliquera la raison
pour laquelle ils ont décidé de faire passer ces ouvrages des étagères leur propre bibliothèque à celles du Club.

“ ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE: THE WORLD AT
WAR 1939-1945 ”
Par l’auteur Sir Max Hastings
Considéré comme l’un des meilleurs historiens de
la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Max Hastings approche ce récit de façon novatrice, par en dessous, à
partir de récits de témoins oculaires. Le fait de
mettre l’accent sur l’expérience humaine, particulièrement puisqu’elle varie entre les campagnes et
les continents, rapproche l’événement du lecteur
du point de vue émotionnel.
Le général Thomas J. Lawson CMM,
CD a obtenu un diplôme de génie électrique en 1979 au Collège militaire
royal du Canada (CMRC). En 1985, il a
terminé une maîtrise en génie électrique au CMRC, puis a enseigné au Collège. Le général Lawson a occupé divers postes d’état-major au sein de l’Aviation royale avant
d’intégrer l’équipe Transformation des FC en 2005 au sein
de laquelle il a dirigé la constitution de l’État-major interarmées stratégique. En mai 2007, il a été nommé Commandant du Collège militaire royal du Canada à Kingston.
En 2009, le général Lawson a été promu major-général et
nommé Chef d’état-major adjoint de la Force aérienne. En
juillet 2011, il a obtenu le rang de lieutenant-général et a
été déployé à la Peterson Air Force Base au Colorado, où il
a assumé le poste de Commandant adjoint de l’organisation du Commandement de la défense aérospatiale de l’Amérique du Nord. Le général Lawson a été promu à son
rang actuel et a été officiellement nommé Chef d’étatmajor de la Défense le 29 octobre 2012.
Lors du déjeuner-causerie du 11 avril, le général Lawson
expliquera comment le monde doit composer avec un
domaine de la sécurité en constante évolution qui influence sa situation économique. Il parlera en outre du
rôle essentiel joué par les Forces canadiennes dans les
opérations nationales et mondiales, y compris la collaboration avec d’autres organismes gouvernementaux au
Canada pour maintenir l’intégrité de la souveraineté sur
l’Arctique et des missions canadiennes internationales.

Le 23 janvier 2013, le comité des événements spéciaux a eu le plaisir de

judiciaire et juridique étaient présen-
Barry Strayer a parlé de son livre, qui
revêt en partie la forme de mémoires,
couvrant ses études en tant que boursier Rhodes et bachelier en droit civil
à Oxford et doctorant à Harvard avec
spécialisation en droit constitutionnel
qui l’ont conduit aux postes de sousministre adjoint et conseiller juridique de ministres de la Justice (MM.
Trudeau et Chrétien) et des Premiers
Ministres Pearson et Trudeau concernant le rapatriement de la Constitution et la Charte des droits et libertés.
Ses remarques comportaient des souvenirs tant personnels que professionnels de réunions ministérielles au niveau fédéral et fédéral-provincial, y
compris un récit fascinant des événements liés à la « nuit des longs cou-
teaux ». Ses connaissances et son expérience ont fait de lui l’homme parfait pour réaliser un apport considérable et mémorable à l’histoire constitutionnelle canadienne.
Tous les exemplaires du livre laissés
au bureau ont été vendus. Ceux qui
n’avaient pas acheté leur copie à leur
arrivée ont dû attendre un envoi supplémentaire. Il s’agit d’une lecture
« incontournable » pour toute personne s’intéressant à la genèse de
l’un des documents les plus fondamentaux pour la gouvernance fédérale et provinciale canadienne et
pour les droits et libertés depuis
l’Acte de l’Amérique du Nord britannique de 1867.
La séance s’est terminée avec les gracieux remerciements de notre historien du Club, Randolph Gherson, qui
assumait également le rôle d’animateur de cet événement et qui a remis à
notre invité spécial un modeste témoignage de notre reconnaissance pour
cet exposé et important ajout à la liste
des conférenciers des déjeunerscauserie du Rideau Club (2013).
Soirée jazz de Seventeen
Voyces – une nuit mémorable
Le samedi 27 avril
La représentation de All That Jazz par Seventeen
Voyces fera éclore un été précoce au Rideau Club.
De retour à la demande de tous, le chaud répertoire
du talentueux chœur de chambre inclut le sensuel
«Summertime» de George Gershwin et l’évocateur
«Georgia on My Mind» de Hoagy Carmichael.
Sous la direction de son fondateur, Kevin Reeves, le
programme du chœur inclut des morceaux tels que
«Jada Jazz», «Skylark», «Ain’t Misbehavin» et «Blue
Moon» de Rodgers et Hart. Parce que le jazz trouve
ses origines dans la musique spirituelle et populaire
du 19e siècle, le chœur polyvalent chantera également
le spiritual «Shenandoah».
Un pianiste de jazz exceptionnel accompagnera le
chœur pour un grand nombre des morceaux. Peter
Brown est considéré comme l’un des meilleurs interprètes de jazz et de blues au clavier à Ottawa. Il joue
du piano, du synthétiseur et de l’orgue. Son style va
des blues Chicago à la musique country en passant
par le bebop. À noter au cours de sa carrière : il s’est
produit en première partie de B.B. King, a accompagné le guitariste de blues texan Sherman Robertson
ainsi que la légende du blues de Chicago A. C. Reed. I
La soirée concert inclut un délicieux repas à trois services accompagné de vin et un verre de vin lors de la
réception d’avant le dîner. Comme le dit l’un des
membres du Rideau Club, Seventeen Voyces offre « le
meilleur du divertissement ».
