the presence of several obstacles
along the route (where it is crossed by

an underground solution was the only
option.”

Section B of line 1(a) of the Lille Metro
was built as part of the project to extend
the line towards Roubaix and Tourcoing.
It comprises a 1.4 km tunnel with a station, an equipment shaft and two intermediate shafts.
SETEC TPI’s remit:
Since the end of 1989 Setec TPI personnel
have been providing CUDL (the Lille Urban
Community) with ongoing on-site support to
extend lines 1 (a) and 2.
On this particular section, SETEC TPI has
provided project management support:
•
in drawing up the detailed preliminary
study and subcontractor bidding document.
•
in monitoring the working designs.
•
in monitoring the working designs.
The tunnel, of external diameter 7.72m,
was bored beneath the water table with
the aid of a pressurised slurry tunnelling
machine with a ground coverage of 10
to 20 m.
The tunnel crosses chalk, upper and
lower sandy chalk layers and Louvil
clay seams.
The lining comprises 0.34m thick prefabricated reinforced concrete rings
joined with metal bolts.

The underground works beneath the water table and in a dense
urban environment, led to the use of the same
pressurised slurry tunnelling machine that was
used at Lille and Toulouse.
